Judith Strader
DANVILLE, Va. - Judith Davis Strader, 51, of 1027 Lanier Ave., died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at her residence after a decline in health since March 1998.
Born Aug. 30, 1947, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of Reginald Davis and Evelyn Bates Bowes, who survive.
She was married
to Dennis G. Strader Sr., who predeceased her in 1975.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she worked in the sewing room at Dan River Inc. before retiring. She was a member of Freedom Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother of Danville and her father of Lynchburg, survivors include one son, Dennis G. Strader Jr. of Danville; two brothers, Donald Davis and Reginald Davis Jr., both of Axton; and two sisters, Shirley Price of Danville and Brenda Strong of Helena, Mont.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Hall officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Corinne White
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Corinne Perry White, 93, formerly of Keeling, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999.
Born Aug. 2, 1905, in Richmond, she was the daughter of James and Minnie Nash Perry.
She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Keeling.
She was married
to Admiral D. White, who predeceased her.
She also was predeceased by two sisters, Marie Boyd and Dorothy Forbes, both of the Danville area.
A funeral will be held at noon Tuesday at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Boulevard Chapel, Portsmouth, with the Rev. Phillip Woods officiating. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park in Danville.
Richard Clark
VINTON, Va. - Richard Wallace "Dick" Clark, 48, of Vinton and formerly of Buena Vista, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999.
Born Feb. 19, 1950, in Lexington, he was the son of Fred H. Clark and Isabelle T. Clark Robertson of Swoope, who survives.
He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and Woodmen of the World. He was employed as a beauty supply sales consultant for Bruton and Company, L.P. of Charlottesville.
In addition to his mother, survivors include one daughter, Amy T. Clark of Vinton and her mother Elizabeth Hager; and two brothers, William M. "Bill" Clark of Buena Vista and Lester J. Clark of Lexington.
He was predeceased by his stepfather, Robert Robertson.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Art Brumit officiating. Burial will be in Rockbridge Memorial Gardens.
Viola Geier
EASLEY, S.C. - Viola Oakes Geier, 88, of 102 Summer Hill Court, died Monday morning, Jan. 18, 1999, at Laurel Hill Nursing Home, Pickens.
Born Oct. 15, 1910, in Henry County, Va., she was the daughter of Henry Austin Oakes and Lou Emma Reynolds Oakes.
She was an elementary school teacher until her retirement. She was a member of County Line Christian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Priscilla Munson of Easley and Catherine G. Hastay of Mount Pleasant; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert C. Royal officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Melvin Haley
DANVILLE, Va. - Melvin Henry Haley, of 3578 Chandler's Mill Road, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was married
to Daphne B. Haley, who survives.
Born in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Haley of Yanceyville, N.C.
He was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church. He was retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and was co-owner of Daphne's Adult Care in Reidsville, N.C.
In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include three sons, Stanley Kirk Haley of Macon, Ga., Kendall B. Haley of Winston Salem, N.C., and wife Katrina, and Kevin Gwynn of Raleigh, N.C., and wife Tiffiany; one godson, Malcolm Cummings of Reidsville, N.C.; four brothers, James Haley and his wife Nellie, John Haley and his wife Lunia, and Earl Haley, all of Pelham, N.C., and Charlie Haley and his wife Mae of Danville; two sisters, Carolyn Haley of N.Y., and Minnie Williamson and her husband Jerry of Pelham, N.C.; and three grandchildren, India Haley, Tavaris Haley and Kirk Haley Jr.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Shockoe Baptist Church, Java, with the Rev. George H. Pass officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Nellie Irwin
DANVILLE, Va. - Nellie Mary Wehry Irwin, 89, formerly of 120 Old Piney Forest Road, lot 23, died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 17, 1999, at Piney Forest Healthcare Center where she had resided since November.
Born June 29, 1909, in Danville, she was the daughter of James A. Wehry and Martha Mills Wehry.
She was married
to James A. Irwin, who predeceased her Dec. 16, 1989. She spent most of her life in Danville where she worked at Danville Knitting Mills for 21 years before retiring. She was a member of Mosley Memorial United Methodist Church and the Ladies Circle No. 1 of the church.
Survivors include one sister, Florence Elizabeth Moss of Danville; one stepbrother, Harold Reynolds of Danville; two nieces, Linda F. Crumpton and Martha L. Darnell, both of Danville; and other nieces and nephews.
She was also predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Lorrine Adkins.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Woodrow Giles officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.The family will receive friends at the residence of her niece, Linda F. Crumpton, at 215 Vicar Place.
Ollie Jackson
DANVILLE, Va. - Ollie Thurman Jackson, 76, of 124 Tolliver Place, died Monday morning, Jan. 18, 1999, at Piney Forest Healthcare Center, where he resided since December 1998. He had been in declining health for two months.
Born Aug. 20, 1922, in Danville, he was the son of Furman D. Jackson and Bessie Mishoe Jackson.
He was married
to Venice Lynch Jackson, who died Oct. 30, 1996. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Italy during World War II.
He spent most of his life in Danville where he was a self-employed mechanic and truck driver. He attended Schoolfield Baptist Church and was a member of the Poquoson Tribe No. 124 Improved Order of Red Men.
Survivors include one sister, Frances Jackson Mise of Danville.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Daivd Turbyfill officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of his nephew, 135 Bent Creek Road.
Sallie Miller
SCOTTSBURG, Va. - Sallie McKinney Miller, 100, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at The Woodview.
Born Sept. 26, 1898, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of William McKinney and Lucy Ann Cumbie McKinney.
She was married
to Clarence Cable Miller. She was a member of Fork Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Miller Richmond and Nell Miller Meyers, both of Richmond, and Annie Miller Bowers of Baskerville; two sons, John Randolph Miller of Chester and Billy Wesley Miller of South Boston; 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Berkley Miller, Lonnie Miller and Willie Lee Miller; and one daughter, Martha Miller.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Fork Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Michael Phillips officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday and from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home in South Boston.
Lois Motley
DANVILLE, Va. - Lois Millner Motley, 87, formerly of 330 Winston Circle, died Sunday afternoon Jan. 17, 1999, at Piney Forest Healthcare Center where she had resided for one year.
Born July 29, 1911, in Chesterfield, S.C., she was the daughter of Fred Lee Millner and Mary Perkins Millner.
She was married
to Merrill Motley in 1929, who predeceased her Sept. 28, 1987.
She had made her home in Danville since the age of seven, and she worked at Dan River Inc. for 43 years. She also was a member of Shermont Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Mildred Shumate Harvey of Danville and Jewell Millner Collie of Boca Raton, Fla.; and one brother, Llewellyn Millner of Danville.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Soyars officiating. Burial will be at Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her sister, Mildred Harvey, at 124 Park Ave.
Luther Powell
HALIFAX, Va. - Luther James Powell, 3057 North Terry's Bridge Road, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born May 29, 1910, in Halifax County, he was the son of George Cleveland Powell and Eva Bliss Powell.
He was married
to Martha Hackney Powell, who survives.
He was a member of Dan River Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and usher.
In addition to his wife of Halifax, survivors include two daughters, Peggy L. Powell of Rockville, Md., and Patsy P. Weaver of Rickville, Md.; four sons, Glen Powell, Donnie Powell and Mark Powell, all of Halifax, and James Powell of Fordland; eight sisters, Vena Watts of Richmond, Pauline Hancock and Dorothy Lacks, both of Halifax, Lanier Canada, Elsie Owen and Margaret Canada, all of South Boston, Lillian Smith and Mary Lee Smith, both of Scottsburg; one brother, Calvin (Runt) Powell of South Boston; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by one sister, Hallie P. Hackney; and three brothers, Wilson Powell, Joe Powell and Alton Powell.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Dan River Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Brewer, the Rev. Jack Stewart and the Rev. Dr. Dennis Knight officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
