Brenda Gravitt
SOUTH BOSTON - Brenda Love Lowery Gravitt, 52, of 1040 Bold Springs Road, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at her residence.
Born Sept. 12, 1946, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Herbert Lowery and Melissa Conner Lowery.
She was married
to Randolph Lloyd Gravitt, who survives.
She was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church. She was a Sales Representative for International Industrial Fan.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Shayne Dillard Gravitt of South Boston; one daughter, Lindsay Sydney Gravitt Ferguson of Vernon Hill; three sisters, Hazel Conner of Bay City, Texas, Kathryn McDowell of South Boston and Sandra Blanks of Roxboro, N.C.; three brothers, Alvin Lowery and Wallace Lowery, both of Smithfield, and Danny Lowery of Bay City, Texas; and one grandchild.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Lowery Abel.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Black Walnut Baptist Church with the Rev. Grover Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Shady Grove United Methodist Church cemetery, in Virgilina.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the Brooks Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.
Lucy Horton
Lucy C. Horton, 76, of 450 Piney Forest Rd., died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 3, 1922, in Riceville, she was the daughter of William Childress and Rosa Mae Childress.
She was married
to William Horton, who survives.
She was a resident of Piney Forest Health Care Center.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Willard Childress of Danville and James Childress of Pittsylvania County; three sisters, Mary Childress and Louise Reeves, both of Danville, and Julia Williams of Keeling; and one brother, Clarence Childress of Philadelphia, Pa.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. today at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, Willard Childress, 131 Mabin St.
Pattie Jennings
Pattie P. Jennings, 81, of 2123 North Main St., died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999.
Born May 2, 1917, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Abner Benjamin Pruitt and Lucy Mae Reese Pruitt.
She was married
to Matthew Jennings, who predeceased her in 1992.
She was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church. She lived most of her life in Danville, where she retired from Dan River Inc. after 41 years of service.
Survivors include one sister, Ella P. Farson of Java; and one brother, Sam S. Pruitt of Danville.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lee D. Ellison and Elder Danny Parker officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of the brother, 317 Hampton Drive and 103 Nor-Dan Drive.
Helen Staton
JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - Helen DuBose Staton, formerly of Danville, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, after a recent decline in health.
Born Feb. 5, 1910, in Danville, she was the daughter of Samuel P. DuBose and Hallie Tucker DuBose.
She was married
Jan. 3, 1934, to J.B. Staton, who predeceased her.
She was a resident of Jacksonville for the past eight years. She was previously a public health nurse and also worked as a nurse for many years at Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany.
Survivors include two daughters Barbara S. McMillian of Virginia Beach and Sue S. Taylor of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren and two great-granchildren.
A graveside service is planned 2 p.m. Jan. 16, 1999, at Highland Burial Park.
Melvin Towler
GRETNA - Melvin David Towler, 56, of 5444 West Gretna Road, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999.
Born June 27, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Elmer Custer Towler, who survives, and Stover Henry Towler Sr.
He was married
to Betty Barbour Towler, who survives.
He was owner and operator of Towler Taxi in Gretna and a National Guard veteran.
In addition to his mother of Danville, and wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Paul Towler of Hurt; one daughter, Angela Moore of Gretna; six brothers, Cecil Towler, Bobby Towler and Clyde Towler, all of Gretna, Stover Towler Jr., Tommy Towler, both of Chatham, and J.D. Towler of Danville; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Alvery Parr officiating. Burial will be in New Bethel Church of the Brethren cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of his daughter, Angela Moore, 23352 U.S. 29, Gretna.
Bernice Wilson
Bernice Brooks Hall Wilson, 59, of 1477 Aspen St., died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at her residence after two years of declining health.
Born Oct. 24, 1939, in Chatham, she was the daughter of Irona Brooks and Elizabeth Conner Brooks Horton, who survives.
She was married
to Bethel L. Wilson, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her mother of Holly Springs, N.C., and husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Kimberly Ragsdale of Danville and Elizabeth Ann Gallaher of Topeka, Kan.; one sister, Josephine Bailey of Louisburg, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard McDowell officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Clyde Woods
Clyde Cleon Woods, 86, of 903 Main St., died Friday morning, Jan. 8, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born July 29, 1912, in Greensboro, N.C., he was the son of John Woods and Mary Swink Woods.
He was married
Dec. 24, 1940, to Irene Anglin Woods, who died Oct. 12, 1998.
He was a retired insurance agent for Southwestern Life Insurance Co. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. James Albert officiating with military honors conducted by American Legion Post No. 325 Honor Guard.

Clyde Connor, Jr.
CASCADE-Clyde Franklin Connor Jr., 68, of 13996 Martinsville Hwy., died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, in Danville.
Born Nov. 21, 1930, in High Point, N.C., he was the son of Clyde F. Connor and Violet Wood Connor, who survives.
He was married
to Mary Meeker Connor, who survives.
He had lived in the Danville area since 1960 and was a retired area manager for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company after 23 years of service. He was also a cattle farmer for the last 15 years in the Brosville-Cascade area. He graduated from North Carolina State College in 1954 and served as a 1st Lt. in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956.
He was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church where he was a member of the choir, a member of the administrative board, past chairman of missions, active in disaster relief missions, was past president of the United Methodist men and active in the "Walk to Emmaus."
In addition to his mother of Danville and his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Shane Connor of Danville; four daughters, Mary Jo Kent of Cascade, Colleen Connor and Maureen Engels, both of Charlotte, N.C., and Susan Moss of Macon, Ga.; and four grandsons.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Fairview United Methodist Church with the Rev. O.H. Burton officiating. Interment
will be in the Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the Fairview United Methodist Church and at other times at the residence.

Bruce Elliot
CHATHAM-Bruce Forbes Elliot, 83, of 25 Holt St., died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center in Danville.
Born Feb. 1, 1915, in Reed City, Mich., he was the son of Robert Elliot and Nora Wheaton Elliot.
He was married
to Katherine Whitehead Elliott, who predeceased him.
Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth E. Morris, of Columbus, Ind.; three sons, Scott Forbes Elliot of Upsilanti, Mich., Ward W. Elliot of Riner and Douglas W. Elliott of Chatham; two sisters, Ardith E. Pearce of Grand Rapids, Mich., and June E. Canterburg of Lansing, Mich.; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Red Cross.

Keith Fields
Robert Keith Fields, 93, of 164 Montague St., died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999 at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 28, 1905 in Chatham County, N.C., he was the son of Robert Horace Fields and Mary Bell Dowdy Fields.
He was married
to Frances Travis Fields, who predeceased him Jan. 19, 1998.
He lived most of his Danville and owned and operated Keith's Amoco Service Station for a number of years until his retirement in 1967.
He was a member of the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, where he was a member of Class 20. He was a former member of the Host Lions Club, the Loyal Order of Moose, Legion of Moose and Fellowship of Moose-3rd Degree.
Survivors include one son, Robert F. Fields of Danville; one sister, Louise F. Clements of Durham, N.C.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held 4 p.m. today at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jay Ashby, the Rev. Dr. Woodrow Giles and the Rev. Lawrence Knott officiating.
The family will be at the residence of his son, at 309 First Court.
