Robinette
Ethel Marie Robinette, age 85, widow of Glen (Ping) Robinette Sr., died Thursday, Jan. 23, 1997 at Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home in Marion.
She is survived by two daughters, Shelba R. Crigger of Rural Retreat, and Betty R. Brantley of Houston, Texas; one son, Curtis Robinette of Rural Retreat; two sisters, Verda Voltz of Fawn Grove, Penn., and Avis Bainbridge of Joppa, Md.; three grandchildren, Tony Pickett of Knoxville, Tenn., Amy Robinette and Mary Pat Robinette, both of Rural Retreat.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Groseclose.
Seaver-Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Sheffield
Viola Surber Sheffield, age 72, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She is survived by her husband, Frank Sheffield of Marion; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Don Musser of Marion; two sons and daughters-in-law, Eddie and Joyce Sheffield of Marion, and Frank and Karen Sheffield of Herndon; one sister, Annabelle Surber of Damascus; one brother, Clayburn Surber of Damascus; three grandchildren, Dwayne Sheffield, Sara Lyn Musser, Dana Hounsell and husband Mike; two great-grandchildren, Eric and Justin Sheffield.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 27, at 11 a.m. at Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church in Atkins with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Burial followed in Mount Rose Cemetery, Glade Spring.
Seaver-Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Smith
Genevieve J. "Gen" Smith, age 74, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 1997 at her home in Saltville.
She was a member of Madam Russell United Methodist Church and was the widow of Newell S. Smith.
Survivors include one son, Jackie N. Smith, Hardy; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Smith, Hardy; a special friend, Mrs. Holmes (Hilda) Coulthard, Saltville.
Graveside services were conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, in Mount Rose Cemetery with the Rev Scott A. Robertson-Gouge officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saltville Rescue Squad.

Snider
Mae Haga Snider, age 92, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, James Herman Haga Sr., and her second husband, Conley Snider. She was a member of the Marion Baptist Church and was the daughter of W.C. and Callie Barnett Hockett.
Survivors include two sons, James Herman Haga Jr., Jacksonville, N.C., and Monroe Lee Haga, Marion; four daughters: Jewel Blevins, Mrs. Clifton (Charmie) Blevins, Mrs. Bascom W. (Margaret) Johnson and Mrs. Larry (Doris) Winebarger, all of Marion; two daughters-in-law, Marie Haga and Mattie Haga; two stepsons, Clifton Snider, Fern Park, Fla., and Arlen B. Snider, Marion; one stepdaughter, Wilma Sherwood, Bristol; one sister-in-law, Isabell Hockett, Marion; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, in Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles E. Blevins, the Rev. Floyd Nelson and Dr. William A. Slater officiating. Burial was in the West Cemetery.

Broyles
A. Kent Broyles, age 92, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 1997 in Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie. He retired from Automotive Service & Supply Company and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Ella Miller Broyles of Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Dwane and Sarah Broyles of Spartanburg, S.C.; one sister, Pauline Oliver of Bristol, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Cynthia Powell and Dottie Broyles, both of Spartanburg, S.C., and Caroline Broyles of Columbia, S.C.
Funeral services will be held today, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. J.N. Howard officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 1 to 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, 115 S. Church St., Marion, VA 24354.

Burnop
Carl C. Burnop, age 81, died Monday, Feb. 3, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Faye Warren Burnop of Marion; one daughter and son-in-law, Juanita and William Jones of Kiawah Island, S.C.; two sisters, Helen Harris of Marion, and Elva Greer of Rock Falls, Ill.; one brother, Lee Burnop of Marion; two grandchildren, Chad H. Groseclose and Jason G. Groseclose, both of Charleston, S.C.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Weston B. Guthrie officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Collins
Rebecca Jane Eller Collins, age 82, died Monday, Feb. 3, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was the widow of John Wesley Collins Jr.
Mrs. Collins was a member of the Cleghorn Valley Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Katherine Owens and Renie Haga, both of Chilhowie; one son, George W. Collins, Chilhowie; five sisters, Mary Manuel, Damascus, Bertha Lee Whitaker and Pearl Jovall, both of Pennsylvania, Nokie Lampkins, Goochland, and Edith Price, Elkton, Md.; three brothers, R.C. Eller, Bristol, Tenn., Glen Eller, Maryland, and Ernest Eller, Abingdon; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 5, in the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Blevins officiating. Burial will be in the Sulphur Spring Cemetery.

Gillenwater
Dorothy "Dot" Henderson Gillenwater, age 79, of Saltville, died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997 in Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie. She was the widow of Roby P. Gillenwater.
She was a member of the Saltville Baptist Church, and a member of the Saltville Chapter No. 151 Order of the Eastern Star.
She was a funeral director as well as one of the owners and operators at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home. She was also a past secretary of the Southwest Funeral Directors Association for many years and held a membership with the National Funeral Directors Association and the National Selected Morticians.
Survivors include one daughter, Whitley Gillenwater Cardwell, Saltville; two granddaughters, Rachel and Sarah Cardwell; one sister, Mrs. Mark (Sally Irene) Farris, Abingdon; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dan Jividen and the Rev. Benny Frye officiating. Burial was in Elizabeth Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Saltville Rescue Squad.

Pratt
Nina Kate Pratt entered into eternal life on Feb. 1, 1997 at the Wythe County Community Hospital in Wytheville. She was the last surviving child of Nellie and James Thomas Buchanan and was the widow of Marion Thompson Pratt of Locust Cove.
She leaves behind six grieving children, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Survivors include Marion and Gene Griffin of San Antonio, Texas; Stuart and Dreama Pratt of Rural Retreat; Eleanor and Dick Wassum of Independence; Linda and John DiYorio of Wytheville; Janet Pratt; and Jane and Charlie Clark of Rich Valley.
Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. They include Dr. Mac Griffin, Tippy Matherley, James, Tim, Todd and Steven Pratt, Chris and Ashley DiYorio, Champ, Will and Ben Clark. Great-grandchildren are Chace Griffin, Gabriel DiYorio, and Jamie Matherley.
A service celebrating her life was held Monday, Feb. 3, at 11 a.m. at the Locust Cove Presbyterian Church where she was a charter member. The Rev. Rich Cardo and the Rev. Luther Watson officiated. Burial was in the Ridgedale Cemetery.

Sweat
Helen Elaine (Heath) Sweat, age 63, died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997 at her home in Gaithersburg, Md. She was the widow of Charles Alexander Sweat. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Elaine Sweat.
She was a native of Clinchburg and a member of the Clarksburg Baptist Church. She retired from the Montgomery County Public School System after years of service in administration and was employed as a Montgomery County Police Officer.
She was a graduate of North Valley High School and attended James Madison University .
Survivors include one son, John W. Sweat, Gaithersburg, Md.; one daughter, Anna (Sweat) Dempster, Brunswick, Md.; three sisters, Victoria Cuddy, Kingsport, Tenn., Evelyn Cardwell and Lois Chapman, both of Saltville; three brothers, W.T. Heath, Bristol, J.C. Heath, Saltville, and Leon Heath, Marion; four grandchildren: Hugh Thomas Dempster and Delaine Elizabeth Dempster, both of Brunswick, Md., and Jemma Elaine Sweat and John Joseph Sweat, both of Burtonsville, Md.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 5, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with burial in the Johnson Family Cemetery.

Thomas
Hurthel Angelo Thomas, age 93, of Rich Valley, died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was a member of Goodman's Chapel and was a self-employed farmer for many years. He was preceded in death by two children, Dewey Thomas and Ituria Davidson.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Buchanan Thomas; three granddaughters, Linda Eller, Betty Sue Griffey and Carolyn Pauley; several nieces and nephews; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Kincheloe officiating. Burial was in Ridgedale Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Saltville Rescue Squad Blackhills Substation.

Barnitz
Charles Barnitz Jr., age 90, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 1997 in the Birdmont Health Care Center. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Florence Mildred Warthen Barnitz.
Mr. Barnitz was born Sept. 4, 1906 in Wytheville, the son of Charles Henry Barnitz and Frances Lawrence Pendleton Barnitz. He attended Wytheville public schools; the private school of the Misses Shortt in Wytheville; the Millersburg Military Institute in Millersburg, Ky.; and Virginia Military Institute in Lexington.
He first worked on highway construction with Pendleton Construction Co., Inc. Later he was employed by the City of Wytheville as Town Clerk and Commissioner of the Revenue. In 1941, after the Radford Ordnance Works plant was opened for the production of powder for use in World War II, he went to work for the Hercules Powder Plant. He retired from there in 1971.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and had served on the vestry. He was a member of the Wytheville Volunteer Fire Department and was a charter member of the Wythe County Rescue Squad Inc. He was a member and past master of the Wytheville Masonic Lodge No. 82 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, and past district deputy of District 42. He was past high priest of the Wythe Chapter of Royal Arch Masons No. 51.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte Barnitz and Charles "Chuck" Hoelzel of Elizabeth City, N.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, John Alexander and Kelley Barnitz of Magdelena, N.M., and William Stewart "Bill" Barnitz of Tucson, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. at the St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Peter Ouzts officiating. Interment followed in the East End Cemetery. Wytheville Masonic Lodge No. 82 A.F. & A.M. conducted a memorial service Friday, Feb. 7. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Wythe County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 389, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Cox
Rev. Leonard R. Cox, age 87, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was born May 22, 1909 in Smyth County, the son of the late Charles and Pearl Cox.
"Buster" was raised in Marion, attending school at the "Old Red Barn." In his early twenties, he moved to Gary, W.Va., to work in the coal mines.
In 1938, Elder Cox was baptized "In Jesus' Name" by Booker T. Jones of Gary, W.Va. While sick in January of 1939, he received the Holy Ghost. He was ordained as an Elder in the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World and preached in various churches in West Virginia.
Other outstanding accomplishments in Elder Cox's life are in 1942, he was ordained as an Elder in the Emmanuel Tabernacle Church of the Apostolic Faith in Columbus, Ohio; in 1952, he was married on July 5 to Ruby Christopher in Marion and moved to Arlington where he pastored churches in northern Virginia and Washington D.C. for 15 years; in 1966, he was ordained in the Independent American Pentecostal Church in Washington D.C.; in 1968, he returned with his wife and children to Marion to take care of his father; in 1969, he began preaching at the First Baptist Church in Marion after the death of Rev. Campbell and remained the pastor at the First Baptist Church for 17 years; and also during this time, Elder Cox had a weekly, half-hour Sunday ministerial radio program on WMEV, WOLD, WCCR and Saltville.
Dr. Cox is survived by his wife, Ruby Christopher Cox of Marion; six children: Robert Floyd Cox of Largo, Md., Charles William Cox of Ontario, Canada, Esther Jawan Cox Chambers of Sanford, N.C., Deborah LaJean Cox Valazquez of Charlotte, N.C., Maria Robinette Cox of Silver Spring, Md., Leonard Christopher Cox of Marion; one brother, Ulysses Lawrence Cox of Marion; 21 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 13, at 11 a.m. at the Antioch Baptist Church with District Elder Lester Turner Sr., Dr. William Weldon, Rev. Ed Long, Rev. Carl Tinsley, Elder Edward Ramsey, Bishop Samuel Boysau and Minister Nolan Wolfe officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery in Marion. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Seaver-Brown Funeral Chapel.
