Silas Smith
DANVILLE, Va. - Silas Walter Smith, 93, died Friday morning, Jan. 15, 1999, while in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Oct. 4, 1905, in Hertford, N.C., he was a son of Silas Wolford Smith and Eugenia Harris Smith.
Mr. Smith moved to Danville at an early age and attended public schools, graduating from Danville High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He worked for several years in the equipment department for Western Electric Co. and Western Union Telegraph Co. He was the owner and general manager of Perkinson Foundry and Machine Co. until his retirement.
Mr. Smith was a charter member of Tuscarora Country Club and Trinity United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mabel Boyd Smith of Danville; one daughter, Debra Smith Adams of Danville; two granddaughters, Courtney Michelle Adams and Katherine Smith Adams.
A graveside service will be held Sunday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Levi Stroud.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at his daughter's residence, 806 Audubon Drive.

Lorena Holland
DANVILLE Va. - Lorena H. Holland, 84, of 459 Locust Lane, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care.
Born June 25, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Percy E. Hodge, Sr. and Mary Tucker Hodge.
She worked for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. as a shift worker. She was a member of White Rock Baptist Church.
Survivors include one brother, Willie Hodge of the residence; and two sisters, Bessie Smith and Gladys Allen, both of Danville.
A funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Cunningham & Hughes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Walter M. Tinsley officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The remains may be viewed from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Nellie Long
DANVILLE, Va. - Nellie Mae Jamerson Long, 78, of 244 Crane Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 17, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Ben and Annie Jamerson.
She was married
to Ahrmed Long who predeceased her.
Survivors include seven sons, Aubrey Long of Callands, Raymond Long, Ahrmed H. Long, and Wallace Vaden, all of Blairs, Curtis Long of Chatham, Lewis Long of California, and Robert Long of Fairfax; one daughter, Lena Mae McMair of Danville; 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Monday, Jan. 17, at 1 p.m. at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Garnett Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at 4500 Spring Garden Road in Chatham.
Jeffery McCormick
DANVILLE, Va. - Jeffery Ray McCormick, 18, of 1861 Kentuck Road, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at his residence.
Born Sept. 30, 1980, in Danville, he was the son of Barbara M. McCormick, who predeceased him, and Dudley Ray McCormick.
He was an homor graduate of Dan River High School in 1998, and was a member of the JROTC, the Junior Beta Club, the football team and the baseball team. He was listed in Who's Who among American High School Students, and an All-American Scholar. He was a student at Danville Community College. He attended Christian Fellowship Center Church of God.
Survivors include his father of the residence; a half-brother, Bobby Wilson of Danville; and a step-grandmother, Juanita McGuire of Sutherlin.
A funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Neal Isom and the Rev. Ron Graham officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends today from 7-8:30 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, and other times at the residence.
Janice McKinney
DANVILLE, Va. - Janice Dodd McKinney, 80, of 525 Skyline Ave., died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born July 16, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Hughes Dodd and Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Dodd.
She was married
to Woodrow Wilson McKinney on Dec. 26, 1938.
She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church where she was active in all phases of church work. She retired in 1980 from Dan River Inc., after 43 years service. She worked in No. 8B Dress. She was also a member of the Dan River Retired Worker's Club.
Survivors include her husband of the residence; one son, John Dodd McKinney of Towson, Md.; one step-sister, Doris Haber of Silvis, Ill.; and two step-brothers, Thomas Townsend of California and Leon Townsend of Danville.
She was predeceased by her step-mother, Verlie Lewis; a son, David McKinney; and a sister, Frances Hancock.
A funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Beck officiating. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.

'Bill' Moorefield
DANVILLE, Va. - Folger L. "Bill" Moorefield, 77, of 136 Brookview Road, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 7, 1921, in Surry County, N.C., he was a son of John Harry Moorefield and Jennie "Sissie" Woods Moorefield.
He was married
on July 1, 1949, to Mildred Cox Moorefield.
He was a member of Emmanuel Wesleyan Church, Poquoson Tribe No. 124, Improved Order of Red Men, and the Dan River Retiree's Club. Until his retirement in 1984, he was employed as a receiving clerk at Dan River Inc.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Jennifer M. Moorefield of Danville; and a sister, Carrie M. Taylor of Danville.
He was predeceased by a brother, James Thomas Moorefield.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from the chapel of Barker Funeral Home with the Rev. William Clark, the Rev. Jimmy Stone and the Rev. Kendall Jenkins officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Luther Neal
DANVILLE, Va. - Luther Allen "Jingo" Neal, 75, of 406 Overby St. died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several months of declining health.
Born June 8, 1923, in Caswell County N.C., he was the son of Luther and Lizzie Ware Neal.
He attended Caswell County schools and served for 19 years as a Merchant Marine and later as a security guard.
Survivors include a sister, Eunice N. Harrelson of Providence, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Clark officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
A private graveside service will be held Friday with the Rev. Ken Clark officiating.

DANVILLE, Va. - Judith Davis Strader, 51, of 1027 Lanier Ave., died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at her residence after a decline in health since March 1998.
Born Aug. 30, 1947, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of Reginald Davis and Evelyn Bates Bowes.
She was married
to Dennis G. Strader, Sr., who predeceased her in 1975.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she worked in the sewing room at Dan River, Inc., before retiring. She was a member of Freedom Baptist Church.
Survivors include her mother of Danville and her father of Lynchburg; one son, Dennis G. Strader, Jr. of Danville; two brothers, Donald Davis and Reginald Davis, Jr. both of Axton; and two sisters, Shirley Price of Danville, and Brenda Strong of Helena, Mont.
A funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Hall officiating. Burial will be Danville Memorial Gardens.
