Willie L. Wymer, 68, died Monday, March 14, 2005, at her home in Marion.
She was born in Smyth County to the late Randolph and Sallie McCloud Gullion.
She was a member of the Church of God Prophecy for many years. Survivors include her husband, O. Gene Wymer of Marion; four daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Diaz and Alesia and Jay Hutton, all of Marion, Brenda and Don Maines of North Carolina and Lora and Paul Cappello of Connecticut; beloved dog, Josie; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Patsy Tuggle of Saltville, Lillie and Wiley Brown of East Haddam, Conn., and Ann Cote of Deep River, Conn.; eight grandchildren, Phillip Reedy, Crystal and Eliu Sierra, Ariel Diaz, Jodi Hutton, Nakoma Hutton, Ashley Cappello and Aaron Cappello; two great-grandchildren, MyKayla and Dylan; special sons, Thurston Rose of Groseclose, Henry Thomas of Marion and Roberto Diaz of Miami, Fla.; and many cousin, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 17, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel in Marion with the Rev. Paul Horton officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.

Barbara Bowman Debord, (Bobbie Lee), 31, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center from injuries received in an automobile accident.
She was born in Smyth County and was preceded in death by her grandmother, Annie Bowman and her grandfather, Herbert Kelly Johnson.
She was a graduate of Chilhowie High School, class of 1991 and attended Wytheville Community College.
She was a member of the Seven Mile Ford Christian Church and was currently employed at Oak Hill Cap and Gown Co. in Chilhowie.
Survivors include one daughter, Alexius Ciera Miller of Chilhowie; one son, Mark Miller III of Chilhowie; parents, Roger and Christine Bowman of Marion; grandmother, Edna Johnson of Marion; grandfather, John Bowman of Chilhowie; one sister and brother-in-law, Kelley Bowman and Gary Moore of Marion; nieces and nephews, Cory and Katlinn Hale, Logan, Justin, Cody and Kariana Moore; and special friend, Aaron Lowe.
Funeral services were held Friday evening, March 11, 2005, at the Bradley's Funeral Chapel in Chilhowie. The Rev. Jerry Williams officiated the ceremony. Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 12, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Middle Fork Cemetery.

Mamie A. Lester, 92, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Brady Lester; her parents, James Garfield and Cora Hart; two brothers, Wells R. Hart and Worth Hart; and sister, Clyde Adams.
She was a member of McCready Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and T.G. Gillespie of Saltville; grandson, Tommy Gillespie, Jr. of Saltville; several nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law, Lucille Waugaman of Salem and Evelyn Hart of Bristol.
Graveside services were conducted Thursday morning, March 10, 2005, in Mount Rose Cemetery. The Rev. John Roe officiated the ceremony.
The family received friends Wednesday evening, March 9, 2005, at the funeral home.

Pennington
Harley Ray Pennington, 67, of Troutdale, died Sunday, March 6, 2005, in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
He was a lifelong resident of Smyth County and was the son of the late Harley and Mildred Walls Pennington. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by an infant son, Kenneth Ray Pennington.
He retired in 2000 from the U.S. Forestry Service after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Azen Baptist Church in Konnarock.
Survivors include his wife, Betty L. Pennington; two sons and daughters-in-law, Anthony and Margaret Pennington of Marion and Kevin and Jeanie Pennington of Troutdale; two daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie and Gerald Widener of Marion and Teresa and Ronald Parsons of Troutdale; one brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Katie Pennington of Damascus; one sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Eugene Fauber of Spotswood; six grandchildren, one great-grandson, two step-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a special friend, the Rev. Tim Blevins; and a pet dog, Scamper.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon, March 9, 2005, in the Azen Baptist Church in Konnarock. The Revs. Tim Blevins, Jimmy Lundy, Jr. and Jerry Fritz officiated the ceremony. The committal service and interment followed at Azen Cemetery.

Widener
Elwanda Virginia "Wanda" Widener, 67, of Damascus, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tenn.
She was born in Chester County, Pa., and was the daughter of the late Vance and Lockie Pennington Barlow. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Dean Widener and a sister, Clara Alice Pennington.
She had lived in Pocahontas for many years prior to moving to Washington County in 1991. She was of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca Ann and Bobby Moore of Glade Spring; two granddaughters, Taylor Brooke Moore and Lauryn Nichole Moore, both of Glade Spring; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Lillian Wyatt of Chilhowie, Polly and Willis Gilley of Marion and Betty Wylene and Bobby Coe of Sugar Grove; one brother and sister-in-law, Marvin and Renee Barlow of Bristol, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Friday evening, March 11, 2005, in the Garrett Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Gary Ritchie and the Rev. Warren Wilson officiated the ceremony. The committal service and interment will be at 12 noon, Saturday, March 12, 2005, at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus.

Buster Brown Barlow, 64, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, in the Smyth County Community Hospital. He was born in Washington County to the late Lord Emory and Nettie Mae Thomas Barlow and was preceded in death by his sister, Carrie Owens and a brother, John Barlow. He had worked as a dairy farmer and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Nancy Barlow; his children, Sarah and Lacy Rogers and Roy and Carla Barlow, all of Damascus and Lora and Walter Barron, Jr. of Marion; three brothers, Eliuh Barlow and Eugene Barlow, both of Glade Spring and Ernest Barlow of Norfolk; four sisters, Minnie Faye Widner of Chilhowie, Dorothy Widner, Margie Thomas and Edna Thomas, all of Glade Spring; nine grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. At his request, there will be no public funeral services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in memory of Mr. Barlow to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Joe Meek Myers, 64, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. Born in Marion, he was the son of the late Melvin "Buck" and Ruby Heffinger Myers and was preceded in death by two brothers, Willis "Bill" Myers and James B. "Corkey" Myers; and one sister, Charmie Myers Patrick McManamay. Survivors include his wife, Theresa Farmer Myers; four sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Kristie Myers and Jeff and Ellen Myers, all of Marion, Tony and Patty Myers of Windermere, Fla., and T.J. and Mary Ann Dillon of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; one step-daughter, Sharron Dillon of Vernon, Conn.; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Lil and Herb Eller of Chilhowie, Evelyn and Joe Porterfield and Phyllis and Dave Paugh, all of Baltimore, Md., Anna Mae and Everette Hunt of Saltville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Melvin and Wilma Myers and Howard and Charlie Myers, all of Marion; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. Samuel C. "Dude" Phibbs Sr., 66, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, in Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. He was a retired employee of Bethlehem Steele in Sparrows Point, Md., and a U.S. Air Force veteran. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Samuel C. Jr. and Connie T. Phibbs of Tannersville; five brothers, Jim Phibbs and Milton Phibbs, both of Glade Spring, Marvin Phibbs of Clarksville, Tenn., Lacy Phibbs of Newport News and Herbert Phibbs of Yorktown; one sister, Vienna Meek of Marion; and two grandchildren, Brandon Phibbs and Steven Phibbs. Velma Texas Campbell Phillips, died Thursday, March 3, 2005, in Richfield Nursing Home in Salem. She was born in Washington County to the late Gifford Franklin Campbell and Kansas Susan Smith Campbell. She was preceded in death by a brother, Peyton Hoover Campbell. Survivors include one son, Marlyn "Holmes" Campbell of Salem; one brother, G.R. Campbell of Saltville; one sister, Meda Laws of Saltville; a grandson, Glenn Campbell of Salem; two great-grandchildren, Katelin Campbell and Kyle Campbell, both of Salem; and several nieces and nephews. Minnie Helton Boardwine, 85, of the Corn Valley community, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, in the Russell County Medical Center. Born Sept. 25, 1919, in Russell County, she was the daughter of the late John Wesley Helton and Bertha McCracken Helton. She was a former employee of the Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon for many years. She attended Hyters Gap Community Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her twin brother, Lawrence Helton; a son, Gerald Boardwine; an infant sister; and several half brothers and sisters. Survivors include her loving husband of 56 years, Paul Boardwine; a daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Randall Combs of Lebanon; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Kathy Boardwine of Atkins and David and Zelma Boardwine of Abingdon; a nephew that she raised as a son, Jessee Helton and wife, Karen, of Abingdon; brother and sister-in-law, Fitzhugh and Betty Helton of Meadowview; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and many friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2005, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Randy Key and the Rev. Jim Odum officiating. Maggie Viola Woods Eller, 71, widow of Charlie Calvin Eller, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, in Smyth County Community Hospital. Survivors include four daughters and three sons-in-law, Katherine and Gary Cullop of Sugar Grove, Connie Blevins of Chilhowie, Nancy and Randy Blevins of Marion and Betty and Mike Armstrong of Rich Valley; two sons and daughters-in-law, Phillip Dean and Michelle Eller and Charles Robert "Bobby" and Debbie Eller, all of Marion; one brother and sister-in-law, Claude and Okie Woods of Sugar Grove; several special relatives by marriage, Sarah, Alberta, Mary Alice, and Fern Eller, Rena Blevins, Mae Poole, Enis Vattilano, Eva Kunkle, Roy and Neal Eller, James Blevins, Johnny Vattilano and Eddie Kunkle; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Garrettson
Eldridge Randolph Garretson, 78, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at Memorial Health and University Medical Center in Savannah, Ga. Born in Smyth County on Dec. 21, 1926, he was the son of Guy Garnett Garretson and Clara Mae Leedy Garretson. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Geraldine Garretson Hall and Mildred Garretson Condon of Marion, as well as a brother, Guy G. Garretson, Jr. He was a graduate of Marion High School, Gettysburg College and served in the U.S. Air Force in World War II. In 1951 he married Carole MacKay in the first wedding in the, then new, present day Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Marion. The wedding was presided over by Dr. Eldridge Copenhaver for whom he was named, Dr. John Fray, President of Marion College and J. Luther Mauney, church pastor. He was affiliated with several fiberglass firms throughout his engineering career. He was instrumental in designing and producing the first fiberglass boat as well as the Chevrolet Corvette, among other accomplishments. He had been retired for several years. Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Ginger G. and Charles Powell of Greenville, N. C., Jayne G. Holland of Savannah, Ga., Ellen G. and John Meeks of Richmond Hill, Ga., Alex G. and Al Hodges of Hatteras, N. C.; a son, Scot Randolph Garretson of Pantego, N. C.; nephews also survive, Gerald Lee Hall of Marion, Dr. William Garretson of Foley, Ala.; a niece, Mittie-Clare McDonald of Round Rock, Texas; and 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Ebenezer Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2005, with the Rev. James Bangle and Dr. Martin Saarinnen officiating. Burial of the cremains will follow in Round Hill Cemetery in Marion. The family suggested that memorial gifts be directed to the charity of one's choice. John Henry Griffey, 86, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at the Francis Marion Manor nursing home. He was born in Smyth County to the late Henry and Ruth Tuggle Griffey. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby Katherine Griffey; four brothers; four sisters; and a stepson, Harvey Griffey. Survivors include his wife, Minnie Griffey; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Henry A. Griffey and Earl and Brenda Griffey, all of Marion; three daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy and Steven "Tony" Bunch, Betty Nash, and Barbara and Robert "Buzz" Russell, all of Marion; two brothers, Jay Griffey of Bel Air, Md. and James Griffey of Pennsylvania; step-daughter, Polly McKinnon of North Carolina; two step sons, Pat Griffey and Guye Edda of Tannersville and Thomas "Peanut" Griffey and wife, Sue of Chilhowie; one step daughter-in-law, Sharon Griffey of North Carolina; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and six step-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
