Chester Logan
SILVER SPRING, Md.- Chester Junious Logan, 60, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, at Holy Cross Hospital in Maryland.
Born June 19, 1938, he was the son of Sally Ann Logan, who survives.
He was married
to Alice C. Logan, who also survives.
In addition to his mother and wife, survivors include three brothers, Howard Logan, Charlie Logan and David Logan; three daughters, Pamela Johnson, Sherri Williams and Cathy Florence; three sons, Alvin Logan, Reginald Smalls and Andre Smalls; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Loyal Baptist Church with the Rev. Lovelle Maxwell officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. today at Fisher and Watkins Chapel and at other times at the residence of his mother at 217 Witcher Road, Ringgold.
Alene Moore
DANVILLE, Va. - Alene Jacobs Keen Moore, 67, of 226 Central St., died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after being hospitalized for nine days.
Born Sept. 11, 1931, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Ollie "Buster" Bennett Jacobs and Elizabeth "Bea" Shelton Jacobs.
She was married
to Russell Aubrey Keen, who died on June 4, 1966, and later she was married
to Daniel Lee Moore, who died on Oct. 20, 1985.
She lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. She retired from the Chatham Development Corp. She was a member of North Main Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Marie Keen of Virginia Beach, Va.; three sons, Michael Aubrey Keen of Chatham, Robert Carroll Keen and Ralph Everett Keen, both of Danville; one sister, Barbara Jacobs Finch of Fairfax County; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at North Main Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Eddie Davis and the Rev. Shelby Royal officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Clide Scarce
Clide Mae Scarce, 82, of 182 Westhampton Ave., died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 18, 1916, in Danville, she was the daughter of John Wesley Scarce and Bessie Smiley Scarce.
She was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church and was retired from Dan River Inc. executive offices, where she was employed as an executive secretary.
Survivors include one brother John Wesley Scarce Jr. of Danville; and one sister, Eva Scarce Thompson of Danville.
She was predeceased by one brother, Percy J. Scarce; and two sisters, Ruth Scarce Fitch and Margaret Scarce Hite.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lee Ellison officiating. A private interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence and also at the residence of her brother, 154 Clarendon Circle.
Timothy Barksdale
DANVILLE, Va. - Timothy Lee Barksdale, 38, of 136 Greenwich Ave., died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, in Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington, N.C.
Born July 28, 1960, in Danville, he was the son of John D. Barksdale and the late Alease Brown Barksdale.
He was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church.
In addition to his father of Ringgold, survivors include two sisters, Derinda Harrington and Tessie Davis, both of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Kentuck Baptist Church with the Rev. Jesse Fitz officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
Remains may be viewed Saturday afternoon at L.H. Brooks & Brothers Funeral Home until 8 p.m. The family will be at the residence.
Jeffrey Cumberbatch
DANVILLE, Va. - Jeffrey Cumberbatch, 33, of 147 Ficklin Ave., died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, in State Farm.
Born Aug. 29, 1966, in Endicott-Johnson, N.Y., he was the son of Steve Cumberbatch and Eloise Hodge Cumberbatch, who survives.
In addition to his mother of Danville, survivors include one daughter, Bridgette Cumberbatch of Danville; one brother, Steve Cumberbatch Jr. of Salisburg, Md.; and his maternal grandmother, Ethel Hodge of Danville.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hayward Hodge officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Elwyn Giles
CHATHAM, Va. - Elwyn Douglas Giles, 87, of 189 Newby Lane, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 7, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of George Wilson Giles and Lillie Easley Giles.
A member of Concord United Methodist Church, he was a retired farmer.
He was married
to Annie Leafy Motley Giles, who predeceased him.
Survivors include two daughters, Callie Giles Gallier of Florence, S.C., and Elnora Giles of Chatham; five sisters, Irene G. Somers, Edith G. Massey and Eva G. Oakey, all of Reidsville, N.C., Margaret G. Dalton of Cleveland, Tenn., and Pearl G. Cowan of Danville; two brothers, Ernest Giles and Haynesworth Giles, both of Danville; and his grandson, Kenneth Lee Gallier Jr.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Concord United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Darrell T. Campbell officiating, with burial in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence. Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Pearl Keatts
RINGGOLD, Va. - Pearl Barber Keatts, 94, of 2957 Hillside Road, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after the past three years of declining health after being in the hospital for the past ten days.
Born March 27, 1904, in the Brosville community, she was the daughter of James Franklin Barber and Elizabeth Murphy Barber.
She was married
April 9, 1921, to Horace Eugene Keatts, who predeceased her.
She lived in the Brosville community most of her life and was a housewife. She lived with her daughter Iris Jones in Ringgold before she went into the hospital. She was the oldest member of Hillcrest Baptist Church on Westover Drive, and was a member of the Agape Sunday school class at the church.
Survivors include four daughters, Jereline Keatts Hyler of Cascade, Va., Frances Keatts Hyler of Pelham, N.C., Edna Keatts Davis of Bachelors Hall, and Iris Keatts Jones of Ringgold; four sons, Noble J. Keatts of Cascade, Marvin T. Keatts of Martinsville, and Elvin D. Keatts of Axton and Willis B. Keatts of Brosville; 17 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Burton E. Keatts Sr.; two sisters and two brothers.
She was the last surviving member of her family.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Francis Martin and the Rev. Dr. Ross Range Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will be at the residence of her son, Noble Keatts, 14446 Martinsville Highway at West Fork.

DANVILLE, Va. - Folger "Bill" L. Moorefield, 77, of 136 Brookview Road, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 7, 1921, in Surry County, N.C., he was a son of John Harry Moorefield and Jennie "Sissie" Woods Moorefield.
He was married
on July 1, 1949, to Mildred Cox Moorefield.
He was a member of Emmanuel Wesleyan Church, Poquoson Tribe No. 124, Improved Order of Red Men, and the Dan River Retirees Club. Until his retirement in 1984, he was employed as a receiving clerk at Dan River Inc.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Jennifer M. Moorefield of Danville; and a sister, Carrie M. Taylor of Danville.
He was predeceased by a brother, James Thomas Moorefield.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from the chapel of Barker Funeral Home with the Rev. William Clark, the Rev. Jimmy Stone and the Rev. Kendall Jenkins officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
