Friend
Alice Maude Cook Friend, age 92, of Max Meadows, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 1997.
She was born Jan. 23, 1905 to William Stuart and Mary Emma Reynolds Cook. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Gaylord Moffett Friend; one daughter, Ruby Friend Dean; a daughter-in-law, Linda Stone Friend; three brothers and five sisters.
Surviving are four sons and daughters-in-law, Malcolm R. and Margaret Friend, Max Meadows, Gaylord and Billie Friend, Dallas, N.C., Edwin Friend, Roanoke, and Hugh Brown Friend, Marion; three daughters and son-in-law, Evelyn F. and Nathaniel Alexander of Kent, Ohio, Jean F. Fortune, Pulaski, and Mary F. Mabe, Wytheville; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 11, in the Grubb Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Fogus officiating. Interment followed in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery.

Hopkins
Hazel Alline Foster Hopkins, age 75, of Christiansburg, died at her home Wednesday, Feb. 5, 1997.
She is survived by her husband, James Hopkins; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Susie Foster, Thomas and Linda Foster, and Archie Foster, all of Christiansburg; two daughters and son-in-law, Shirley and Thomas Price, and Mary Ellen Graham, all of Christiansburg; a special stepdaughter and her husband, Sandra and Robert Taylor of Christiansburg; one sister, Ida Belle Richards of Christiansburg; 15 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 7, at 1 p.m. in the Richardson-Horne Chapel with Pastor Carl Ratcliffe officiating. Burial was in the Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in her name to the New River Hospice, 111 West Main St., Christiansburg, VA 24073.

Hutton
Mary Creloa Hutton, age 84, widow of J. Hugh Hutton, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Ron Hutton and Robert Hutton.
Mrs. Hutton was a member of the First Baptist Church of Damascus and later, after moving to Marion, became an active member of Marion Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons and three daughters-in-law, Jim and Phyllis Hutton of Blacksburg, Joe and Suzanne Hutton of Abingdon, and Betty Hutton of Chapel Hill, N.C.; five grandchildren: Ron Hutton of Chapel Hill, N.C., Cynthia Ferrell of Richmond, Chris Hutton of Greenville, N.C., Vicki Hutton of New Orleans, La., and Candice Hawkins of Blacksburg.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Marion Baptist Church with Dr. William A. Slater officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Marion Baptist Church, 1258 N. Main St., Marion, VA 24354.
Seaver-Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Mullins
Edward Mullins, age 70, of Tazewell, Tenn., died Thursday, Feb. 6, 1997 at the Jefferson City Health & Rehab of Jefferson City, Tenn. He was a member of Elm Springs Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Shirley Mullins Brickey, and his parents, Isaac and Causbie Mullins.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Mullins of Maryland; three daughters, Wanda Worley of Christiansburg, Brenda Dancy and Linda Bailey, both of Marion; four sons, Wayne Mullins of Chilhowie, Gene Mullins of Rocky Mt., Tommy Mullins of Saltville, and Tony Mullins of Maryland; 14 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Esther Hatfield of Tazewell, Tenn., and Mary Wolfe of Kingsport, Tenn.; one brother, Henry Stewart of Rogersville, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews
Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m. at the McNeil Funeral Home Chapel in Sneedville, Tenn., with the Rev. Steven Gibson and the Rev. William Gibson officiating. Interment was in the Gibson Cemetery.

Sturgill
Allen Wayne Sturgill, age 50, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was a native of Smyth County but had lived in Naples Fla., for more than 20 years. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Sturgill, Naples, Fla.; his parents, Clarence J. and Alice Sturgill, Chilhowie; one brother, Larry D. Sturgill, Austin, Ark.; his maternal grandmother, Lizzie Kate Blevins, Marion; two nieces, one nephew, and one great-nephew.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Francis Marion VFW Post #4667. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Trail
J.D. Trail, age 73, died Friday, Feb. 7, 1997 in the Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie.
Mr. Trail was a native of Smyth County and had served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include one daughter, Sandra Musser, Rural Retreat; five sisters, Maggie Trail, Nannie Orr, Doris Murray, Helen Falke, all of Marion, and Bessie Orr, Chilhowie; four grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, at Roselawn Cemetery with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.
Barnett's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Wooden
Katherine Brosius Wooden, formerly of Marion, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 1997 in Norfolk.
She is survived by one son, Dr. Ernest E. Wooden III and wife Judy, and two grandsons, all of Durham, N.C.; one sister, Mary Ellen Nihart, McLean; one brother, Henry C. Brosius, Maitland, Fla.; four nieces.
Funeral and burial were conducted in Norfolk on Thursday, Feb. 6.

Dillman
Sharon Ercell (Dority) Dillman, age 53, of Evans, Ga., died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 1997 in the University Hospital in Augusta, Ga.
She was born on April 2, 1943 in Marion, the daughter of Charles Howard and Rosa Geneva (Sessor) Dority.
Survivors include her husband, Bradley T. Dillman, Evans, Ga.; one daughter, Susan E. Dillman of Evans, Ga.; one brother, William H. Dority of Niceville, Fla.; two sisters, Eleanor C. Gentry of Baltimore, Md., and Roseann Rowland of Marion.
A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. George T. Yoder officiating. Entombment will follow in Augusta Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

Miller
Kelly Fred Miller, age 85, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 1997 at his home in Konnarock. He was a native of Mountain City, Tenn., and had made his home in Konnarock for the last 26 years. Mr. Miller attended college in Johnson City, Tenn., and was employed for several years at Georgetown University in Washington.
He is survived by his wife, Carrington Wyatt Miller; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles "Jody" Blevins officiating. Burial followed in Laurel Valley Cemetery in Konnarock.

Phillips
Vaughn D. Phillips, age 82, of Whitetop, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
He was a native of Madison County, N.C., but had lived in Grayson County most of his life. He was a farmer and a member of Greencove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Danford B. Phillips; one daughter, Nancy Kilby, Whitetop; three sons, Morris Phillips, Chilhowie, Steve Phillips, Mouth of Wilson, and Michael Phillips, Whitetop; three sisters, Beulah Dodds, Tampa, Fla., Eleanor Greer, Damascus, and Evelyn McClure, Abingdon; three brothers, J.B. Phillips, Alcoa, Tenn., Luther Phillips, Boca Raton, Fla., and Ernest Phillips, Chilhowie; five grandchildren, two great-grandsons; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 14, in Whitetop Baptist Church with the Rev. T.A. Pennington and the Rev. Charles E. "Jody" Blevins officiating. Burial was in Whitetop Baptist Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to the Mount Rogers Volunteer Fire Department or to the Mount Rogers Rescue Squad.

Russell
James Timothy Russell, one week old, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He is survived by his father and mother, Timothy and Sherri Norman Russell of Marion; one sister, Caitlin Leigh Russell of Marion; his maternal grandmother, Elda Norman of Saltville; paternal step-grandfather, Chuck Pauley of Saltville; maternal great-great-grandfather, Sam Benfield of Lock Haven, Penn.; paternal grandfather, James C. Russell of Umatilla, Fla.; paternal grandmother, Lynn C. Russell of Marion; paternal great-great-grandmother, Edna Reedy of Marion.
Graveside services were held Thursday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m. at Wassum Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating.
Seaver-Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Spencer
Eva Jane Spencer, age 57, of Sugar Grove, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She worked at Marion Composites for many years.
She is survived by her husband, Boyd Spencer of Sugar Grove; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Donald and Debbi Spencer, and Richard Spencer, all of Sugar Grove, and Randall and Tammy Spencer of Marion; five grandchildren including two special grandsons, Chris and Timmy Spencer of the home in Sugar Grove; four step-grandchildren; three brothers, Grover Bonham and Ralph Bonham, both of Sugar Grove, and Bob Bonham of Belair, Md.; seven sisters, Mabel Waller of Marion, Martha Robinson of Sugar Grove, Wanda Sumner of Galax, Genell Jones of Whitetop, Sharon Reedy of Volney, Margie Cox and Lucille Testerman, both of Fincastle, Del.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Feb. 15, at 11 a.m. at Brookside Baptist Church in Sugar Grove with the Rev. Donald Medley officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service. Burial will be held in Slemp Cemetery.

Taylor
Arthur Franklin Taylor, age 80, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a retired employee of the Olin Corporation. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jenny Taylor.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. James E. (Carole) Workman, Augusta, Ga., Mrs. Ronnie (Jeral) Davis, Greer, S.C., and Mrs. James R. (Linda) Hart, Nashville, Tenn.; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Stiles officiating. Burial will be in the Elizabeth Cemetery with military graveside services conducted by Saltville VFW Post No. 7328.
