Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Hayden
Betty Joan Kell Hayden, age 50, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000 in a Roanoke Nursing Home.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, James Allen Kell and Levada Kell.
Survivors include three sons, James Allen Smith Sr., Chilhowie, Kenneth Eugene Smith Sr., and Kevin Thompson, both of Marion; two sisters, Patricia Sayers, Wytheville, and JoAnn Wise, King, N.C.; one brother, Robert Allen "Bobby" Kell Sr., Marion; five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 29, at 2 p.m. in Barnett’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Neitch and the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Burial followed in Round Hill Cemetery.
Barnett’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Snead
Betty June Helton Snead, age 60, of Saltville, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mrs. Snead was the daughter of the late Bruce and Mozelle Helton, and a member of Deliverance Pentecostal Church of God.
Surviving are her husband, John Oliver Snead; one son, Danny Snead of Saltville; two daughters, Amy Gardner of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Leanna Holmes of Rural Retreat; five sisters, Edna Delp, Hattie Goff and Nannie Frye, all of Saltville, Peggy Morgan of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Elizabeth Minton of Asheville, N.C.; nine grandsons; several nieces and nephews; sons-in-law, Jakic Holmes and Doug Gardner.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Feb. 29, at 11 a.m. in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tracy Puckett officiating. Entombment was in Mount Rose Mausoleum in Glade Spring.
D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville was in charge of arrangements.

Verlander
Kathleen Anderson Verlander, age 81, died Feb. 27, 2000 in Houston, Texas.
Mrs. Verlander was a former resident of Marion where her three sons were born and raised.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Lewis and Jimmie Verlander, Jim and June Verlander, and Joe and Judy Verlander; six grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Sherwood Anderson, Otho Anderson and Arthur Anderson; one sister, Dorothy McDaniels; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 29, at 2 p.m. in Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Lipps officiating. Interment was in Woodlawn Garden of Memories. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation be made to the March of Dimes Gulf Coast Chapter, 3000 Wesleyan, Houston, Texas 77027.

Blackwell
Mrs. Louise Maloyed Blackwell, age 77, of Tannersville, died Thursday, March 2, 2000 at her daughter's home in Tannersville.
She was the widow of Howard E. Blackwell, Sr.
Survivors include one son, Howard E. Blackwell, Jr., Tannersville; one daughter, Sharon Osborne, Tannersville; two brothers, Ralph Maloyed, Hillsville, and Wade Maloyed, Tannersville; four sisters, Nannie Mae VanDyke, Roanoke, Phyllis Hancock, Marion, Gladys Poe, Richlands, Va., and Mary Zane Ashley, Tannersville; two grandsons, Shane Osborne and Johnny Blackwell; one special granddaughter, Jacquelynn Davis; and one special friend, Carrie Clear.
Funeral services for Mrs. Louise Maloyed Blackwell will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 4, 2000, at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville with Rev. Wiley Neal and Rev. William F. Dean officiating. Burial will follow at the Ellis Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tannersville Rescue Squad.

Colley
James Charles Colley, age 89, of Clinchburg, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
He was born in Washington County, a son of the late Maggie P. and William J. Colley. He attended the Primitive Baptist Church. Mr. Colley retired from Olin Mathieson Chemical Corp. in Saltville. He was a veteran of World War II, and he was a member of the Saltville Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of the Clinchburg, Virginia Senior Citizens.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Edith Faye Colley; one sister, Lois Jean Tolbert; three brothers, Joseph Colley, Abingdon, Wiley B. Colley, Marion, Edward A. Colley, Suwanee, Ga.; three sisters-in-law, several nieces and nephews, and many friends also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Colley will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 4, 2000, at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home, in Saltville, with Elders Curt Heath, Ben Blevins, and Eddie Lyle officiating. Burial will follow at the Mount Rose Cemetery.

Hyman
Thomas L. (Tom) Hyman Jr., age 29, of Saltville, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000 at the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Hyman was a senior at Virginia Tech and a Resident Advisor for Virginia Tech. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and was preceded in death by his father, Thomas L. Hyman Sr.
Survivors include his mother, Katie Lester Hyman, Saltville; two sisters, Tina H. Cook, Saltville, and Eleanor S. Desai, Oak Hill; two brothers-in-law, Duane Cook and Amit Desai; three nieces and one nephew; two special friends, Scott Everhart and Jennifer Overbay.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 2, at 2 p.m. at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with burial in the Mount Rose Cemetery.

Kelly
Brenda Ray Kelly, age 47, of Glade Spring, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at the Johnston City Medical Center.
She was a graduate of Richlands High School and was a member of Joy Baptist Church in Chilhowie. She was preceded in death by her father, Chester V. Ray.
Survivors include her husband, James P. Kelly, Glade Spring; two sons, James P. Kelly, II, and Christopher Ray Kelly, both of the home; her mother, Effie Cordle Ray, Cedar Bluff; one sister, Paula Ray Castle, Cedar Bluff; a niece, Kelli Danielle Castle.
Services to celebrate her life will be held Saturday, March 4, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Joy Baptist Church in Chilhowie with the Rev. Neil Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring.

Murphy
Marie T. Murphy, age 73, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Murphy was a faithful member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Marion and was a retired employee of Smyth County Community Hospital following 33 years of service.
Mrs. Murphy was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Murphy.
Surviving are her husband, Hugh F. Murphy Sr., Marion; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Tracy Untiedt, and Patty and Phil Hendren, all of Marion; five sons and four daughters-in-law, Billy and Terry Murphy, Dublin, Joey and Lisa Murphy, Marion, Jack and Cindy Murphy, Radford, Robert and Janet Murphy, Rural Retreat, and Hugh F. Murphy Jr., Galax; one sister, Joan Herman of Jim Thorpe, Penn.; one brother, Joseph Bosha of Bethlehem, Penn.; 11 grandchildren.
A Mass of Resurrection was held Friday, March 3, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church with Father Robert Krenik and the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Entombment followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Wells
Virginia Wilkins Wells, formerly of Rural Retreat, died Friday, February 25, 2000, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. She had resided at the Randolph House, Pulaski, for the past two years.
Born in Pine Bluff, Ark., to Virginius Davis Wilkins and Mary Allen Wilkins, cotton plantation owners, Virginia took great pride in tracing her ancestry to explorer Thomas Walker and Adlai E. Stevenson, a United States vice president.
Virginia was educated in Arkansas schools and studied voice at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She married Hubert Laurence Rawlins and was the mother of one son, Hubert, Jr., who excelled at Virginia Military Institute before transferring to Rice University where he obtained BS and MS engineering degrees. Following graduation, "Hubie" was employed by Shell Oil Co. and was accidentally killed in a work-related explosion shortly thereafter, at the age of 24.
After her marriage dissolved, Virginia traveled extensively with her mother and lived in Texas, Florida, North Carolina and Washington, D.C., where she worked in the Surgeon General's office. While in D.C., Virginia married Ralph J. Wells, a Grayson County native. They moved to Greeley, CO, where Ralph worked as a pipefitter, and Virginia was an antique dealer.
Upon retirement, the Wells moved to Rural Retreat and endeared themselves to the community. Virginia was a Red Cross volunteer, an avid bridge player, Rural Retreat Garden Club president, and hostess extraordinaire.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; her parents; her beloved son "Hubie"; and her sister, Jessie.
Survivors include a nephew, Virginius W. Haymes of North Carolina; a niece, Jessie "Pat" Williams of OH; several great-nieces and nephews; and her many Rural Retreat and Randolph House friends.
A memorial service of thanksgiving for the life of Virginia W. Wells will be held at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel, Rural Retreat, on Tuesday, March 7, at 7 p.m. with Pastor Edward Schaack officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Burial will be in Old Bellwood, Pine Bluff, Ark., at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the McDowell Music Club scholarship fund, the Grace Lutheran Church organ fund, or the American Red Cross, in care of Lindsey Funeral Home.

Barker
Velma Phipps Barker, age 66, died Friday, March 3, 2000 at her home in Sugar Grove.
Mrs. Barker was a native of Flat Ridge, but had lived in Sugar Grove most of her life. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harve Phipps and Pauline Young Phipps, and her stepmother, Maude Phipps.
Survivors include her husband, Vernon E. "June" Barker, Sugar Grove; five sons and daughters-in-law, Norman and Terry Barker of Spotsylvania, Eddie and Jill Barker of Ceres, Don and Tammy Barker of Rural Retreat, Doug and Debbie Barker of Springfield, and Joe and Corinne Barker of the U.S. Navy in Jacksonville, Fla.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Jerry Jones of Elon College, N.C., Susie and John Poole of Bristol, and Betsy and Arch Shearin of Flat Ridge; one sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Bill Hodge of Independence; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Ben and Juanita Phipps of Flat Ridge, and Harold "Pete" Phipps of Chilhowie; five grandsons; seven granddaughters; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 6, at 2 p.m. in the Sugar Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenny Price officiating. Burial followed in Burtons Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery in Flat Ridge. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sugar Grove Rescue Squad, c/o Carol Choate, P.O. Box 257, Sugar Grove, VA 24375.

Brosius
Henry Copenhaver Brosius, age 78, of Maitland, Fla., died Thursday, March 2, 2000 in Florida Hospital, Orlando, Fla.
Mr. Brosius was born in Marion and moved to central Florida in 1968. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Maitland. He was a retired Major in the United States Air Force and served as a pilot during World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
He is survived by his wife, Ann W. Brosius of Maitland, Fla.; two daughters, Beverly Brosius of Maitland, Fla., and Lynn Brosius-van Gorp of Fort Myers, Fla.; one sister, Mary Helen Nihart of McLean.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 6, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Maitland, Fla., with the Rev. Richard Meyer officiating. Burial followed in Glen Haven Memorial Park with military honors.

Bryant
Robert Eugene "Bob" Bryant, age 86, of Glade Spring, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Bryant was born in Johnson County, Tenn., the son of the late Thomas Guy and Mollie Bryant. He had lived most of his life in Washington County and was a member of Glade Community First Church of God.
Surviving are his wife, Myrtle Heath Bryant; six sons, John Richard Bryant and M.A. Bryant, both of Chilhowie, Herbert Bryant of Damascus, Carl Bryant of Abingdon, Dale Bryant of Bristol, and Max Bryant of Bristol, Tenn.; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a special friend, Gray Dishman Kulin.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 2, at 8 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gene Little officiating. Graveside services were held Friday, March 3, at 11 a.m. in Old Glade Presbyterian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Glade Community First Church of God, 12223 Maple St., Glade Spring, VA 24340.
