Cory Preston
DRY FORK, Va. - Cory Kenta Preston, 21, of 2653 Sunset Drive, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Born July 7, 1977, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Ronnie Preston of Martinsville and Brenda Harris Preston of Dry Fork.
In addition to his parents, survivors include two sisters, Tiffany Strait of Danville and Latoya Preston of Dry Fork; a brother, Byron Preston of Martinsville; and his grandmother, Annie Harris.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Harold Van officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
James Wiles
DANVILLE, Va. - James "Jimmy" Wiles, 48, of 29 Glen Oake Drive, died Monday morning, Jan. 25, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 21, 1951, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Hugh H. Wiles and Cora Ellen Helton Wiles.
He was a graduate of Dan River High School and Danville Community College. He had spent most of his life in Danville where he worked at Dan River Inc. for 25 years before retiring on disability in September 1998.
He was a member of Swansonville United Methodist Church and attended the Church of The Brethren on Glen Oak Drive.
Survivors include one daughter, Jodi Mae Wiles of Dry Fork; one brother, Melvin S. Wiles of Ringgold; and four half-brothers, Sam Helton, Bobby Helton, Raymond Helton and Jack Helton, all of Martinsville; two sisters, Jane Wiles Clem of Calabash, N.C., and Katherine Wiles Buckner of Alton.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dale F. Watson and the Rev. Mike Wiles officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Frances Allen
EASTVILLE, Va. - Frances Taylor Allen, 85, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, in Washington, D.C.
Born Oct. 7, 1914, in Ringgold, she was the daughter of Samuel M. Taylor and Eva Pittard Taylor.
She was married
to Dr. James C. Allen, who predeceased her.
She graduated from Mercy Douglas Hospital School of Nursing. She was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, Eastville, and organist.
Survivors include one daughter, Cleo A. Peaker of Eastville; four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held noon Thursday at Bethel A.M.E. Church. Burial will be in family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Gray's Funeral Home, 625 Madison Ave., Eastville.
Lucy Arrington
DANVILLE, Va. - Lucy Maude Holcomb Arrington, 98, of 3332 Westover Drive, formerly of the Oak Level community, died of natural causes Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born July 7, 1900, in Rocky Mount, she was the daughter of John Holcomb and Nancy Ellen Holcomb.
She was married
to John Arrington, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Providence Baptist Church in the Oak Level community and was a housewife.
Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Ethelene Mason Taylor of Danville; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by one son, William Mason.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel in Martinsville with the Rev. Larry Taylor and Pastor Dwaine Blevins officiating. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mary Bane
VERNON HILL, Va. - Mary Arlene Hill Bane, 83, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, at her home.
Born Dec. 9, 1915, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of John William Hill and Gillie Wyatt Hill.
She was married
to Lacy W. Bane, who survives.
She was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, and she was postmistress of the Vernon Hill Post Office for 31 years. She was also a teacher in the Halifax County Public School System.
In addition to her husband of Vernon Hill, survivors include one daughter, Mary Thomas Bane of Rocky Mount; one sister, Alice Pruitt of Brookneal; two brothers, Samuel T. Hill of Volens and Roy Edward Hill of Republican Grove.
She was predeceased by one son, John Jenkins Bane.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. today at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Wilkins officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at her home in Vernon Hill.

Herbert Edmunds
SUTHERLIN, Va. - Herbert Lacy Edmunds, 80, of 1083 Davmunds Trail, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, in Halifax Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 18, 1919, in Halifax County, he was the son of Hunter Edmunds Sr. and Gracie Ferrell Edmunds.
He was married
to the former Patsy Chaney, who survives.
He was a member of Pleasant Chapel Baptist Church, and was retired from Dan River Inc.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a stepdaughter, Ethel Terrell of Danville; one brother, Hunter Edmunds Jr. of Newport News; and three sisters, Edith King of Bronx, N.Y., and Sallie Andrews and Diana Edmunds, both of Landover, Md.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at White Oak Baptist Church, in Sutherlin, with the Rev. John W. Howard and the Rev. Floyd Standfield officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the church.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Aurelia Johnson
DANVILLE, Va. - Aurelia Benton Johnson, 72, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999.
Born in Danville, she was a daughter of Robert Anthony Benton and Blanche Kerns Benton. She was married
in 1952 to the Rev. Gordon Johnson, who survives.
She was a graduate of George Washington High School, and attended Averett College and graduated from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J. She served as organist for Mount Vernon Baptist Church and Brandt Memorial Presbyterian Church, St. Louis, Mo.
In addition to her husband, survivors include one son, Brian Johnson; one daughter, Donna Hedrick; and four grandchildren.
A private service was held Tuesday at Jefferson Barracks National cemetery in St. Louis.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Brandt Memorial Presbyterian Church, St. Louis.
Mary McDowell
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Mary Adams Newbill McDowell, 91, of 1407 Peach Ave., died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Feb. 8, 1907, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of James Samuel Newbill and Ella Hudson Newbill.
She was married
to Carter Glass McDowell, and was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include one niece, Mary Ann Newbill Carlton of Farmville; three nephews, L.A. Newbill and C.C. Newbill, both of Guatamala City, Central America, and H.H. "Skip" Newbill Jr. of Suffolk.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Oak Ridge cemetery with the Rev. Bob Fox and the Rev. Tony Brooks officiating.

Iva Shelton
GRETNA, Va. - Iva Hines Shelton, 74, of 24232 U.S. Highway 29, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 14, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Arthur Hines and Mollie Johnson Hines.
Mrs. Shelton was a member, deaconess, and a former Sunday school teacher of Gretna Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was a retired employee of Dan River Inc. She was predeceased by a sister, Gladys Dalton and two brothers, Jesse Hines and Emmitt Hines.
She is survived by her husband Odie H. Shelton Sr., of Gretna; a son and daughter-in-law, Odie and Kay Shelton Jr. of Dry Fork; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Carlton Rowland of Danville; two sisters, Madeline Huffman and Thelma McBride, both of Gretna; five grandchildren, Christy Shelton and her husband Donald Shelton of Hurt, Jill Rowland of Greensboro, N.C., Carla Rowland of Danville, Stephanie Shelton of Blacksburg, and Adam Shelton of Dry Fork; and one great-grandson, Austin Shelton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at Gretna Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Barry Crumpton officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7-8 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 24232 US Highway 29, Gretna.
