L. Aubrey Goodson Jr.
L. Aubrey Goodson Jr., died Jan. 8, 1999.
He was born on Dec. 20, 1922, in Caswell County, N.C., son of Louie Aubrey Goodson Sr. and Lenna Neal Goodson.
He married
the former Bernice Carroll on July 23, 1945.
He is survived by his wife, of the home; two sons, Louie A. Goodson III of Charlotte, N.C. and Mark Edward Goodson, of Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Gayle Goodson Butler, of Des Moines, Iowa, and Mary Ellen Woods, of Cary, N.C.; a brother, William Neal Goodson, of Arlington, Va.; a sister, Nancy Goodson Parrott, of Greensboro, N.C.; and four granddaughters, Jessica Goodson, Margaret Goodson, Sarah Butler and Ellen Butler.
He was a graduate of North Carolina State University, B.S., and earned a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University School of Law. He was a combat veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Army in the European Theater of Operations, where he was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star for Valor, and the Silver Star for gallantry in action.
He practiced patent law in Washington, D.C., for ten years as a partner in the firm of Fisher, Christen and Goodson. For many years, he was associated with Dan River Inc. serving in a variety of capacities: Senior Vice President, Director of Research, and President of its Chemical Products Division, now Hickson DanChem Corporation. After retirement from Dan River, he became President and Chief Operating Officer of Charter Federal Savings Bank in Bristol, Va. At the time of his death, he was serving on the Board of Directors of the Daniel Group, Inc.
In 1980, he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship in the Textile Research Institute, in Princeton, New Jersey. He was also a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.
In civic activities, he was a former chairman of both Danville's City Planning Commission and First Federal Savings and Loan Association. He was also a former Director of the Memorial Hospital of Danville, Bristol Regional Medical Center, Danville Rotary Club, the Danville Salvation Army, the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, the Danville Golf Club, and the Country Club of Bristol.
He was an active member of First Baptist Church, where he served in many positions of responsibility, including Sunday School teacher. He was chairman of the current Board of Deacons.
Private interment will be held at Mountain View cemetery. Memorial service will be held on today at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Danville by Rev. Joey Faucette.

Pattie Jennings
Pattie P. Jennings, 81, of 2123 North Main St., died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999.
Born May 2, 1917, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Abner Benjamin Pruitt and Lucy Mae Reese Pruitt.
She was married
to Matthew Jennings, who predeceased her in 1992.
She was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church. She lived most of her life in Danville, where she retired from Dan River Inc. after 41 years of service.
Survivors include one sister, Ella P. Farson of Java; and one brother, Sam S. Pruitt of Danville.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lee D. Ellison and Elder Danny Parker officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of the brother, 317 Hampton Drive and 103 Nor-Dan Drive.
James Jones
HALIFAX - James Wesley Jones, 75, of 4130 Pleasant Grove Road, died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, at Durham County Regional Hospital.
Born July 12, 1923, in Halifax County, he as the son of Obie Lee Jones and Annie Ruth Burton Jones.
He was a member of the Arrons Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Dorothy Louise Jones of Halifax; and two brothers, Roy W. (Billy) Jones of Halifax and Charlie Henry Jones of Bachelors Hall.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. today at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Wilder officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Grove United Church of Christ cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Clyde Connor, Jr.
CASCADE, Va. - Clyde Franklin Connor Jr., 68, of 13996 Martinsville Hwy., died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, in Danville.
Born Nov. 21, 1930, in High Point, N.C., he was the son of Clyde F. Connor and Violet Wood Connor, who survives.
He was married
to Mary Meeker Connor, who survives.
He had lived in the Danville area since 1960 and was a retired area manager for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company after 23 years of service. He was also a cattle farmer for the last 15 years in the Brosville-Cascade area. He graduated from North Carolina State College in 1954 and served as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956.
He was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church where he was a member of the choir, a member of the administrative board, past chairman of missions, active in disaster relief missions, was past president of the United Methodist men and active in the "Walk to Emmaus."
In addition to his mother of Danville and his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Shane Connor of Danville; four daughters, Mary Jo Kent of Cascade, Colleen Connor and Maureen Engels, both of Charlotte, N.C., and Susan Moss of Macon, Ga.; and four grandsons.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. today at Fairview United Methodist Church with the Rev. O.H. Burton officiating. Interment
will be in the Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Douglas Jamerson
CHATHAM, Va. - Douglas Jamerson, 73, of Collie Street, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, in Danville.
Born March 19, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Sam and Ethel Jamerson.
He was married
to Hattie C. Jamerson, who predeceased him.
A member of Little Mt. Zion Holiness Church, he was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include one son, James MacArthur Jamerson of Chatham; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Little Mt. Zion Holiness Church with Elder Mandora Hayes officiating. Burial will be in New Jerusalem Church cemetery, Java.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. James Jamerson, Route 5.

Nancy Leonard
PALMER SPRINGS, Va. - Nancy Wilson Leonard, 69, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, in Durham, N.C.
She was the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Tanner Wilson.
She was married
to Johnnie M. Leonard, who predeceased her.
She was a registered nurse who retired as supervisor at Warren Hills Nursing Home. She was a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Rusty Thrift of Danville, and Gregory W. Thrift of Palmer Springs; one daughter, Elizabeth L. Reekes of Palmer Springs; one brother, William B. "Billy" Wilson of Palmer Springs; and seven grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Union Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lyman Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Linda Powell
RIDGEWAY, Va. - Linda Ann Powell, 51, of 124 Shannon Court, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at her residence after a period of declining health since November 1996.
Born June 10, 1947, in Danville, she was the daughter of Benjamin T. Adams and Annie McGregor Adams, who survive.
She lived most of her life in Danville and had been a resident of Ridgeway since 1985. She was a homemaker and was a graduate of Averett College.
She was a member of Grace Baptist Church.
She was married
on Dec. 29, 1967 to Jimmy Lee Powell, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence and her parents, survivors include two sons, Kenneth Lee Powell and Steven Ray Powell, both of Ridgeway; two sisters Fay A. Walters of Blanch, N.C., and Peggy A. Puffenberger of Staunton; and one brother, Tom Adams of Danville.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, Danville, with the Rev. David Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence.
Mae Puryear
HALIFAX, Va. - Mae Bane Puryear, 84, of 3051 Mountain Road, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born May 6, 1914, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Matthew William Bane and Lula Miller Bane.
She was married
to Andrew Puryear, who survives.
She was a member of the County Line Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of Halifax, survivors include one brother, Aylor Bane of Java.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joey Cantrell officiating. Burial will be in County Line Baptist Church cemetery.

Edna Showalter
RICHMOND, Va. - Edna Elizabeth Kiely Showalter, 84, formerly of Williamsburg and Kenbridge, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, in Bon Secours Stuart Circle Hospital.
Born Nov. 6, 1914, in Bristol, she was the daughter of Robert Vance Kiely and Edna Plora Lockett Kiely.
She was married
to Dr. Henry Bernard Showalter of Kenbridge, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg.
Survivors include one son, Henry Bernard Showalter Jr. of Richmond; one daughter, Edna Lockett Showalter Van Voorhis of Berryville; one brother, Robert Vance Kiely Jr. of Bluefield, W.Va.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She also was predeceased by one son, Robert C. Showalter.
The family will receive friends from 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Tuesday at Clarke Funeral Home in Kenbridge. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Kenbridge cemetery with the Rev. Charles Smith of Kenbridge Baptist Church and Rev. Canon Dwight L. Brown, Rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Berryville, officiating.
