Harvie Witcher
CHATHAM - Harvie Reid Witcher, 56, of 12301 Anderson Mill Road, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at his residence.
Born Aug. 14, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Stonewall Witcher and Irene Brown Witcher.
He was a member of Watson Level Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include one daughter, Kim Witcher of Martinsville; one stepdaughter, Youlander Witcher of Danville; two sisters, Dorothy Fuller of Chatham and Daisy Dawson of Washington, D.C.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Watson Level Baptist Church with the Rev. Katie McKenzie officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of the Rev. Dale Starling, 7801 Calland Road. Howerton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Geneva Young
Geneva Grace Young, 52, of 301 Plum St., died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
She was born in Washington County.
She was married
to Curtis Young, who survives.
She had lived in Danville most of her life. She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, James Smith and Doug Smith, both of Damascus; her stepmother, Ida Taylor of Tampa, Fla.; one half-sister, Diane Jones of Ridge Manor, Fla.; one half-brother, Eddie Jones of Vidalia, Ga.; and two granddaughters.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in Greenwood Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Roger Boyer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Johnson Funeral Home in Damascus and at other times at the residence of her son, James Smith.
John Barksdale Sr.
SOUTH BOSTON - John Barksdale Sr., 48, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, in Richmond.
Born April 2, 1950, in Halifax County, he was the son of Annie Chaney.
In addition to his mother of South Boston, survivors include six daughters, Phyllis Sweeney and Joann Hamlett, both of South Boston, Johanna Ferrell of Danville, Tonisha Barksdale, Betsy Barksdale and Priscilla Barksdale, all of Naruna; one son, John Barksdale Jr. of Naruna; three sisters, Rosa Walton of Halifax, Annie Edmonds and Patty Barksdale, both of South Boston; two brothers, George Barksdale of Rustburg, and David Barksdale of Staunton.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at New Vernon Baptist Church in Vernon Hill with the Rev. Roger Ford officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery in Nathalie.
A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 500 Westside Drive.

Cheryl East Bentley
MOAB, Utah - Cheryl East Bentley, 48, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, after several years of declining health in Mill Creek Health Care Center, Salt Lake City.
Born Jan. 16, 1950, in Danville, she was the daughter of John William "Bill" East and Marcella Pugh "Bobbie" East.
She graduated from Boyden High School in Salisbury, N.C., and received her bachelor and master's degrees from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.
In addition to her parents of Danville, survivors include two sisters, Cathy East Dubowski of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Christel Ann East of Hickory, N.C.
She was predeceased by one brother, John William East II, who died in September 1998.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday from Rivermont Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack N. Waddell officiating.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Russell Brachman
Dr. Russell C. Brachman, 73, of 139 Pendelton Road, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 27, 1925, in Pottsville, Pa., he was the son of Howard F. Brachman and Kathryn Lewis Brachman.
He was married
to Patricia Messick Brachman, who survives.
Dr. Brachman was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a retired biology professor, having taught 33 years at Averett College. He received his BS from Bloomsburg University in Pa., his master's from Stetson University in Florida, and his doctorate from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.
He was a member of the Danville Model Railroaders, the current Director of the James River Division of the Mid Eastern Region of the National Model Railroaders Asssociation, a member of Westbrook Society of Natural History, Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, and the City Beautiful Committee.
Dr. Brachman was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, where he was past chairman of the administrative board and the Sunday school teacher of Class 20.
In addition to his father of Danville and wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Rachel Brachman of Danville and Linda Woodard of Blairs; one step-grandmother Eva Lewis; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jay Ashby officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
S.M. "Steve" Carter Jr.
A memorial service for Silas Moody Carter Jr., also known as "Steve, " will be held 1-4 p.m. Sunday at the Howard Johnson Green Room in Danville.
He was found dead Dec. 5, 1998, at his home. Autopsy results show he died as a result of being hit in the back of the head with a blunt object.
Carter, 64, of Danville, was a professional pool player and gambler. He traveled the road for 40 years before returning to his Danville home in the late 1980's to care for his aging mother.
Born Oct. 14, 1934, he was the son of Ruby Shelton Carter, who died Nov. 23, 1996, and S.M. Carter Sr., who died Aug. 12, 1991.
He was married
seven times and his beliefs were that of P.T. Barnum and W.C. Fields.
His body was cremated.
Irene Crawford
Irene Nealy Crawford, 85, formerly of Danville, died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, in the Colonial Heights Convalescence Center in Colonial Heights. She had been a patient there for three years.
Born Nov. 6, 1913, in Damascus, she was the daughter of Hiram Nealy and Minnie Bryan Nealy.
She was married
to Raymond "Buck" Crawford, who died in 1983.
Most of her life was spent in Danville. She was retired from Dan River Inc. after 38 years of service. She was of the Baptist faith. She moved to Colonial Heights in 1983 to live with her daughter.
Survivors include two daughters, Judith Crawford Elliott of Colonial Heights and Ruth Marie Lovell of Burlington, N.C.; one son, William Wayne Crawford of Danville; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Schoolfield cemetery with the Rev. June Hughes officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her son, William Wayne Crawford, 833 Robertson Lane.
Malon Dalton Sr.
GRETNA - Malon Ray Dalton Sr., 55, of 3669 Owens Mill Road, died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 29, 1943, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Guy Owen Dalton Sr. and Mildred Younger Dalton.
He was married
to Frances Farris Dalton, who survives.
He was a farmer and an employee of Klopman. He was a member of Summersett Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and was a former Sunday school superintendent. He was also a member of the church softball team.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Malon Ray Dalton Jr. of Gretna; one daughter, Terri Renee Dalton of Collinsville; six brothers, Berkley Dalton of Hurt, Garry Dalton, Ronnie Dalton, Doug Dalton, Guy O. Dalton Jr., all of Gretna, Jerry Dalton of Penhook; four sisters, Barbara Hawkins, Louise Woolard, Betty George and Geraldine Ayers, all of Gretna.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Summersett Baptist Church with the Rev. Bert Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

L. Aubrey
L. Aubrey Goodson Jr., died Jan. 8, 1999.
He was born on Dec. 20, 1922, in Caswell County, N.C., son of Louie Aubrey Goodson Sr. and Lenna Neal Goodson.
He married
the former Bernice Carroll on July 23, 1945.
He is survived by his wife, of the home; two sons, Louie A. Goodson III of Charlotte, N.C. and Mark Edward Goodson, of Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Gayle Goodson Butler, of Des Moines, Iowa, and Mary Ellen Woods, of Cary, N.C.; a brother, William Neal Goodson, of Arlington, Va.; a sister, Nancy Goodson Parrott, of Greensboro, N.C.; and four granddaughters, Jessica Goodson, Margaret Goodson, Sarah Butler and Ellen Butler.
He was a graduate of North Carolina State University, B.S., and earned a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University School of Law. He was a combat veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Army in the European Theater of Operations, where he was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star for Valor, and the Silver Star for gallantry in action.
He practiced patent law in Washington, D.C., for ten years as a partner in the firm of Fisher, Christen and Goodson. For many years, he was associated with Dan River Inc. serving in a variety of capacities: Senior Vice President, Director of Research, and President of its Chemical Products Division, now Hickson DanChem Corporation. After retirement from Dan River, he became President and Chief Operating Officer of Charter Federal Savings Bank in Bristol, Va. At the time of his death, he was serving on the Board of Directors of the Daniel Group, Inc.
In 1980, he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship in the Textile Research Institute, in Princeton, New Jersey. He was also a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.
In civic activities, he was a former chairman of both Danville's City Planning Commission and First Federal Savings and Loan Association. He was also a former Director of the Memorial Hospital of Danville, Bristol Regional Medical Center, Danville Rotary Club, the Danville Salvation Army, the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, the Danville Golf Club, and the Country Club of Bristol.
He was an active member of First Baptist Church, where he served in many positions of responsibility, including Sunday School teacher. He was chairman of the current Board of Deacons.
The family will receive visitors on Saturday night, Jan. 9, 1999, from 7-8:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Danville, 871 Main St., Danville, Va. 24541.
Private interment will be held at Mountain View cemetery. Memorial service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Danville by Rev. Joey Faucette.
