Tate
Helen Holmes Tate, age 87, of Dublin, died Monday, March 20, 2000 in the Pulaski Community Hospital.
Mrs. Tate was born in Smyth County on Oct. 3, 1912, the daughter of the late Robert W. Holmes and Garian Copenhaver Holmes. She was a graduate of Marion Junior College which is now part of Roanoke College. She was a retired medical secretary at St. Albans Hospital in Radford.
Mrs. Tate was a member of the Dublin Presbyterian Church and was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Edward B. Holmes.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Rev. Dr. Manson B. Tate of Dublin; one daughter, Carolyn Elizabeth (Betsy) Tate of Dublin; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert (Bob) Carrington Tate and Rebecca Luffman Tate of Lithonia, Ga.; three grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Tate, Mary Charlotte Tate and James Andrew Tate, all of Lithonia, Ga.; one sister, Mrs. Denton Hull of Marion; one brother and sister-in-law, Charles W. and Dorothy Holmes of Marion; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday, March 23, at 3 p.m. at Dublin Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Susan Cyre and the Rev. John K. Boyd officiating. Graveside services were held Friday, March 24, at 11 a.m. at Mount Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family wishes that memorials be made to the Pulaski Daily Bread, P.O. Williams
Charles F. "Chuck" Williams Jr., age 70, died Monday, March 20, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Williams was a member of the Ebenezer Lutheran Church. He was retired from the United States Marine Corps and was a member of the Francis Marion VFW Post #4667 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 39.
Mr. Williams was the co-owner of Williams Lawn Service Inc., and Williams Garden Center. He served several terms on the Executive Board of the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia. He was a past director of Hemlock Haven Episcopal Church Camp, formerly a superintendent of Holston Hills Country Club, and was active in the Boy Scouts of Marion.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann Williams, Marion; one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Steve Griffith of Greenville, S.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Denise Williams of Marion, and Jeff and Leanne Williams of Appomattox; one sister, Dorothy Smith of Lakeland, Fla.; two brothers, Don Williams of Tampa, Fla., and Jack Williams of Evington; three grandchildren, Zacharia Williams of Appomattox, Emily Williams and Olivia Williams, both of Marion.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 24, at 11 a.m. at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church with Pastor James H. Bangle officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery where full military rites were conducted by Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ebenezer Lutheran Youth, P.O. Worley
Ruth Burgess Worley, age 78, of Saltville, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mrs. Worley was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Garland Worley; two sons, Robert K. Worley and Kenneth D. Worley; and a grandson, Dale Worley.
Survivors include two sons, Eddie Worley and Mike Worley, both of Saltville; three daughters, Patsy Nieto, Saltville, Brenda Simpkins, Tallahassee, Fla., and Betty Jean Frye, Seven Mile Ford; seven sisters, Opal Rhea, Jackie Chapman, both of Saltville, Helen Lawrence, Crescent City, Fla., Jean Griffith and Myrtle Worley, both of Aldie, Marie Porter, Sterling, Ill., and Dorothy Puskar, Port Orange, Fla.; two brothers, Bobby Burgess, Wytheville, and Burkley Burgess, Port Orange, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, March 24, at 2 p.m. at the Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Blevins and the Rev. Donald Wyatt officiating. Burial followed at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Martin
Harley Eugene Martin, age 72, of Covington, died Sunday, March 26, 2000 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salem.
Mr. Martin was born at Big Stick, Raleigh County, W.Va., on Nov. 8, 1927, the son of the late Charles Wilson and Pearl Eller Martin. He was retired from production with General Motors Corporation in Detroit, Mich., and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He is survived by three sisters, Wilma J. Whetsel and Edith Ring, both of Gaffney, S.C., and Marie Sutyak, Beaver, W.Va.
Graveside services will be conducted Friday, March 31, at 11 a.m. in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Chilhowie with the Rev. Charles E. Blevins officiating. Friends may call up to 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 30, at Nicely Funeral Home in Clifton Forge.

Hazel Higgins Patton, age 83, died Saturday, March 25, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Patton was a charter member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Sugar Grove and was preceded in death by her husband, Bascome Patton.
Survivors include two sisters, Henrietta Willis of Hampton, and Helen Cline of Marion; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 28, at 11 a.m. in Barnett’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Baker officiating. Burial followed in Slemp Cemetery.

Surber
Benjamin Franklin Surber, age 81, died Friday, March 24, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Surviving are two brothers, Wesley R. Surber of Abingdon, and Ted Surber of Chilhowie.

Boyd
Nadyne McCready Boyd, widow of Samuel H. Boyd, died Wednesday, March 29, 2000 in Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Boyd was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marion. She was a wonderful mother and aunt and was loved by all.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Ann Boyd and Sterling Wilson of Longwood, Fla.; two grandchildren, Valerie Wilson Liber and Janet Wilson Bautch; nieces and nephews, Charles Keith Snider, Madelon S. Crockett, Evelyn S. Berry, Patricia M. Groff, and George H. McCready.
Graveside services will be held today, April 1, at 2:30 p.m. at Round Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Buddy Miller officiating. Lillard McGrady, age 68, of Independence, died Wednesday, March 29, 2000 at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax.
Mr. McGrady was born March 26, 1932 at Rugby to Claude McGrady and Wanda Thompson McGrady.
Surviving are one sister and brother-in-law, Helen and J.R. Maines, Sparta, N.C.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Roger and Beverly McGrady, Marion, Raymond and Marcella McGrady, Adwolfe, and Grover and Betty McGrady, Independence; one special niece, Sandra Anderson, Adwolfe; several other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted today, April 1, at 11 a.m. in Corinth Baptist Church in Rugby with the Rev. Rex Hall and the Rev. Warner Eller officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church just in time for the service. Carson Wayne Pennington, age 51, died Thursday, March 30, 2000 in Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax.
He is survived by four sisters, Diana Kirk of Summerville, Patricia Harris, Chilhowie, Susan Pennington and Sherry Poston, both of Marion; two brothers, Gary Pennington of Lenoir, N.C., and Richard L. Campbell, Manassas.

Rosie Bridgeman Sexton, age 97, died Wednesday, March 29, 2000 in Francis Marion Manor.
Survivors include two sons, Walter James Bridgeman and Charles Bridgeman, both of Marion; one brother, Morgan Stroupe of Dublin; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Weaver
Faye Church Weaver, age 88, of Whitetop, died Thursday, March 30, 2000 in Grace Health Care Center in Abingdon.
Mrs. Weaver was born in Wilkes County, N.C., a daughter of the late Finley and Anna Church, and was the widow of Harry R. Weaver.
She was a retired cook at Mount Rogers School in Grayson County with 16 years of service, a member of Faith Lutheran Church and a 25-year member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter in Abingdon.
Surviving are one daughter, Louise Farmer of Abingdon; one son, Bud Weaver of Whitetop; two sisters, Mae O’Neal and Helen Floyd, both of Barnesville, Ga.; three grandchildren; six nephews; five nieces.
Graveside services will be conducted today, April 1, at 2:30 p.m. in Weaver Family Cemetery with Pastor Wil Robertson and the Rev. W.S. Mayo officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Faith Lutheran Church, c/o Jimmy Reedy, treasurer, P.O. Box 48, Whitetop, VA 24292.

Bobby G. Burton Sr., age 60, died Sunday, April 2, 2000 in Valley Health Care Center.
Mr. Burton was born in Portagville, Mo., to Inez Burton and the late Lloyd Burton. He lived in Missouri and Michigan for most of his life before moving to Marion. He was employed by General Motors for several years and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
In addition to his father, Mr. Burton was also preceded in death by one brother, Wayne Burton, and one sister, Dorothy Burton.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Burton; two daughters and one son-in-law, Amy and Greg Harris, Marion, and Mary Fields, Meadowview; one son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Tonja Burton, Heidelburg, Germany; one stepdaughter, Melissa Kincer and husband Johnny, Cripple Creek; his mother, Inez Pearl Burton, Plainwell, Mich.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and John Glasstetter, Grand Blanc, Mich., Sharon and Jerry Fredenburg, Plainwell, Mich., and Patsy Pearce, Elizabethton, Tenn.; one brother, Ron Burton, Grand Blanc, Mich.; five grandchildren, Timothy Jones, Jeremiah Harris, Angus Harris, Aspen Burton, Stephen Wayne Burton; three step-grandchildren, Tanner Kincer, Lathishya Burton, Kevin Burton; special friend, Ronald Haga; several nieces and nephews.

Military graveside services will be held today, April 5, at 1 p.m. in the Mountain Home Veterans National Cemetery in Johnson City, Tenn.

Jessie Clifford "J.C." Craven, age 70, of Chilhowie, died Saturday, April 1, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Craven was the widower of Eunice Margaret Rich Craven and was a member and deacon of Grosses Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Mike Chatham, Chilhowie; two grandchildren, Jessica Dawn and Logan David Chatham; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 4, at 11 a.m. in Grosses Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Lloyd L. Sheets officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
