Sallie Still
DANVILLE, Va. - Sallie Hunt Still, 85, of 2202 Halifax Road, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at her home.
Born Dec. 21, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Preston Hunt and Ella Johnson Hunt.
She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church.
She was married
to Sonny Still.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Young of Lithonia, Ga.; her sister, Lillie H. Miller of Alexandria.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday from L.H. Brooks & Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Howard Graves officiating.
There will be a private burial.
Jackie Bruce
DRY FORK, Va. - Jackie V. Bruce, 70, of 700 Harper Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 25, 1928, in Concord, N.C., she was the daughter of Jesse H. Starnes and Juanita Starnes Beavers.
She was a member of Full Gospel Fellowship Church and worked as a sitter for Community Sitting Service.
Survivors include three sons, Don Bruce and Mike Bruce, both of Dry Fork, and Jerry Bruce of Flint, Mich. a sister, Margaret Brown of Kannapolis, N.C.; two brothers, Jesse Starnes of Flint and Donald Starnes of Richmond; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from the chapel of Barker Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Ewing officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times will be at the residence.
Mildred Cothran
DENVER, Colo. - Mildred Farthing Cothran, 68, of 720 South Pecos St., died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at Denver General Hospital after a year of declining health and after being hospitalized for a week.
Born July 7, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of John H. Farthing and Cora Burnett Farthing.
On Oct. 7, 1959, she was married
to Bruce Cothran, who survives.
In addition to her husband, of the residence, survivors include three sons, Ronnie, Jimmy and Ricky, all of Denver; a sister, Beulah F. Smith of Danville; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all of Denver.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy F. Scearce and Clara F. Merrill; five brothers, Gilbert Farthing, John "Mutt" Farthing Jr., Herbert Farthing, Joe Farthing and Clyde Farthing.
A funeral will be held Thursday in Denver.
Sidney Crowder
DANVILLE, Va. - Sidney George Crowder, 72, of 201 Wood Ave., died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, in Piney Forest Health Care Center. He had been in declining health since 1994 and in the center for three days.
Born March 17, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Edward Thomas Crowder and Fannie Isabelle Davis Crowder.
He was married
Feb. 3, 1947, to Ollie Opal Haynes Crowder, who survives.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had lived in Danville his entire life. He was employed by Dan River Inc. for many years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and usher. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 325.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Edward Lee Crowder and Cindy S. Crowder of Fort Myers, Fla.; one sister and brother-in-law, Lillie C. Arthur and Junior Arthur of Danville; one brother and sister-in-law, Clarence Major Crowder and Edna C. Crowder of Danville; and one grandaughter, Shannon L. Crowder of Fort Myers, Fla.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Donna C. Taylor; one sister, Eloise Crowder; and one brother, Malcomb James Crowder.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. David Turbyfill and the Rev. Dr. John H. LaRue officiating. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home chapel and at other times at the residence.
Viola Geier
EASLEY, S.C. - Viola Oakes Geier, 88, of 102 Summer Hill Court, died Monday morning, Jan. 18, 1999, at Laurel Hill Nursing Home, Pickens.
Born Oct. 15, 1910, in Henry County, Va., she was the daughter of Henry Austin Oakes and Lou Emma Reynolds Oakes.
She was an elementary school teacher until her retirement. She was a member of County Line Christian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Priscilla Munson of Easley and Catherine G. Hastay of Mount Pleasant; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert C. Royal officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Norman Glickman
Norman David Glickman, 81, of 134 Wimbush Place, died Monday night, Jan. 18, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 24, 1917, in Newark, N.J., he was the son of Rudolph Glickman and Sadie Mauer Glickman.
He was married
to Katherine Glickman, who survives.
He was a World War II veteran having served as captain in the U.S. Army. He was a graduate of Lehigh University. He was a retired home builder and sold real estate. He was past master mason and 5th District manager of AARP.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, James Glickman of Harrington Park, N.J.; two stepsons, Kenneth Davis of Parsippany, N.J., and Richard Davis of Haledon, N.J.; one stepdaughter, Karen Washburn of Danville; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Townes Funeral Home Chapel with Rabbi Edward Elkins officiating.
The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. today at the residence.
Ollie Jackson
DANVILLE, Va. - Ollie Thurman Jackson, 76, of 124 Tolliver Place, died Monday morning, Jan. 18, 1999, at Piney Forest Healthcare Center, where he resided since December 1998. He had been in declining health for two months.
Born Aug. 20, 1922, in Danville, he was the son of Furman D. Jackson and Bessie Mishoe Jackson.
He was married
to Venice Lynch Jackson, who died Oct. 30, 1996. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Italy during World War II.
He spent most of his life in Danville where he was a self-employed mechanic and truck driver. He attended Schoolfield Baptist Church and was a member of the Poquoson Tribe No. 124 Improved Order of Red Men.
Survivors include one sister, Frances Jackson Mise of Danville.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Turbyfill officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his nephew, 135 Bent Creek Road.
Clyde "Johnnie" Lawson
Clyde "Johnnie" Garland Lawson, 57, of Austell, Ga., died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at Wellspring Memorial Hospital in Cobb County, Ga.
Born Aug. 17, 1941, in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of William Lawson and Nora "Hooker" Lawson.
He was married
to Carol A. Lawson, who survives.
He served in the U.S. Army for three years at the start of his career. During the past 13 years, he served his fellow man as Deputy for the Cobb County Sheriff's Department in Ga.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Kenneth Lawson of Tucson, Ariz., Joseph Lawson of Lynchburg, Va. and Donald Lawson of Providence, N.C.; one step-son, Stephen Bryant of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister Lillian Page of Reidsville, N.C.; two brothers Blane Lawson of Sumter, S.C. and Buddy Lawson of Sanford, Fla.; three grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, W. Lloyd Lawson.
A funeral was held Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, at Roy Davis Funeral Home in Austell, Ga.
Herbert Marshall
FREEMONT, Calif. - Herbert Kenneth Marshall, 68, of 423 Anza St., died Monday morning, Jan. 18, 1999, after four years of declining health.
Born May 10, 1930, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Joseph C. Marshall and Harrie Reece Marshall.
He was married
to Margie Cook Marshall, who survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict. He spent most of his life in Pelham, N.C., and California. He was employed as a welder and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Kenneth Marshall and Jeff Marshall, both of California; two daughters, Doreen Marshall and Teresa Marshall, both of California; two brothers, Alvin Marshall and James Marshall, both of Pelham; one sister, Madelean Meeks of Pelham; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one sister, Bernice Lovelace.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Lively Stone Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Avery Marshall officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home.
Margaret Swicegood
DANVILLE, Va. - Margaret Arey Swicegood, 90, of Riverside Health Care Center, formerly of 116 Westmoreland Court, died early Tuesday morning, Jan. 19, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two months of declining health.
Born May 30, 1908, in Danville, she was the daughter of Ernest C. Arey and Martha Rose Fink Arey.
She spent most of her life in Danville and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She attended Mary Baldwin College and graduated from Averett College.
Survivors include one brother, Dr. D.L. Arey of Danville; and one sister, Loraine Arey Clarke of Danville.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jack Heinsohn officiating.
