Shirley Vasold
DANVILLE, Va. - Shirley Thompson Vasold, 79, of 125 Brookview Road, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, in the Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Nov. 9, 1919, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of Jack Thompson and Mary Poole Thompson.
She was married
to Robert "Andy" Vasold, who survives.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and an associate member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Randy Vasold of Faber; three brothers, Erle Thompson, Lawrence Thompson and Jimmy Thompson, all of Lynchburg; two sisters, Ancy Roark of Lynchburg and Nancy Taylor of Stafford; and six grandchildren. She was predeceased by one daughter, Carold Vasold Sparks, four brothers and two sisters.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fort Hill cemetery in Lynchburg with the Rev. Levi Stroud officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Anne Walker
LYNCHBURG, Va. - Anne Elizabeth Walker, 87, of Camelot Hall Nursing Home, died Jan. 10, 1999.
Born May 21, 1912, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of Stonewall Jackson Walker and Annie Sue Pearson Walker.
She graduated from Ferrum Training School in 1932.
Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Rachel Walker Sutton and the Rev. Charles E. Sutton of Lynchburg; one niece and her husband, Martha Sutton Wild and David Wild of Richmond; one nephew and his wife, C.W. Sutton and Kim Sutton of Columbia, S.C.; three nieces, Megan Sutton and Kelly Sutton of Columbia, S.C., and Carolyn Wild of Richmond; and one nephew, Matthew Charles Wild of Richmond.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Dr. L. Wayne Meredith officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her sister, Rachel Sutton, 1253 Krise Circle, Lynchburg.
The family suggests that memorials may be made to the North Minister Presbyterian Church Capital Fund, 101 Clearview Drive, Madison Heights, Va. 24572.
Albert Watkins
DANVILLE, Va. - Albert "Nookie" Watkins, 67, of 18 Laurel Ave., died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health since 1992.
Born April 5, 1931, in Danville, he was the son of Newton Frank Watkins and Lillie Mae Reynolds Watkins.
He was married
to Ruth Reynolds Watkins, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Greensboro, N.C., and in Danville where he was a truck driver for various companies.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in the Korean War.
He was of the Baptist faith and was the last surviving member of his generation.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Pam Watkins of Archdale, N.C.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Schoolfield cemetery with the Rev. Allen Holder officiating.The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Lela Wilson
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Lela Bishop Wilson, 88, of Ooltewah, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999. She lived in Ooltewah since 1997 after moving from Danville, Va., where she had lived since 1919.
She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Danville, Va., and was a gray lady. She also was a retired seamstress with Anderson Bros.
She was married
to Elbert H. Wilson, who predeceased her.
Survivors include two daughters, Dr. Virginia Pitts of Ooltewah and Vera Hill of Franklinton, N.C.; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Highland Memorial Park in Danville, Va., with the Elder Charles Hutcherson officiating.

Gladys Gordon
SOUTH HILL, Va. - Gladys Thomas Gordon, 85, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, after a brief illness.
She was the daughter of Samuel S. Thomas and Bernice Crowder Thomas. She was married
to Haywood Elam Gordon Sr., who predeceased her.
She was retired from La Cross Sportswear and was a member for more than 60 years of Union Level Baptist Church, serving as secretary and treasurer for more than 35 years. She also served in the WMU of the church.
Survivors include one son, Elam Gordon of South Hill; two sisters, Edna T. Hamlin of South Hill and Hazel Snead of Kenbridge; one brother, Snead Thomas of Danville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Farrar Funeral Chapel with the Rev. William Blalock and Dr. Buddy Miller officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Ruby Graves
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruby Willie Graves, 95, of 450 Piney Forest Road, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, at Piney Forest Nursing Home.
Born April 30, 1903, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Bill Saunders and Lydia Osborne Saunders.
She was married
to Charlie Wilbert Graves, who predeceased her.
Survivors include two daughters, Ann Barber of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Kate Adams of Ringgold; and two sons, Percy Graves of Detroit, Mich., and Deacon Rodgers Plunkett of Washington, D.C.
She was the last surviving member of her generation.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Holy Tabernacle of Jesus Christ by Bishop Peggy Motley. Burial will be in the Saunders family cemetery in Ringgold. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Kate Adams, 5231 Tom Fork Road, Ringgold.

Pearl Osborne
CHATHAM, Va. - Helen Pearl Osborne, 96, of 2135 Cooksburg Road, died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999, at her residence.
Born June 15, 1902, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Thomas Barbour and Mary Hardy Barbour. She was married
to Frank James Osborne and was the oldest member of Greenbay Christian Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Bertha Osborne of Martinsville, Claire I. Osborne and "Trudie" Owen, both of Chatham; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Greenbay Christian Church with the Rev. Rudy Hearn, the Rev. J.D. Hunt III and the Rev. Darrell Campbell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Alise Rowland
RINGGOLD, Va. - Alise Shelton Rowland, 73, 1149 Fall Creek Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for several years.
Born June 15, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of E.B. Shelton and Ola Owen Shelton.
She had lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and she was a homemaker. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. On Sept. 30, 1942, she was married
to Millard Curtis Rowland.
In addition to her mother of Danville and her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Cynthia R. Rozewicz of Danville, and Ellen R. Whitt of Knightdale, N.C.; one son, Richard W. Rowland of Callands; one brother, Barnard B. Shelton of Danville; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Douglas Carroll Rowland Sr.A private graveside service will be held Thursday in Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Howard Green officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
Jeff Walker
DANVILLE, Va. - Carroll Eston "Jeff" Walker Sr., 80, of 1559 Kentuck Road, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after declining in health since 1995. He had been hospitalized for six days.
Born Oct. 1, 1918, in Franklin County, he was the son of William Henry Walker and Lucy Maude Adams Walker.
He was married
March 25, 1950, to Jerrine Brown Walker, who survives.
Mr. Walker had lived in Danville and Pittsylvania County his entire life. Prior to his retirement, he was an auto body technician. He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, a trustee and former lay leader and Sunday school superintendent. A member of the Hall of Fame and a life member of the Danville Bowling Association, he was a member of the Danville chapter, American Legion Post No. 325.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served in World War II and the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include three sons, Carroll E. Walker Jr. and his wife, Martha A. Walker, of Ringgold, Michael A. Walker and his wife, Charlotte P. Walker of Dallas, Texas, and Jerry E. Walker of Danville; four sisters, Evelyn Hall and Mildred Thomas, both of Danville, Ada Pleasant of Purley, N.C., and Mabel Paschal of Ruffin N.C.; three granddaughters, Jennifer Walker of Ringgold, and Whitney Walker and Adrienne Walker, both of Dallas, Texas; and two grandsons, Matthew Walker of Ringgold and Brent Walker of Dallas, Texas.
He was predeceased by one sister, Ellen Brumfield; and three brothers, Willie Walker, Turner Walker and James Walker. A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at St. Luke's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Howard Green officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park with military honors by American Legion Post No. 325.

Joe Wilson
DANVILLE, Va. - Joseph "Joe" Paul Wilson Jr., 54, of 127 Berman Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at his residence after a decline in health for the past year.
Born July 23, 1944, in Danville, he was the son of the late Joseph Paul Wilson Sr. and Bertha Coffey Wilson.
He had lived in Rochester, N.Y., prior to moving back to Danville to live for the past 12 years. He had worked as house manager for the Danville Post No. 1097, Veteran's of Foreign Wars, until his health began to fail. He served with the U.S. Coast Guard.
In addition to his mother of Danville, survivors include his life partner, Denise Mallon of the residence; one daughter, Kimberly Wilson of Rushville, N.Y.; and two sisters, Ann W. Jones of Gainsville, Ga., and Joyce W. Ingold of Monroe, N.C.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. John C. Gentry officiating.
