Cornett
Texas Grubb Cornett, age 97, formerly of Elk Creek and Independence, died Friday, April 21, 2000 at Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Cornett was born Sept. 21, 1902 at Grant, the daughter of Franklin Grubb and Laulett "Sue" Victoria Kegley Grubb. She was the widow of Paul Cornett.
Surviving are a special nephew and spouse, Joe and Dixie Hart, Mouth of Wilson; several other nieces and nephews; special caregivers, Minnie Tuggle, Louise Harris, Louise Anderson and JoAnn Blevins; special friend, JoAnn Matney.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 24, at 2 p.m. in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Lorton officiating. Interment followed in Salem Cemetery in Independence. Hammer
David Marshall Hammer, age 76, died Saturday, April 22, 2000 at Clemmons Village Assisted Living in Clemmons, N.C.
Mr. Hammer was born in Chicago, Ill. He was a resident of Rockingham County since 1971. He was a retired field engineer with Western Electric, was a member of Hampton Heights Baptist Church of Eden, N.C., and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Tweten Hammer, of the residence; one daughter, Doreen H. Mabe of Pfafftown, N.C.; three sons, Donald G. Hammer of Marion, Davidson E. Hammer of Greensboro, N.C., and Duane R. Hammer of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one brother, Eugene Hammer of Savannah, Ga.; nine grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 24, at 2 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel in Madison, N.C., with burial in the Hammer Family Cemetery in Stoneville, N.C.

Heath
Agnes Virginia Heath, age 76, widow of Elmer B. Heath, died Thursday, April 20, 2000 in the Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tenn.
Mrs. Heath was a member of the East End Baptist Church, the Joyful Noise Choir, the Smyth County Home Extension Club and AARP. She was retired from Harwood Manufacturing with over 30 years of service.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Sherman Lawson, Clarksville, Tenn., and Helen and Glen Vernon, Marion; one sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and Stanley Hedrick, Roanoke; one brother, Robert Jones, Chilhowie; seven grandchildren, Cindy Brown, Tammy McElroy, Sherman Lawson Jr., Karen Vernon-Young, Kevin Vernon, Keith Vernon, and Kelly Vernon; 12 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Delmar and Virginia Heath, Anna James and Carson Anderson, Elizabeth Heath, Pearl Heath, Cecil and Olga Heath, Ernest and Dixie Heath, Hazel and Porter Heath, Dorothy Sullivan, and Frances Jones; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, April 23, at 3 p.m. at Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul Jones officiating. Interment followed in Grosses Creek Cemetery. Flowers are appreciated or memorial donations can be made to the East End Baptist Church, Groseclose St., Marion, VA 24354.

Lamie
Nannie Belle Lamie, age 92, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Surviving are one sister, Hallie Smith, Wytheville; one niece; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted Saturday, April 22, at Ridgedale Cemetery.

Murray
Hazel Marie Call Murray of Roanoke died Thursday, April 20, 2000.
Mrs. Murray attended Preston Oaks Baptist Church and was retired from Elizabeth Arden.
She was the widow of Daniel W. Murray and the daughter of the late Bradley N. Call and Bessie Chapman Call. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Carra Call Hutton, Estelene Call Sanson, and a brother, Cecil R. Call.
Surviving are her children, Mavis Murray Dempsey of Sugar Grove, David Wesley Murray, Hugh Foster Murray, Dwayne Howard Murray, Judy Marie Murray, Charles Richard Murray, all of Roanoke; William Bradley Murray of Dudley, N.C., Barbara Murray Becker and Linda Murray Atkinson of Vinton; one sister, June Call Simmons of Conway, Ark.; four brothers, Gordon Call, J.B. Call, both of Rock Falls, Ill., Charles Call of Pensacola, Fla., and Robert Call of Bristol, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 24, at 1 p.m. at Oakey’s North Chapel with the Rev. Kelly Dampeer officiating. Interment followed in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Neel
Stewart Gaby Neel, age 83, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000 at Overlake Hospital in Limestone, Tenn.
Mr. Neel was born Oct. 11, 1916 in Limestone, Tenn., the son of James B. Neel and Gladys Gaby Neel. He formerly lived in the Bethel Community near Abingdon with an aunt, Garnett Bonner.
He graduated from King College in Bristol, Tenn., in 1941 with an A.B. in business. He served four and a half years in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a captain and a pilot. He flew extensively throughout the United States, in the Pacific Theatre, in Africa and to India.
After the war, Mr. Neel began teaching school in Marion and soon after became director of the Chamber of Commerce in Marion. Subsequently, he followed this career to Williamson, W.Va., and then Uniontown, Penn. He organized and directed the Fayette County Development Council in Pennsylvania. He moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1957 and until his retirement in 1982 was employed by Puget Sound Power and Light Company in industrial and community development.
Mr. Neel was active in the Presbyterian church serving as an Elder in four different churches.
Surviving are his wife, Maxine Elizabeth Harris; two sons, Thomas Neel, Belmont, Mass., and Michael Neel, Springfield, Ill.; three daughters, Patricia Ann Neel, Everett, Wash., Betty Kay Neel, Bellevue, Wash., and Susan Neel, Arcata, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson.
A memorial service was held April 15 at 11 a.m. in Bellevue First Presbyterian Church in Bellevue, Wash.

Edith Pierce, age 88, of Troutdale, died Saturday, April 22, 2000 in Francis Marion Manor.
Mrs. Pierce was the widow of Guy Pierce.
Surviving are two sons, Robert Pierce of Troutdale and Roy McGrady of Maryland; two sisters, Rose Holden and Kathleen Clayton, both of Maryland; one brother, Jack McGrady of Maryland; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, April 24, at 2 p.m. in Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial was in Anderson Hill Cemetery in Troutdale.

Campbell
Randolph Noah Campbell Sr., of Chilhowie, died Monday, April 24, 2000 in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Campbell was a member of the Charles Wesley United Methodist Church in Abingdon and a member and treasurer of the Charles Wesley United Methodist Men.
Surviving are his wife, Frances Chappell Campbell; two sons, Randolph N. Campbell Jr., Wytheville, and James Edward (Eddy) Campbell, Cheltenham, Md.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two nieces.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 28, at 1 p.m. in Charles Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. William Weldon and the Rev. Richard D. Mullan officiating. Burial was in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Elizabeth Evon Wright Fisher, age 58, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000 at her home in Crockett.
Mrs. Fisher was a daughter of the late Dewey and Ossie Burris Wright of Cripple Creek. She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter and a brother, Pierce Wright.
Survivors include her husband, Frank M. Fisher of Crockett; one son, Bryan Fisher of Crockett; one daughter and son-in-law, Christa and Christopher Tickle; twin grandchildren, Pierson and Elora Tickle, all of Charlotte, N.C.; seven sisters, Helen Frye, Cripple Creek, Rosetta Parker, Mt. Airy, N.C., Wanda June Blankenship, Ridgeway, Pauline "Paula" Moore, Wytheville, Iris Moore, Draper, Carol Thompson, Tobaccoville, N.C., Rita Morrison, Pilot Mountain, N.C.; one brother, Beauford Wright, Pulaski; several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Garnett
Retired Circuit Court Judge Henry D. Garnett, age 85, died April 25, 2000.
Judge Garnett was born in Fredericksburg on April 11, 1915, the youngest child of Mary Merchant and Henry Garnett.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II having served in the Mediterranean and Pacific Theatres including the Battle of Okinawa and later served in the Occupation Forces in Korea. Following his discharge as Captain, he returned to law school where he graduated in 1946. He served as the Commonwealth’s Attorney for the County and City of Warwick and for the consolidated City of Newport News from 1952 until 1962 when he was elected by the Virginia General Assembly as Judge of the Fortieth Circuit. Judge Garnett retired in 1981 but continued to serve for many years as a Substitute Circuit Judge throughout the Commonwealth. He retired to Fluvanna County in 1983 and recently moved to the Town of Louisa.
Judge Garnett was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Newport News and at the time of his death was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Cismont where he had served as a Vestryman.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert S. Garnett of Marion; and three sisters, Louise Goodwin of Fredericksburg, Irene Farster of Hampton, and Evelyn Johnston of St. Petersburg, Fla.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Frances Williams, formerly of Richmond; three sons, H. Duncan Garnett Jr. and wife Diana McCoy Garnett of Hampton, R. Jefferson Garnett and wife Cochran Cowart Garnett of Louisa and Lloyd Moss (Doc) Garnett and wife Barbara Suttle Garnett of Orange; seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, April 29, at 11 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church in Cismont with graveside service following on the grounds. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution be made to the Volunteer Rescue Squads of Kents Store, Lake Monticello or Louisa.

M.R. "Doc" Hancock, age 74, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000 at his home in Marion.
Mr. Hancock was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy. He was owner of Holston Chrysler-Plymouth Inc., and a member of the First United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Loma Lee Hancock; his parents, Royal and Beulah Hancock; three brothers, James Hancock, Talford Hancock, Averette Hancock; and a sister, Josephine Powers.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Chuck Redepenning of Concord, Mass.; three sisters, Alene Sumner of Pulaski, Fay Saunders of Draper, and Sonia Easter of Hillsville; four brothers, Thomas Hancock of Draper, Wayne Hancock and John Hancock, both of Hillsville, and Russell Hancock of Martinsville; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Redepenning and Charles Redepenning III.

Muncy Robert Havens, age 74, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000 at his home in Atkins.
Mr. Havens was born in Bland County, the son of the late Joe and Ruth Rose Havens. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Margie Stowers Havens, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Alice Havens and Mike and Betty Havens, all of Atkins; five grandchildren, Joseph Havens of Chilhowie, William Havens, Andrew Havens, Kim Havens, and Ashley Havens, all of Atkins; one great-grandson, Shawn Havens, Marion; two sisters, Beatrice H. Parks, Sugar Grove, and Della Mae Stowers, Wytheville; one brother, Floyd E. Havens, Marion; several nieces and nephews.

Mildred Jane Walls Pennington, age 80, of Damascus, died Thursday, April 27, 2000 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mrs. Pennington was born in Smyth County, the daughter of the late Coy and Mae Dolinger Walls. She was a member of Azen Baptist Church in Konnarock and was the widow of Harley Pennington.
Surviving are a daughter, Janet Fauber of Spotswood; two sons, Roger Pennington of Damascus and Harley Ray Pennington of Konnarock; three sisters, Irene Wright of Konnarock, Alice Welch of Gaithersburg, Md., and Wiltha Brooks of Marion; four brothers, Galen Walls, Herman Walls and Ambers Walls, all of Konnarock, and Lloyd Walls of West Grove, Penn.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Jacob Elwood Powers, age 82, of Chilhowie, died Thursday, April 27, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Powers was born in Washington County and was the son of the late Jacob and Bessie Baldwin Powers. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Trula Mae Powers.
Surviving are his wife, Zelma Mae Heath Powers; one daughter, Mrs. Charles H. Alene F. Reedy, age 71, of Chilhowie, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Willard Reedy of Chilhowie; one daughter, Vicki Reedy Beattie, Chilhowie; one son, Steve Reedy, Glade Spring; three grandchildren, Gwen Beattie, Kaytee Beattie and Jason Reedy.

Testerman
Don Edward Testerman, age 72, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000 at his home in Street, Md.
Mr. Testerman was born in Grant on Feb. 1, 1928, a son of the late Neal M. and Cloie (Stone) Testerman. He was a longtime resident of Harford County and worked as a self-employed carpenter, retiring in 1993. He was preceded in death by a son, Gary F. Testerman on Oct. 4, 1995.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Betty C. Greer Testerman; two sons and daughters-in-law, Eddie A. and Shirley Testerman of Street, Md., and Don E. Jr. and Theresa Testerman of Pylesville, Md.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Katherine and Dan Ross, and Anna Mae and Harry Crumrine, all of Street, Md.; four brothers and one sister-in-law, Joseph and Mabel Testerman of Forest Hill, Md., Kookie Testerman, Street, Md., James Testerman and Ramon Testerman, both of Troutdale; four grandchildren, Dawn and husband Steve McCole of Abingdon, Jason and wife Carol Testerman, Stephanie Testerman and Brad Testerman, all of Pylesville, Md.
