Donald Wallace
DANVILLE, Va. - Donald Lewis Wallace, 73, of 2856 Westover Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at his residence after two years of declining health.
Born March 6, 1925, in Roanoke, he was the son of Ora Hebert Wallace and Ocie Ella Janney Wallace.
He was married
April 28, 1946, to Margaret Lovelace Wallace, who survives.
Mr. Wallace moved to the Danville area at the age of 17 and at the age of 18 was inducted in the U.S. Army and served in the European and Asiatic Pacific Theater of operation during World War II. He then made his home in the Westover community where, prior to his retirement, he owned and operated Westover Appliance and Lawn Mower Service.
He was a member of The VFW Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647 and was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Donald Dale Wallace of Pelham, N.C.; one daughter, Brenda Williams Erickson of Providence, N.C.; one sister, Patrica Froncek of Broadheadsville, Pa.; two brothers, Douglas Wallace of Harrisburg, Pa., and Alvin Wallace of Rocky Mount, N.C.; two grandsons, Donald Nathan Edward Wallace and Danny Williams II; one granddaughter, Michelle W. Gryder; and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Joel Wallace, Melvin Wallace, Ray Wallace and Jerry Wallace; and two sisters, Mildred Sheets and Thelma Pico.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Tim Nuckels and the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at the funeral home chapel and at other times at the residence.
Joseph Wood
Joseph Reed Wood, 40, of Newport News, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999.
Born March 19, 1958, in Baltimore, Md., he was the son of Jessie Reed and Lillie Reed of Baltimore.
In addition to his parents, survivors include his son, Deon Wood of Newport News; four sisters, Edith Easley of Halifax, Carolyn Thigpen, Jessie Long and Rosa Randolph, all of Baltimore; five brothers, Harvey, Louis, Lee, Allen and Jimmie Wood, all of Baltimore.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. today at St. Paul CME Church in Halifax with the Rev. George Brown officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body may be viewed one hour prior to the service.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, 2103 Meadsville Road, Nathalie.

William Abbott, Sr.
HALIFAX, Va. - William Alexander Abbott Sr., 77, of 3070 Howard P. Anderson Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Oct. 21, 1921, in Halifax County, Va., he was the son of John Robertson Abbott and Reba Walker Abbott.
He was married
to Odell Tune Abbott, who survives.
He was a member of the Winns Creek Baptist Church where he was a choir member, Sunday school teacher and deacon. He was a member of the Bethel Ruritan Club and the Halifax Sportsman's Club. He was a retired tobacconist with Liggett-Myers Tobacco Company for 26 years.
In addition to his wife of Halifax, survivors include two daughters Sara Abbott Bradshaw of Richmond and Rebecca Abbott Wagner of Danville; one son William "Bill" Alexander Abbott Jr., of Halifax; two half sisters Bessie Abbott Crafton and Edith Abbott Guthrie; and seven grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Winns Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Madison and the Rev. Richard Welch officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Jackie Bruce
DRY FORK, Va. - Jackie V. Bruce, 70, of 700 Harper Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 25, 1928, in Concord, N.C., she was the daughter of Jesse H. Starnes and Juanita Starnes Beavers.
She was a member of Full Gospel Fellowship Church and worked as a sitter for Community Sitting Service.
Survivors include three sons, Don Bruce and Mike Bruce, both of Dry Fork, and Jerry Bruce of Flint, Mich. a sister, Margaret Brown of Kannapolis, N.C.; two brothers, Jesse Starnes of Flint and Donald Starnes of Richmond; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from the chapel of Barker Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Ewing officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
Sidney Crowder
DANVILLE, Va. - Sidney George Crowder, 72, of 201 Wood Ave., died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, in Piney Forest Health Care Center. He had been in declining health since 1994 and in the center for three days.
Born March 17, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Edward Thomas Crowder and Fannie Isabelle Davis Crowder.
He was married
Feb. 3, 1947, to Ollie Opal Haynes Crowder, who survives.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had lived in Danville his entire life. He was employed by Dan River Inc. for many years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and usher. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 325.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Edward Lee Crowder and Cindy S. Crowder of Fort Myers, Fla.; one sister and brother-in-law, Lillie C. Arthur and Junior Arthur of Danville; one brother and sister-in-law, Clarence Major Crowder and Edna C. Crowder of Danville; and one grandaughter, Shannon L. Crowder of Fort Myers, Fla.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Donna C. Taylor; one sister, Elouise Crowder; and one brother, Malcolm James Crowder.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. David Turbyfill and the Rev. Dr. John H. LaRue officiating. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post No. 325.
Leonard Emerson
JAVA, Va. - Leonard Thomas Emerson, 68, of 2312 Riceville Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, after eight days in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 21, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Arthur Leonard Emerson and Nannie Abbott Emerson.
He was married
July 12, 1957, to Elizabeth Irby Emerson, who survives.
He was of the Baptist faith. He served on the Board of Directors for the 640 Resque Squad, and he was a previous member of the Riceville-Java Volunteer Fire Department. He lived most of his life in the Riceville Community of Pittsylvania County. Before residing in Riceville, he had lived in Chatham. He was owner and operator of Emerson Grocery in Riceville for 41 years. He was also a veteran, serving in the U.S Army during the Korean conflict.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters Lynn Emerson Matney and Scottie Emerson Lawrence, both of Danville; one sister Nettie E. Ozmar of Danville; and one granddaughter, Summer C. Crumpton of Danville, he is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Doug Emerson.
A graveside service will be held noon Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Joseph McKissick officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Viola Geier
EASLEY, S.C. - Viola Oakes Geier, 88, of 102 Summer Hill Court, died Monday morning, Jan. 18, 1999, at Laurel Hill Nursing Home, Pickens.
Born Oct. 15, 1910, in Henry County, Va., she was the daughter of Henry Austin Oakes and Lou Emma Reynolds Oakes.
She was an elementary school teacher until her retirement. She was a member of County Line Christian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Priscilla Munson of Easley and Catherine G. Hastay of Mount Pleasant; one brother, Landon Oakes of Dry Fork, Va.; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. today at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, Danville, Va., with the Rev. Robert C. Royal officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
Norman Glickman
DANVILLE, Va. - Norman David Glickman, 81, of 134 Wimbish Place, died Monday night, Jan. 18, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 24, 1917, in Newark, N.J., he was the son of Rudolph Glickman and Sadie Mauer Glickman.
He was married
to Katherine Glickman, who survives.
He was a World War II veteran having served as captain in the U.S. Army. He was a graduate of Lehigh University. He was a retired home builder and was a real estate broker. He was past master mason and 5th District manager of AARP.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, James Glickman of Harrington Park, N.J.; two stepsons, Kenneth Davis of Parsippany, N.J., and Richard Davis of Haledon, N.J.; one stepdaughter, Karen Washburn of Danville; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mary Lumpkin
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Ellen Lumpkin, 60, of 2543 Airview Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born Jan. 5, 1939, in the Glenwood Community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charlie Wilson and Ollie Wilson Wilson.
She was married
March 17, 1955, to Bernice Russell Lumpkin, who survives.
She had lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville where she was a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters Shelby Jeanette L. Wallace and Mary Susan L. Sharp, both of Danville; four sons, Jimmy R. Lumpkin of Ringgold, Thomas Blake Lumpkin and Howard Wade Lumpkin, both of Danville and Mark Wayne Lumpkin of Keeling; one brother Charlie L. Wilson of Baltimore, Md.; one sister Nancy W. Leonard of Lexington, N.C.; and 14 grandchildren.
