Walter Jones
DANVILLE, Va. - Walter L. Jones, 67, of 200 Kemper Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 14, 1931, in Tioga, W.Va., he was the son of Clarence Leon Jones and Jennie Mae Huff Jones.
He became a christian before his death. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, and was employed as an industrial mechanic.
Survivors include one daughter Debra J. Slomski of Erie, Pa.; four sons, Ralph "Jeffrey" Jones, Gary W. Jones and Patrick A. Jones, all of Danville, Keith E. Jones of Calif.; one brother Keith C. Jones of Florida; 20 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sons, Walter R. Jones and Michael K. Jones and three sisters, Linda J. Thompson, Patty J. Salisbury and Jeanine J. Williams.
A private family service will be held at a later date.

Alene Moore
DANVILLE, Va. - Alene Jacobs Keen Moore, 67, of 226 Central St., died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after being hospitalized for nine days.
Born Sept. 11, 1931, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Ollie "Buster" Bennett Jacobs and Elizabeth "Bea" Shelton Jacobs.
She was married
to Russell Aubrey Keen who predeceased her June 4, 1966, and later to Daniel Lee Moore who predeceased on her Oct. 20, 1985.
She has lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. She retired from the Chatham Development Corp. She was a member of North Main Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Marie Keen of Virginia Beach, Va., three sons, Michael Aubrey Keen of Chatham, Robert Carroll Keen and Ralph Everett Keen, both of Danville; one sister, Barbara Jacobs Finch of Fairfax County; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at North Main Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Eddie Davis and the Rev. Shelby Royal officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence.
Alise Rowland
RINGGOLD, Va. - Alise Shelton Rowland, 73, 1149 Fall Creek Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for several years.
Born June 15, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of E.B. Shelton and Ola Owen Shelton.
She had lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and she was a homemaker.
She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
On Sept. 30, 1942, she was married
to Millard Curtis Rowland.
In addition to her mother of Danville and her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Cynthia R. Rozewicz of Danville, and Ellen R. Whitt of Knightdale, N.C.; one son, Richard W. Rowland of Callands; one brother, Barnard B. Shelton of Danville; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Douglas Carroll Rowland Sr.
A private graveside service will be held today in Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Howard Green officiating.
Landon Smith, Jr.
GREAT FALLS, Mont. - Landon "Smitty" Frances Smith, Jr., 54, of 152 Riverview D, Great Falls, Mont., died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at his residence.
Born March 15, 1944, in Axton, Va., he was the son of Thelma Smith and Landon F. Smith, who predeceased in 1986.
He was married
in 1974, to Roberta Gunness, who survives.
He was a graduate of Brosville High School. He served in the United States Air Force from 1962-1990 working with security police and missile control. He retired as Master Sergeant from the United States Air Force in 1990, having served 26 years. He had worked for two years at Anaconda Mining Company. At the time of his death, he was employed at Gagnon Reprographics in Great Falls.
In addition to his mother of Axton, Va., and his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Dawn M. Smith of Great Falls; one son Landon F. Smith of Great Falls; three brothers Jesse "Red" Smith of Danville, Charles Smith of Reidsville, N.C., and David Smith of Axton.
A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Anderson Chapel Church on Medical Center Road in Axton with the Rev. Mark Wimmer officiating.
Charles Adkins
CHATHAM, Va. - Charles Edward Adkins, 55, of 2825 Glenn View Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Born Aug. 15, 1943, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Virginia Daye Adkins, who survives, and Jessie Adkins.
In addition to his mother, survivors include two sons, Mark Anthony Adkins of Craigsville and Shandon Lee Adkins of Danville; three daughters, Sylvia Dianne Miller, Angela Jermaine Womack and Shamika Denise Adkins, all of Danville; three brothers, John A. Adkins, David J. Adkins and Richard Lee Adkins, all of Chatham; four sisters, Virginia Fuller and Frances Wooding, both of Callands, Barbara A. Adkins of Chatham and Nancy Penn of Martinsville; and seven grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at Callands Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Obadalee St. George officiating and Dr. Roy Dalton, eulogist. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his mother, 2825 Glenn View Drive.

Ida Gunn
Ida Mae Conley Gunn, 50, of 708 Claiborne St., died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 8, 1948, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Mary Conley.
She was married
to Robert Gunn, who survives.
She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of Danville, survivors include two sons, Donald Gunn and Robert Gunn Jr., both of Danville; one daughter, Rosa Mae Gunn of Danville; and one sister, Fannie A. Hamlett of Ringgold; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Howard Graves officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

John Hall
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. John Wesley Hall, 94, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center.
Born June 19, 1904, in Halifax County, he was the son of Nathanial J. Hall.
Survivors include one niece, Eva W. Eades of Halifax; and one nephew, Harvey Wood of South Boston.
A graveside service will be held 4 p.m. today in Union United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating.

Gladys Hylton
DANVILLE, Va. - Gladys Hylton, 68, of 332 Horseshoe Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at her residence.
Born March 21, 1930, in Danville, she was the daughter of John Will Lipford and Mary Dove Lipford.
She was married
July 23, 1949, to Ernest T. Hylton Jr. who died on Feb. 19, 1991.
She had lived all her life in the Danville area and was formerly employed with Dan River Inc. She was a member of Vandola Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Ernest T. Hylton III of the residence; one daughter, Susan H. Hutson of Dry Fork; one sister, Catherine H. Clements of Arlington; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. today at Greenhill cemetery. The Rev. Mike Hearp will officiate.

Pearl Keatts
RINGGOLD, Va. - Pearl Barber Keatts, 94, of 2957 Hillside Road, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after the past three years of declining health after being in the hospital for the past ten days.
Born March 27, 1904, in the Brosville community, she was the daughter of James Franklin Barber and Elizabeth Murphy Barber.
She was married
April 9, 1921, to Horace Eugene Keatts, who predeceased her.
She lived in the Brosville community most of her life and was a housewife. She lived with her daughter Iris Jones in Ringgold before she went into the hospital. She was the oldest member of Hillcrest Baptist Church on Westover Drive, and was a member of the Agape Sunday school class at the church.
Survivors include four daughters, Jereline Keatts Hyler of Cascade, Va., Frances Keatts Hyle of Pelham, N.C., Edna Keatts Davis of Bachelors Hall, and Iris Keatts Jones of Ringgold; four sons, Noble J. Keatts of Cascade, Marvin T. Keatts of Martinsville, and Elvin D. Keatts of Axton and Willis B. Keatts of Brosville; 17 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grancdhildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Burton E. Keatts Sr.; two sisters and two brothers.
She was the last surviving member of her family.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Francis Martin and the Rev. Dr. Ross Range Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of her son, Noble Keatts, 1446 Martinsville Highway at West Fork.
