Dorothy James
DANVILLE, Va. - Dorothy Lorraine Wilson James, 66, of 614 Sunnyside Ave., died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two weeks of declining health.
Born May 19, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of Samuel Edward Wilson and Mary Lou Adkins Wilson Power.
She was of the Baptist faith. She lived her entire life in Danville. She was retired from Dan River Mills, where she worked as a weaver.
Survivors include one daughter, Tammy G. Foster of Danville; one son, Bobby W. Wilson of Houston, Texas; three brothers, Edward Wilson, Jerry Wilson and Melvin Wilson, all of Danville; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home chapel and at other times at 138 Parsons St.
Frank Jones
DANVILLE, Va. - Frank Edward Jones, 89, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 20, 1909, in Johnson City, Tenn., he was the son of Henry Gilbert Jones and Delia Loudy Jones.
He was married
to Minnie M. Jones, who predeceased him.
He was a farmer and logger. He retired from Dan River Inc. with 25 years of service and was a guard at Danville Community College.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Mary Jones Hodges Guess.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Moody Funeral Home Chapel, Stuart, N.C., with the Rev. Gerald Melton officiating. Burial will be in the Morrison Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to service at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Ruth Salmons of Danville.
Leslie Mills
ROANOKE, Va. - Leslie Wayne Mills, 67, of 4550 Shenandoah Avenue, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at Salem Medical Center.
Born Sept. 30, 1931, in Danville, he was the son of John Robert Mills and Clara Haynes Mills.
He was married
to Ethel Bradner Mills, who predeceased him on Oct. 1, 1996.
He was a member of North Main Baptist Church. He worked as an electrician for Dan River Inc. and served in the United States Navy.
Survivors include one daughter, Janette M. Baradell of Chatham; one sister, Elsie M. Solomon of Portsmouth; and one grandchild.
He was predeceased by one sister, Ocie M. Kendricks, and one brother, Lacy Mills.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. today at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Kyle Flora officiating. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, 652 Haymes Lane, Chatham.
Phillip Scott
DANVILLE, Va. - Phillip Scott, 74, of 433 Richmond Ave., died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
He was born July 22, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, Va.
He was married
Dec. 4, 1943, to Cora Mae Carter, who survives.
He received his education in the Pittsylvania County School System. He was a member of Bethlehem Temple Holiness Church. He was employed by Jesse Jones Sausage Company in Danville for more than thirty years. He retired from Roman Eagle Nursing Home after many years of service.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Phillip Wendell Scott of Danville, Randy C. Scott of Greensboro, N.C.; two daughters, Rachel Scott Williamson and Nita Scott Claiborne, both of Danville; one brother, Elder Matthew Scott of Danville; one sister, Thelma S. Vaden of Danville; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Bishop Major Hairston officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Robert H. "Bob" Spencer
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert H. Spencer, 75, of 515 West Main St., died Friday morning, Jan. 22, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after one month of declining health.
Born March 27, 1923, in Norfolk, he was the son of William David Spencer and Edna Louise Ward.
He was married
to Nell Sanford Spencer, who survives.
He served in the United States Army during World War II. He spent most of his life in Danville where he was a funeral director for Swicegood Funeral Home for 53 years and served as vice president and secretary of the board.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Morotock Lodge No. 210 A.F. and A.M. and the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, and the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325, and the Baptist Tabernacle.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Kathryn S. Murphy of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; one son, Robert H. Spencer Jr., of Berkeley, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Dr. Laura R. Thompson of Columbia, S.C.; one stepson, Leon S. Thompson of Danville; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr., officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Geames Thompson
DANVILLE, Va. - Geames Garnett Thompson, 80, of 150 Bernard Court, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at the residence.
Born in Pittsylvania County on Sept. 18, 1918, he was the son of Moses Thompson and Mary Inman Thompson. He was a member of Strawberry Primitive Baptist Church. He was employed as a correctional officer for the City of Danville until his retirement in 1980 and also lived most of his life in the Danville area. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
On Feb. 11, 1960, he was married
to Myrtle Murphy Thompson, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by one son, Garnett Neal Thompson of Mount Hermon; two daughters, Linda T. Reid of Burlington, N.C., and Ann T. Knight of Danville; seven sisters, Vergie T. Mize, Geneva T. Fowler, Mary T. Nance, Doris T. Bailey, Sara T. Horsley, Jean T. Cook and Clara T. Swift, all of Danville; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brother, Wallace Thompson.
A funeral will be held at the graveside 1 p.m. today at Danville Memorial Gardens with Elder Thomas Solomon and the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Sallie Wright
DANVILLE, Va. - Sallie Lou Williamson Wright, formerly of 111 Grace St., died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, in Greater South East Community Hospital, Washington, D.C. after fifteen days of serious illness.
Born Sept. 9, 1916, in Blanch, N.C., she was the daughter of Dora Lea Williamson and Lulie Williamson.
She was married
to James Alfred Wright, who predeceased her.
At an early age, she joined the Hamer Missionary Baptist Church, in Blanch, N.C., and later joined the Shiloh Baptist Church in Danville. She received her basic education from the Caswell County School System.
Survivors include one son, Joe Louis "Ocie" Wright of Washington. D.C.; one sister, Elizabeth Williamson Foster; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. today at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hill Memory Gardens.

William Dickerson
AMHERST, Va. - William Henry Dickerson, 84, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born April 23, 1914, in Rockingham County, N.C., he was the son of Alexandra Dickerson and Mattie Cox Dickerson.
He was married
to Annie Matkins Dickerson, who survives.
He was a retired farmer.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, William Melvin Dickerson of Tuscon, Ariz.; two daughters, Hazel Margaret Schoolfield and Jeannette Catherine Revis, both of Reidsville, N.C.; one stepson, Kenneth Dickerson of Amherst; one stepdaughter, Agnes Dickerson of Danville; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three sisters, Lillian Layne, Della Bolton Ross and Irene Edwards; and two brothers, Vester Dickerson and Wesley Dickerson.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Whitten Monelison Chapel.
Howard Fuller
ROANOKE, Va. - Howard Thomas Fuller Sr., 76, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, at The Veteran's Administration Medical Center, Salem.
He was retired from the Norfork and Southern Railroad and served in the U.S. Coast Guard.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Laureen Fuller of Union Hall; his father, Thomas C. Fuller; four brothers; two sisters; and three grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held today, Jan. 29, 1999, at noon at Mountain View cemetery in Vinton by the Rev. Carter Sloan.
Friends may call at the home of Tom and Laureen Fuller, 242 Beech Drive, Union Hall, Va.
Arrangements are being handled by The Lotz Roanoke Chapel, Franklin Road, Roanoke.
Loretta Griffith
CASCADE, Va. - Loretta Joann Zmuda Griffith, 60, of 14800 Martinsville Highway, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, N.C. She had been in declining health for three months and in the hospital for a month.
Born Jan. 11, 1939, in Buffalo, N.Y., she was the daughter of Joseph Zmuda and Florence G. Zmuda.
She was formerly married
to Billy Griffith of Sanford, N.C.
She was of the Catholic faith. She lived most of her life in Pittsylvania County. She worked for Revco-CVS as a cashier in Martinsville.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty G. Carter of Danville and Mary G. Ford of Orlando, Fla.; three sisters, Patricia Z. Bishop of Depew, N.Y., Teresa Z. Zaehringer of Muscatine, Iowa, and Irene Z. Wawro of Lock-Port, N.Y.; one brother, Joseph Zmuda of Clearwater, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. today at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. John Meadows officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Betty Carter, 7028 Lakeview Terrace, Danville.
