Cheryl Bentley
MOAB, Utah - Cheryl East Bentley, 48, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, after several years of declining health in Mill Creek Health Care Center, Salt Lake City.
Born Jan. 16, 1950, in Danville, she was the daughter of John William "Bill" East and Marcella Pugh "Bobbie" East.
She graduated from Boyden High School in Salisbury, N.C., and received her bachelor and master's degrees from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.
In addition to her parents of Danville, survivors include two sisters, Cathy East Dubowski of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Christel Ann East of Hickory, N.C.
She was predeceased by one brother, John William East II, who died in September 1998.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday from Rivermont Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack N. Waddell officiating.

Russell Brachman
Dr. Russell C. Brachman, 74, of 139 Pendelton Road, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 27, 1925, in Pottsville, Pa., he was the son of Howard F. Brachman and Kathryn Lewis Brachman.
He was married
to Patricia Messick Brachman.
Dr. Brachman was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a retired biology professor, having taught 33 years at Averett College. He received his BS from Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania, his master's from Stetson University in Florida, and his doctorate from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.
He was a member of the Danville Model Railroaders, the current Director of the James River Division of the Mid Eastern Region of the National Model Railroaders Association, a member of Westbrook Society of Natural History, Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, and the City Beautiful Committee.
Dr. Brachman was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, where he was past chairman of the administrative board and the Sunday school teacher of Class 20.
In addition to his father of Danville and wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Rachel Brachman of Danville and Linda Woodard of Blairs; and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one step-grandmother Eva Lewis.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jay Ashby officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends today 7-8:30 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
S.M. "Steve" Carter Jr.
A memorial service for Silas Moody Carter Jr., also known as "Steve, " will be held 1-4 p.m. Sunday at the Howard Johnson Green Room in Danville.
He was found dead Dec. 5, 1998, at his home. Autopsy results show he died as a result of being hit in the back of the head with a blunt object.
Carter, 64, of Danville, was a professional pool player and gambler. He traveled the road for 40 years before returning to his Danville home in the late 1980s to care for his aging mother.
Born Oct. 14, 1934, he was the son of Ruby Shelton Carter, who died Nov. 23, 1996, and S.M. Carter Sr., who died Aug. 12, 1991.
He was married
seven times and his beliefs were that of P.T. Barnum and W.C. Fields.
His body was cremated.
John Collins
RINGGOLD - John William Collins, 66, of 892 Ringgold Church Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Born Feb. 5, 1932, in Rome, Ga., he was the son of Doverd Jerome Collins and Zelma Henderson Collins.
He was married
to Barbara Woods Collins, who survives.
He was retired from the U.S. Navy and moved to the Ringgold community in 1996, after he retired from a career with Lockheed-Martin Corp. in Manassas.
In addition to his mother of Niceville, Fla., and his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, John Jerome Collins of Arlington; two daughters, Julie Collins Antler and Janet Collins, both of Fairfax; three sisters, Martha Collins Wilson of Crestview, Fla., Elizabeth Collins of Rome, Ga., and Linda Collins Hertz of Miami, Fla.; and one brother, David Jerome Collins of Niceville, Fla.
A private memorial service is planned.
The family will receive friends 1-4 p.m. today at the residence.

Emily G. Grant
VIRGINIA BEACH - Emily Granger Grant, 91, of the 300 block of Lillian Avenue, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999.
Mrs. Grant was born in Elizabeth City, N.C., and was the widow of Sidney O. Grant.
She was a member of Woodland Heights Baptist Church, the Women's Missionary Union and Indian River Senior Citizens Club.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Cummings and her husband, Billy, of Spring Lake, N.C.; three sons, Oliver E. Grant of Parksley, L.G. "Sid" Grant and his wife, Shirley, of Danville, Claude B. Grant and his wife, Diane, of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Mary Robertson of Florida and Martha Holland of Norfolk; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel, with the Rev. Paul D. Moore officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Woodland Heights Baptist Church in Chesapeake.
Lottie Holt
Lottie Crews Holt, 78, of 1252 Stokes St., died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, in The Memorial Hospital of Martinsville-Henry County.
Born May 11, 1920, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Willie Crews and Margaret Hughes Crews.
She was married
to Clyde Holt.
She was a member of New Arbor Baptist Church. She was an employee of Dan River Inc. where she retired.
Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Williams of Danville; and one sister, Emily Crews, both of Danville.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at L.H. Brooks & Brothers Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Stamps officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
A viewing will be 2-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Lucy Horton
Lucy C. Horton, 76, of 450 Piney Forest Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 3, 1922, in Rice, she was the daughter of William Childress and Rosa Mae Childress.
She was married
to William Horton who survives.
She was a resident of Piney Forest Healthcare Center.
Survivors include two sons, Wilbert Childress of Danville and James Childress of Pittsylvania County; three sisters, May Childress and Louise Childress, both of Danville, and Julia Childress of Keeling; and one brother, Clarence Childress of Philadelphia, Pa.
A funeral will be held1 p.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Chapel. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, 131 Mabin St.
Charles Transou
Charles "Chuck" Eugene Transou, 68, of Danville, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Salem.
Born Feb. 13, 1930, in Danville, he was the beloved son of the late J.G. and Gertie Hammock Transou.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Tracy Nelson Transou and Rebecca Transou of Lynchburg, and their son Travis of Lynchburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Gale Marie Porter and Dr. James A. Porter III, and their children, Justin and Laura of Fayetteville, N.C., and Jared Porter of the U.S. Coast Guard; one brother, Jack L. Transou and wife Gaynelle Transou, both of Dry Fork; one sister and brother-in-law, Geraline T. Robertson and Bill Robertson, both of Lynchburg.
He was predeceased by one son, Robert "Bobby" Lee.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. today at Spring Hill cemetery, 3000 Fort Ave., Lynchburg, with the Rev. Dr. Don A. Garlock officiating. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 16.

Irona Wilson
Irona Bernice Brooks Hall Wilson, 59, of 1477 Aspen St., died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, after two years of declining health.
Born Oct. 24, 1939, in Chatham, she was the daughter of Irona Brooks and Elizabeth Conner Brooks Horton, who survives.
She was married
to Bethel L. Wilson, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her mother of Holly Springs, N.C., and husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Kimberly Ragsdale of Danville and Elizabeth Ann Gallaher of Topeka, Kan.; one sister, Josephine Bailey of Louisburg, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard McDowell officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
