Catherine Fletcher
PORTSMOUTH - Catherine Burley Fletcher, 80, of 4281 Hatton Point Lane, died Sunday morning, Dec. 27, 1998, at Lillans Loving Care Nursing Home after a decline in health.
Born Jan. 13, 1918, in Anderson, S.C., she was the daughter of James Burley and Ola McKinney Burley.
She was married
to Boyd C. Fletcher Jr., who died in 1987.
She was an office clerk at Sears Roebuck and Co. until her retirement. She was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church for more than 50 years.
Survivors include one son, Boyd C. Fletcher III of Portsmouth; one daughter, Eleanor F. Hughey of Danville; three grandchildren, Catherine Klunder of Centerville, Boyd C. Fletcher IV of Chesapeake and Stephen A. Fletcher of Portsmouth; and three-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at her daughter's residence 210 Franklin Turnpike.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. today at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Steve Carlton officiating.
Lloyd Glass
JAVA - Lloyd Glass, 77, of 324 Church Road, died Monday morning, Dec. 28, 1998, at Veteran Administration Medical Center in Salem.
Born Sept. 21, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Lonnie Glass and Bridie Petty Glass.
He was married
to Virginia M. Glass, who survives.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Prior to retirement he was employed by Dan River Inc. He was a member of Riceville Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Ernie Glass of Danville and James (J.C.) Glass of Sanford, N.C.; three daughters, Glenetta Robinson of Danville, Alease Swann of Sanford, N.C., and Delphine Terry of Goldsboro, N.C.; one brother Howard Glass of Gretna; one sister Florence Fitzgerald of Java; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Riceville Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Walker officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors conducted by VFW Post No. 4165 and DAV No. 46 of Altavista.

Louise Gregory
AXTON - Louise Aaron Gregory, 80, of 248 Breckenridge Circle, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, in The Memorial Hospital of Martinsville-Henry County.
Born Oct. 18, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Matthew C. Aaron and Grace Woodall Aaron.
She was married
to Wesley Thomas Gregory who survives.
She was a member of County Line Christian Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Betty Gregory Reynolds of Axton; five sisters, Martha Wright of Danville, Virginia Eanes, Gloria Sizemore, Leone Plybon and Barbara Kendrick, all of Martinsville; three brothers, Bill Aaron of Danville, Lindy Aaron of Chatham and M.L. Aaron of Callands; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Wesley Thomas Gregory Jr.
A graveside memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at County Line Christian Church cemetery with the Rev. J.D. Hunt III officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Fred Powell
SOUTH BOSTON - Fred Powell, 93, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at Twin Oaks Nursing Home.
Born June 28, 1905, in Halifax County, he was the son of Robert Wylie Powell and Toy Lee Ingram Powell.
He was married
to Rosalie B. Powell and later to Charlotte Marshall Powell, who survives.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of South Boston. He was a longtime South Boston town councilman and a member of Halifax Sportsman's Club. He was also former owner of the Star Warehouse.
In addition to his wife of South Boston, survivors include one daughter, Rebecca Lee Powell of South Boston; one son, Fredrick Blanton Powell of South Boston; one stepson, John David Farmer of Danville; one step-granddaughter, Elizabeth Scott Farmer of Dearfield Beach, Fla.; one sister Beulah P. Burton of Winns Creek; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Oak Ridge cemetery with the Rev. Bob Fox officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his daughter, Rebecca Powell, 502 Greenway Drive.
Dewey Rakes
Dewey Edward Rakes, 80, of 806 Kemper Road, died Monday morning, Dec. 28, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born Oct. 15, 1918, in Patrick County, he was the son of Will Rakes and Judy Nolen Rakes.
He was married
to Gertrude Spencer Rakes, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he worked as quality control inspector for Dan River Inc. before retiring. He was a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Judy Willis of Danville; two sisters, Lucy R. Booth and Mattie R. Powell, both of Danville; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by one son, Daniel W. Rakes Sr.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dana Hunt officiating. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
Curtis Reagan
Curtis Garland Reagan, 71, of 101 W. Stephens St., died Monday morning, Dec. 28, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two weeks of declining health.
Born Dec. 17, 1927, in Danville, he was the son of Louis Reagan and Marjorie Miles Reagan.
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Korean conflict. Most of his life was spent in Washington, D.C., where he was a retired administrative officer with the Veterans Administration.
Survivors include one brother, E. Jack Reagan of Houston, Texas.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with
Carolyn Winstead officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his aunt, Thelma Winstead, 1625 Piney Forest Road.

Landon Smith, Jr.
GREAT FALLS, Mont. - Landon "Smitty" Francis Smith Jr., 54, of 152 Riverview Drive, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at his residence.
Born March 15, 1944, in Axton, Va., he was the son of Thelma Smith.
He was married
in 1974 to Roberta Gunness, who survives.
He attended Brosville High School in Axton. He was master seargent in the U.S. Air Force from 1962 to 1990. He spent 26 years with the Air Force with security Police and missile control. He worked for two years at the Anaconda Mining Co. and most recently for Gagnons Reprographics in Great Falls.
In addition to his wife of Great Falls, survivors include one daughter Dawn M. Smith of Great Falls,; one son, Landon F. Smith III of Great Falls; one sister Debra Susan Merchant of Danville, Va.; three brothers, Jesse "Red" Smith of Danville, Charles Smith of Reidsville, N.C, and David Smith of Axton.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at O'Connor Funeral Home.
Margaret Traynham
Margaret Ethel Traynham, 91, of 135 Ross St., died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 16, 1907, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of John Smith and Leana Elmo Smith.
She was married
to William Traynham, who survives.
In addition to the husband, survivors include one sister Leloa Chambers of Reading, Pa.
A funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Loyal Baptist Church with the Rev. Lovelle Maxwell officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Elizabeth Blankenship
RINGGOLD - Elizabeth Wiles Blankenship, 89, of 7252 Kentuck Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, after 15 days in Danville Regional Medical Center of six months of declining health.
Born Nov. 14, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Samuel E. Wiles and Florence Mylum Wiles.
She was married
Sept. 25, 1932, to Archie Lee Blankenship who predeceased her Dec. 6, 1977.
She had spent her entire life in the Kentuck community. She was a member of Rocksprings United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley B. McCain of Danville and Pansy B. Brown of Madison, Wis.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Rocksprings United Methodist Church with the Rev. Howard C. Green officiating. Burial will be in Blankenship Family cemetery, Kentuck Road.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence of Shirley McCain, 21 Chestnut Place, Danville.
Louise Brightwell
Louise Evelyn Brightwell, 77, of 536 Keen St., died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 10, 1921, in Danville, she was the daughter of Herman T. Brightwell and Elsie Sizer Brightwell.
She had lived her entire life in the Danville area and was a member of the Keen Street Baptist Church.
She was the last surviving member of her family.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Dr. S. Felton Carter officiating. Burial will be at Shady Grove United Methodist Church cemetery.

DRY FORK - Ruby Rigney Meadows, 77, of 3657 Dry Fork Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at Riverside Health Care Center in Danville.
Born Feb. 12, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Jesse Thomas Rigney and Minnie Allen Rigney.
She was married
to Joseph Lee Meadows, who predeceased her.
Survivors include two daughters, Patsy A. Meadows and Nancy J. Meadows, both of the residence; three sisters, Bertha R. Meadows and Maggie R. Dodd, both of Chatham, and Lena R. Oakes of Danville; four brothers, Percy T. Rigney of Chatham, Ernest G. Rigney of N. Charleston, N.C., Russell W. Rigney of Axton and Edward P. Rigney of Martinsville.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Roy L. Rigney and Willard J. Rigney.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Austin Robertson and the Rev. Roger Collins officiating. Burial will be in Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.
