Elizabeth Blankenship

RINGGOLD - Elizabeth Wiles Blankenship, 89, of 7252 Kentuck Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, after six months of declining health.

Born Nov. 14, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Samuel E. Wiles and Florence Mylum Wiles.

She was married Sept. 25, 1932, to Archie Lee Blankenship, who died Dec. 6, 1977.

She had spent her entire life in the Kentuck community. She was a member of Rocksprings United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley B. McCain of Danville and Pansy B. Brown of Madison, Wis.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. today at Rocksprings United Methodist Church with the Rev. Howard C. Green officiating. Burial will be in Blankenship Family cemetery, Kentuck Road.

Louise Brightwell

Louise Evelyn Brightwell, 77, of 536 Keen St., died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after nine months of declining health.

Born Jan. 10, 1921, in Danville, she was the daughter of Herman T. Brightwell and Elsie Sizer Brightwell.

She had lived her entire life in the Danville area and was a member of the Keen Street Baptist Church.

She was the last surviving member of her family.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Dr. S. Felton Carter officiating. Burial will be at Shady Grove United Methodist Church cemetery.

Willie Gunter

Willie J. Gunter, age 39, of 415 Richmond Ave., died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998.

Gunter was born on Aug. 14, 1959, in Danville. He was the son of Mary Sue Gunter, who survives.

He was educated in Pittsylvania County at Dan River High School. He was predeceased by his brother, Michael Gunter.

Survivors include his mother of Danville; and his sister, Susie Anne Robertson of Danville.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Gospel Prayer Mission Church with Bishop John M. Burton officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday 4-8 p.m. at Beavers Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.

Brenda Kell

NATHALIE - Brenda Perkins Kell, 78, of 5201 Cole's Ferry Road, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at Berry Hill Nursing Home.

Born March 8, 1920, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Walter T. Perkins and Daisy Whitt Perkins.

She was married to Robert H. Kell. She was a member of Providence Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia K. Kendrick and Phyllis K. Norris, both of Nathalie; one son, Robert H. Kell Jr. of Nathalie; two sisters, Grace Martin of Crystal Hill and Rachel Moisoff of Richmond; three brothers, Neil Perkins, Walter T. Perkins Jr. of Wallace, N.C., and Merritt Perkins of Richmond; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Providence Presbyterian Church with burial following in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home in South Boston.

Ruby Meadows

DRY FORK - Ruby Rigney Meadows, 77, of 3657 Dry Fork Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at Riverside Health Care Center in Danville.

Born Feb. 12, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Jesse Thomas Rigney and Minnie Allen Rigney.

She was married to Joseph Lee Meadows, who predeceased her.

Survivors include two daughters, Patsy A. Meadows and Nancy J. Meadows, both of the residence; three sisters, Bertha R. Meadows and Maggie R. Dodd, both of Chatham, and Lena R. Oakes of Danville; four brothers, Percy T. Rigney of Chatham, Ernest G. Rigney of N. Charleston, N.C., Russell W. Rigney of Axton and Edward P. Rigney of Martinsville.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Roy L. Rigney and Willard J. Rigney.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Austin Robertson and the Rev. Roger Collins officiating. Burial will be in Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.

Louise Thacker

Louise Covington Thacker, 82, of 1884 Halifax Road, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 19, 1916, in Rockingham, N.C., she was a daughter of John Covington and Cora Blue Covington.

She was a member of East New Hope Baptist Church and Brilliant Star Tents Lodge. She was retired from Lorillard Tobacco Co.

She was married to Eugene Thacker, who predeceased her.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Millner and Joyce Wilson, both of Danville; a son, Tony Millner of Danville; and two sisters, Effie Nichilas and Doretha Harrington, both of Rockingham, N.C.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at East New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. M. Mack officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be at L.H. Brooks & Brothers today until 8 p.m., and at other times at the residence.

George Gauldin

George Benjamin Gauldin, 84, formerly of 1240 Myrtle Ave., died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born April 19, 1914, in Schoolfield, he was the son of Nathan Thomas Gauldin and Rebecca Cooper Gauldin.

He was married to Patty Buckner Gauldin, who died March 1, 1989.

A veteran of the U.S. Air Force and the National Guard, he served during World War II and during peacetime. He had spent most of his life in Schoolfield where he was a freelance printer.

He was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church, the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325, and the V.F.W.

He was the last member of his immediate family.

A private funeral will be held at the Cooper family cemetery in Franklin County.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

David Price

HAMPTON - David Price, 73, of 133 Camerson St., died Monday evening, Dec. 28, 1998, in Sentara Hampton General Hospital.

Born April 10, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Johnson Price and Mary Hodnett Price.

He was a retired employee of Hampton Institute and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two brothers, German Price of Youngstown, Ohio, and James Price of Sharon Hill, Pa.; six sisters, Mrs. Elmer King, Ruth Harris and Jewel Fuller, all of Chatham, Savannah Price of Sharon Hill, Pa., Helen Hairston of Philadelphia, and Silver Crews of Yanceyville, N.C.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Cubie, William "Pete" and Waverly Price; and three sisters, Minnie Price, Missy Price and Virginia P. Hairston.

A funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. today at Callands Baptist Church by the Rev. Obadele St. George, with burial following in the church cemetery.

Miller Funeral Home in Gretna is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Saunders Jr.

Charles "Chuck" Darnell Saunders Jr., 36, of 212 Clark St., died Thursday evening, Dec. 31, 1998, at his residence.

Born Feb. 5, 1963, in Danville, he was a son of the late Charles D. Saunders and Brenda Marshall Saunders Loftis, who survives.

He worked at Intertape as a towmotor operator. He was a member of Westover Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother of the residence, survivors include his stepfather, Gilbert Loftis Jr. of the residence; two sons, Jonathan Saunders and Zachery Saunders, both of Danville; a daughter, Tiffany Nicole Saunders of Danville; a brother, Randolph Greg Saunders of Harrison, Ohio; two stepbrothers, Sammy Loftis of Danville and Scotty Loftis of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a stepsister, Donna Pruitt of Danville; and his maternal grandfather, Randolph Marshall of Danville.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Westover Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug Barber and the Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence. Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Bane

RICHMOND - Ruby Kent Bane, 81, of Richmond, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital.

Born June 14, 1917, in Vernon Hill, she was the daughter of Charles Howard and Osie Moore Bane of Vernon Hill.

She was a graduate of Longwood College in Farmville, where she received a bachelor's degree in biology and general sciences. She also received advanced studies in nuclear medicine at the Oak Ridge Nuclear Facility in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

She was a science teacher at Halifax High School in Halifax; a chemist for American Tobacco Company in Richmond; a chemist in cancer research at the Medical College of Virginia; a chemist in research and diagnostic medical procedures at McGuire Veterans Hospital; and a chemist in nuclear medicine, also at McGuire Veterans Hospital.

She was a member of the American Chemical Society and the first woman admitted to the Virginia Academy of Science. She was a member of St. Marks Episcopal Church, Richmond.

She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Howard Bane of Vernon Hill.

Survivors include her brother, Sanford Bane of Greenville, S.C., and Vernon Hill.

Visitation will be held at the central chapel of Bennett Funeral Home at 3215 Cutshaw Ave. 1-2 p.m. today.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at St. Marks Episcopal Church in Richmond with the Rev. Dr. Sandra M. Levy officiating.

Following the Richmond service, she will be transported to Powell Funeral Home in South Boston for visitation 7-9 p.m. Monday.

A funeral will be held at the funeral home chapel Tuesday. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Baptist Church cemetery in Vernon Hill.
