Stamper
James Walter Stamper, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, at the Francis Marion Manor after a long battle with Alzheimer's. He was born June 16, 1915 in Smyth County to Harvey Emerson Stamper and Hattie Mae Powers. He was the oldest of 11 children. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He married Nannie Lucille Campbell on May 11, 1946. At the age of 70 in 1985, he retired from Brunswick Corp in Marion. He was a life member of the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667 and the American Legion Post 18. Three children, Edgar Lee, Avery Dale and Bonnie Lou; a granddaughter, Jessica Mae Stamper; sisters, Ruth Callahan and Madeline Blevins; and brothers, Paul, Robert, Coy, Earl, and Roy Stamper preceded him in death Survivors include his wife, Lucille, a resident of Francis Manor; daughter, Ruby Powers; her children, Drema Ellis Griffin, David Taylor, Diane Powers, and Stephen Powers; and her grandchildren; Jeremy and David Taylor; and Stephanie Ellis Poston; daughter and son-in-law, Sadie and "Jim" Brad Greer; their children, Laura and Lynn VanHoozier, Tammie Greer-Parks, Tonja Greer, James Bruce and Carrie Greer and their grandchildren; James Robert Owens, Randy Greer, Trevor VanHoozier, Sarah Greer, Colby Corvin; step-grandchildren, Casey and Bradley VanHoozier, Colton Hamm and Cheryl Irwin Kalapp; daughter and son-in-law, Wilma and Ron Irwin; children, April Frost Joiner; children, Jimmy, Joey, and Chelsey Joiner and Jackie Frost, all of Florida; son, Don Ray; son, Millard Stamper; children, Tonya Stamper and two sons, James Carter and Jared Douglas Shelton, and David Shelton, Sharon and Michael Stamper; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Ola Stamper Coffey of Tampa Fla. and Ruby Stamper and Zeke Callahan of Roanoke; one brother and sister-in-law, Marvin and Irene Stamper of Chilhowie; and two aunts, Rose Lambert and Grace Overbay. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at 8 p.m. at the Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel in Marion with the Rev. Joe Powers and the Rev. Dennis Eller officiating. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 3, 2005, at Grosses Creek Cemetery with military honors being rendered by the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. Surber
Ralph E. "Tinker" Surber, 37, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a member of Lincoln Hill Baptist Church in Marion. Survivors include his parents, Pastor Ralph and Mary Surber of Chilhowie; one daughter, Tiffany Nicole Surber; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael and Beverly Surber of Saltville and David Allen and Trixy Surber of Chilhowie; one sister and brother-in-law, Nancy Christina Mae and Guy Stone of Chilhowie; two nephews, Jay Greer and Matthew Stone; and two nieces, Brianne Greer and "Punkin" Stone. Funeral services were conducted Monday morning, Feb. 28, 2005, at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Otis Barker officiated the ceremony. Interment followed in Mount Rose Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that love gifts be made toward the funeral expenses. The family received friends at the funeral home Sunday evening, Feb.27, 2005. D.R. Wygal
Ella Virginia Mason Wygal, 83, died Sunday Feb. 27, 2005, at the Smyth County Community Hospital. She was born in Smyth County to the late Charles Alexander and Mary Blankenbeckler Mason and was preceded in death by her husband, William Jennings Wygal, Sr. and a brother, Walter Mason. She was a member of the Marion Baptist Church and the Sunday school teacher of the Sherrill Memorial class. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, William Jennings, Jr. and Martha Susan Wygal of Wytheville; one daughter, Mary Susan Wygal of Marion; two sisters and one brother-in-law, June M. and Harold Conner of Marion and Mildred Ballard of Stark, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Eleanor McDonald of Marion and Nora Mae Wygal of Dublin; five grandchildren, Charles, Cassandra, Ashton, Sarah and Julia; several nieces and nephews; a very special friend, Linda C. Gross of Marion; and her special dog, Lady. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning, March 1, 2005, at the Marion Baptist Church. Dr. Mark Ross and the Rev. Eugene Copenhaver officiated the ceremony. Interment followed in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Flowers were appreciated or memorial donations may be made to the Marion Baptist Church, 1258 N. Ciccarello
Julia A. Ciccarello, 102, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, in the Smyth County Community Hospital. She was born in the Little Valley Community of Tannersville on Jan. 29, 1903, to the late Joseph Jake and Margaret Asbury Taylor. Her husband, Jimmy Ciccarello and two sons, Eddie Taylor and Carlos Junior Ferley preceded her in death. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ashford of Maryland; 10 grandchildren, LuAnn Cooper, Daisy Lee Ashford, Ronnie Ashford, Carlos Ferley, Hubert Ferley, Dora Frye, Kathleen Langford, Junior Taylor, Wallace Taylor and Margaret Ann Stroup; 25 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, from the Little Valley Christian Church with the Rev. Bob Hartley officiating. Diggs
Margaret Diggs, 94, of Saltville, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, in Valley Health Care in Chilhowie. She was born in Damascus, the daughter of the late Henry E. and Belle W. Diggs. The family moved to Saltville in 1925. After graduation from Saltville High School, she studied secretarial science at Bristol Commercial College. While in Bristol she played piano for the choir of Addilynn Methodist Church in its broadcasts from radio station WOPI. She returned to Saltville as secretary in the gypsum division of Mathieson Alkali Works at North Holston. She later moved to the Saltville Plant of Mathieson where she served more than 35 years as secretary to Ray B. Worthy, a vice president of the company and manager of the Saltville operation, and succeeding plant managers Leonard Bradt, Robert Aebersold, and George F. Comer. She was an active member of Madam Russell United Methodist Church, serving many years as pianist for the junior choir at Sunday evening worship. She was a counselor for the Methodist Youth Fellowship and also taught a youth Sunday school class for several years. Survivors include a brother, Henry E. Diggs, Jr., of Arden, N.C.; and a niece and several nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, in Glenwood Cemetery in Bristol, Tenn., with the Rev. Janet Richardson officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Madam Russell United Methodist Church in Saltville, or to Addilynn Memorial United Methodist Church in Bristol, Tenn. D. R. Martin
Ernest Wade "Butch" Martin, Jr., 51, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2005. He was a 1972 graduate of Chilhowie High School and a 1976 graduate of Emory and Henry College. His father, Ernest Wade Martin, Sr. and a brother, William Robert Martin, preceded him in death. Survivors include his son, Sam Martin of Galax; his mother, Mickey Martin; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Charlie Keen and Tammy and Shawn Davie, all of Chilhowie; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Martin of Roanoke; several nieces and nephews; and two very special friends, Ronnie Blevins and Earl Martin. Graveside services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at the Mountain View Cemetery with the Rev. John H. Graham officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chilhowie Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 5012, Chilhowie, Va. 24319 or to the Mountain View United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1722, Chilhowie, Va. 24319. Rubye Lee Martin, 90, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie. She was born in Smyth County to the late Washington Jacob Lee Shupe and Mary Inez Blevins Shupe. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Martin; three brothers, Ernest Shupe, David Shupe and Frank Shupe; and one sister, Dorothy Hicks. She was a member of the Grosses Creek Baptist Church for many years. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bill and Janie Martin and Charles Everette Martin, all of Chilhowie; five daughters and sons-in-law, Beulah and George Martin, Louise Martin and Shirley Owens, all of Chilhowie, Jeanette and Willard Hamill of Roanoke, and Joan and Paul St. John of Beckley, W.Va.; one brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Francis Shupe of Chilhowie; two sisters, Edith Blankenbeckler of Chilhowie and Evelyn Myers of Clifton Forge; two sisters-in-law, Maxine Shupe and Mary Sheets, both of Chilhowie; 11 grandchildren, Trish, Laura, Becky, Julie, Anna, Althea, John D., Leigh Ellen, Sarah, John H. and Bill; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at 2 p.m. at the Grosses Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Darrell Lambert and the Rev. Lloyd Sheets officiating. Edith Virginia Viers Adams, 82, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Bronda Lee Holmes Elliott.
She was a member of the First Church of God in Allison Gap and she was a retired beautician.
Survivors include one son, Garold Dean Holmes of Collins, Ohio; one daughter, Alvajean Holmes Donnelly of Emory; one sister, Thelma Taladay of Glade Spring; one son-in-law, James Oliver Elliott of Beavercreek, Ohio; two special cousins, Jack C. Harris of Washington, D.C. and Eleanor Robbins of Clinchburg; six grandsons, Wray Elliott, Jeffrey Elliott, Vincent Holmes, Jerry Holmes, Justin Holmes and Joshua Holmes; four granddaughters, Cindy Simpson, Dottie Holmes, Rachelle Holmes and Tracy Holmes; several great-grandchildren; Viers family nephews, Todd Viers, Jr. and Junior Henderson; Viers family nieces, Janie Zell Asbury, Leslie Jane Henderson, Koleda Mae Ferguson and Darla Kay Wynegar; Holmes family nephews ,James and Ray Holmes; and Holmes family nieces, Lee Etta DeWitt, Barbara Layne Taylor, Ella Mae Harris and Mary Sue Gillespie.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday evening, Feb. 22, 2005, at The First Church of God in Allison Gap with the Rev. David Mumpower and the Rev. Derrel Souvine officiating. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at 10 a.m. in Mount Rose Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, Feb. 22, 2005, just prior to the funeral service.

Billings
Glen R. Billings, 78, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was a member of Valley View Baptist Church and was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U. S. Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War having served in the U. S. Army. He was also a lifetime member of the Francis Marion VFW Post # 4667.
Survivors include his wife, Mary F. Billings of Marion; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Joyce and Rick Hanshew of Marion, Catherine and Mike Livesay of Salem; three sons and three daughters-in-law, Callie Joe and Grace Billings, Glen Scott and Crystal Billings, all of Marion and Bane L. and Denise Billings of Rural Retreat; one brother and sister-in-law, Bane Edward and Vange Billings of Marion; five grandchildren, Tiffany Steele, Brett Hanshew, Katie and Joey Billings, and Tyler Livesay, and two expected grandchildren, Willow and Wyatt Billings; his beloved dog “Tiny”; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.

Mary Katherine Fields, 40, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was born in Flint, Mich., May 12, 1964, and was employed with Sprint PCS as a customer service representative.
Her father, Bobby Gene Burton, Sr., and grandparents, Charlie and Elsie Eller and Lloyd Burton preceded her in death.
She was a member of the Abundant Life Christian Center in Marion.
Survivors include one son, Timothy Michael Jones of Abingdon; her mother, Charley May Eller of Marion; one brother and sister-in-law, Bobby, Jr. and Shavalla Burton of Athens, Texas; one sister and brother-in-law, Amy and Greg Harris of Marion; special nephews, Jeremiah and Angus Harris; and other family members including aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, from the Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel in Marion with the Rev. Todd Rigney officiating. Graveside services will be held at 11a.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at Roselawn Cemetery.

Havens
Marie G. Thomas Havens, 78, of New Castle, Del., died Monday, Feb. 21, 2005.
She was born on Aug. 11, 1926 in Smyth County, daughter of the late William Thomas and Virginia Anderson Thomas.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, William “Dink” Thomas.
She moved from Sugar Grove to Delaware in 1964 and worked for 17 years at the former Medical Center of Delaware before retiring as an assistant manager in the textile services department.
A devout Christian, she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. In her leisure time, she greatly enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her loving and devoted husband of 61 years, Joe Havens; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joe C. and Louise Havens and Bill and Donna Havens; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Dick Kelly and Joyce and Gary Hutton; two brothers, Cecil and Jim Thomas; three sisters, Margie Bullins, Kate Obranovic and Lillian Short; and 12 grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home in New Castle, Del. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DePont Parkway, New Castle, Del.

Opal Irene Forrester Horne, 92, of the Blue Springs community of Rural Retreat died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, in Francis Marion Manor.
She was born in Washington County, a daughter of the late Jacob and Alice Greer Forrester.
She was a life long member of the Taylor’s Valley Church of Christ, but in recent years had faithfully attended the Blue Springs United Methodist Church on the Cedar Springs Charge.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David J. Horne; a daughter, Helen Anne Corns; a granddaughter, Cecelia Corns, both of Martinsville.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Keith Denney of the Blue Springs community of Rural Retreat; a son-in-law, Howard Corns of Martinsville; a grandson and his spouse, David and Sandra Corns of Martinsville; three granddaughters and their spouses, Kristie and Mark Myers of Marion, Suzanne and Dennis Scott, and Debbie and Mike Wilkerson, all of Rural Retreat; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Mae Hushour.
The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the American Cancer Society.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at 11 a.m. at the Blue Springs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Cindy Baxter officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Howell
Adelee Epperson Howell, 79, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, at her daughter’s home in Chilhowie.
Born Feb. 5, 1926, to the late Calvin and Etta Hopkins Blevins, she was preceded in death by her first husband, June Epperson, and her second husband, Roy W. Howell. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, the Rev. Barney Blevins and Roland Blevins; and three sisters, Louise Lovern, Lillian Martin, and Gladys Odum.
She was a long time member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
She worked at Baldwin’s for over 20 years and later was known as the “Pillow Lady” participating in many area craft shows.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Frank Cregger of Chilhowie; two sisters-in-law, Daisy Blevins of Spindale, N. C., and Ruth Epperson of Glennville, Ga.; one brother-in-law, Harold Epperson of Marion; three grandchildren, Karen and Robert Holland of Christiansburg, Julie and Garron Smith of Arab, Ala. and Tina Pruitt of Marion; six great-grandchildren, Megan Cregger, Keenan Harry, Logan LeFew, Preston LeFew, Alex Pruitt, and Addie Holland; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Lloyd Sheets officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service.

He was preceded in death by his father, Oscar Gilmer Mitchell, Sr.; paternal grandparents, Wyndom and Margie Mitchell; and maternal grandparents, Robert and Mamie Hayden.
Survivors include his mother, Sadie Hayden Mitchell; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Wayne and Barbara Mitchell, Jerry and Delores Mitchell, Junie and Lucille Mitchell and Wesley and Melissa Mitchell, all of Saltville; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Bill Wyatt of Stuart, Retha and Mike Moore, Ellen Mitchell, Lisa Mitchell, and Amy and William Hart, all of Saltville; special friend, John Griffey; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 22, 2005, at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel.
The Rev. Gene Holley oficiated. Burial followed in the Elizabeth Cemetery.
The family received friends Monday evening, Feb. 21, 2005, at the funeral home.
