Herbert Marshall
FREEMONT, Calif. - Herbert Kenneth Marshall, 68, of 423 Anza St., died Monday morning, Jan. 18, 1999, after four years of declining health.
Born May 10, 1930, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Joseph C. Marshall and Harrie Reece Marshall.
He was married
to Margie Cook Marshall, who survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict. He spent most of his life in Pelham, N.C., and California. He was employed as a welder and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Kenneth Marshall and Jeff Marshall, both of California; two daughters, Doreen Marshall and Teresa Marshall, both of California; two brothers, Alvin Marshall and James Marshall, both of Pelham; one sister, Madelean Meeks of Pelham; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one sister, Bernice Lovelace.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Lively Stone Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Avery Marshall officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home.
Lena McMillan
AXTON, Va. - Lena Jones McMillan, 83, of 253 Daniel Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at Beverly Health Care, Martinsville.
Born Jan. 29, 1915, in Henry County, she was the daughter of Thomas P. Jones Sr. and Minnie Earles Jones.
She was married
to John Coleman McMillan, who survives.
She attended Axton Baptist Church. She and her husband operated McMillan Grocery for 25 years. She also worked as a sales clerk at Leggetts and was employed by Pannill Knitting.
In addition to her husband of Axton, survivors include two daughters Max "Dana" Glass of Danville, Nena M. "Tippy" Lovell of Martinsville; three grandchildren Elizabeth "Beth" Glass of Danville, Max Glass Jr. of Charlottesville and Pfc. Michael Lovell of Fort Hood, Texas.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at McKee-Stone Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Oscar Adams officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Wilson Orrell
WINDER, Ga. - Wilson K. Orrell, 74, of 189 Highland Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at Barrow Medical Center of an extended illness.
Born March 31, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of Jerry K. Orrell and Grace Walton Orrell.
He was married
to Laura H. Orrell, who survives.
He was a veteran of World War II. He was a deacon at Winder Worship Center and had lived in Winder, Ga., since 1973, moving there from Quincy, Fla.
In addition to his wife of Winder, Ga., survivors include one son Kenneth L. Orrell of Winder, Ga.; one daughter Phyllis K. Orrell of Topeka, Kan.; two brothers Durward L. Orrell, of Belmont, N.C. and Ronnie Orrell of Danville, Va.; one sister Jean Brown of Danville; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Wise-Connolly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eugene Pritchett and the Rev. Daryl Endenfield officiating. Burial will be in Winder Worship Center cemetery.

Edgar Payne
DANVILLE, Va. - Edgar Allen Payne, 80, of 5501 Franklin Turnpike, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, after 12 days at Danville Regional Medical Center and two years of declining health.
Born Feb. 12, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Nat Samuel Payne and Zula Thomas Payne.
He was first married
to Patsy Herndon Payne, who predeceased him March 8, 1957, and on May 16, 1959, he married
Mae Jones Payne, who survives.
Mr. Payne had lived in the Whitmell and Mount Hermon communities his entire life. He was employed by Dan River Mills, retiring in 1981. He was a charter member of North Main Baptist Church, serving on the board of deacons, as a Sunday school teacher and as a former member of the choir.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia P. Burton and Ted C. Burton of Dryfolk, Va; one step-son and step-daughter-in-law, James R. "Jimmy" Jefferson and Lorell W. Jefferson of Danville; one sister Zula Payne Carter of Danville; three grandchildren, Trudy B. Boyd, Terri Jefferson and Kelly Jefferson; and two great-grandchildren, Christopher Boyd and Colleen Boyd.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at North Main Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Eddie Davis, the Rev. Kyle Flora and the Rev. Ken Clark officiating. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at North Main Baptist Church and at other times at the residence.

Margaret Swicegood
DANVILLE, Va. - Margaret Arey Swicegood, 90, of Riverside Health Care Center, formerly of 116 Westmoreland Court, died early Tuesday morning, Jan. 19, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two months of declining health.
Born May 30, 1908, in Danville, she was the daughter of Ernest C. Arey and Martha Rose Fink Arey.
She spent most of her life in Danville and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She attended Mary Baldwin College and graduated from Averett College.
Survivors include one brother, Dr. D.L. Arey of Danville; and one sister, Loraine Arey Clarke of Danville.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. today at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jack Heinsohn officiating.

Donald Wallace
DANVILLE, Va. - Donald Lewis Wallace, 73, of 2856 Westover Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at his residence after two years of declining health.
Born March 6, 1925, in Roanoke, he was the son of Ora Herbert Wallace and Ocie Ella Janney Wallace.
He was married
April 28, 1946, to Margaret Lovelace Wallace, who survives.
Mr. Wallace moved to the Danville area at the age of 17 and at the age of 18 was inducted in the U.S. Army and served in the European and Asiatic Pacific Theater of operation during World War II. He then made his home in the Westover community where, prior to his retirement, he owned and operated Westover Appliance and Lawn Mower Service.
He was a member of The VFW Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647 and was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Donald Dale Wallace of Pelham, N.C.; one daughter, Brenda Williams Erickson of Providence, N.C.; one sister, Patrica Froncek of Broadheadsville, Pa.; two brothers, Douglas Wallace of Harrisburg, Pa., and Alvin Wallace of Rocky Mount, N.C.; two grandsons, Donald Nathan Edward Wallace and Danny Williams II; one granddaughter, Michelle W. Gryder; and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Joel Wallace, Melvin Wallace, Ray Wallace and Jerry Wallace; and two sisters, Mildred Sheets and Thelma Pico.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Tim Nuckels and the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Fort Lee Honor Guard. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
George "Bill" Astin
DANVILLE, Va. - George W. "Bill" Astin, 66, of 3516 Laniers Mill Road, died Thursday afternoon, Jan. 21, 1999, in the Veterans Administration hospital in Durham, N.C., after years of declining health.
Born Sept. 6, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of Claude Swanson Astin, Sr. and Lucile Harvey Astin, who survives.
He was married
June 1955 to Joyce Lee Nazworthy Astin of Schoolfield.
He graduated from Whitmell Farm Life School. He served in the United States Marines from 1952 to 1961 with the V.M.J. Parachute Division. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Sharpshooters Medal. He transferred to the United States Air Force in 1961, serving until 1966 as a specialized electronics technician with the government's Secret Service department for which he was awarded many commendations. He retired from the service and was employed as the Toyota parts department manager at Tamson Chevrolet. He retired due to medical reasons.
He was a member of Mount Olivet Methodist Church. He later became one of the founding members of Calvary Church of the Nazarene to assist in the building of the church, where he served on the chairman's board and Sunday school board. He later returned to Mount Olivet Methodist Church, where his membership is present. He was also an active member of the American Radio Relays League, Danville React, Bible Radio Fellowship Net under the calls of K04PG and AE4WG, the DAV Commanders Club, Virginia Blind Association, Supporter of the Missionaries of Wineclift and the Possum Net.
In addition to his mother of Mount Cross Road and wife of the residence, survivors include four daughters, Donna Astin Hawker of Ringgold, Lora Astin Knight of Cascade and Mari Astin Smith and Martha Astin Gilley, both of Danville; two brothers, Claude Swanson Astin, Jr., of Williamsport, Pa., and Michael S. Astin of Roanoke; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, Benjamin Harvey Astin.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Mount Olivet Methodist Church with the Rev. Wayne Crews and the Rev. Rick Withrow officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park with military honors conducted by the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.

Ira Dalton
GRETNA, Va. - Ira Lee Dalton, 92, of 2152 Paisley Road, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Aug. 18, 1906, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Albert Lee Dalton and Rose Dove Dalton.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Brenda Dalton.
Mr. Dalton was a retired farmer and of the Primitive Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of 69 years, Velma Brumfield Dalton of the residence, survivors include one son, Glenwood Dalton of Gretna; two daughters, Atha Bailey and Judy Dalton, both of Gretna; two sisters, Alice Dalton and Jennie Brumfield, both of Gretna; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, at Weatherford Primitive Baptist Church with the Elder Raymond Goad and the Elder Marvin Brumfield officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Buster Grimes
DANVILLE, Va. - Buster Lee Grimes, 85, of 32 Oak Ridge Ave., died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at the Danville Regional Medical Center after declining in health since October 1998 and a two-week stay in the hospital.
He was married
July 7, 1934, to Mamie Riley Grimes, who survives.
Born in Danville on May 21, 1913, he was the son of Frank W. Grimes and Dora Towler Grimes. He spent most of his life in Danville, where he worked for Dan River, Inc. for 35 years before retiring at the age of 65. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Betty Grimes Hilton of Danville; three sons, Harry L. Grimes of Yanceyville, N.C., Garland "Gene" Grimes of Axton, and Kenneth F. Grimes of Axton.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Paul Ray officiating.
