Frances Sisco

RICHMOND, Va. - Frances Dodson Sisco, 63, of 209 Laural Park Drive, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, at her home.

Born Sept. 30, 1935, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Lewis Moore Dodson, who predeceased her, and Alice D. Dodson, who survives.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Richmond.

She is survived by her mother of Turbeville.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. today at First Cross Roads Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Ken Williams officiating.

Powell Funeral Home in South Boston is in charge of arrangements.

Barbara Ward

RICHMOND, Va. - Barbara Pointer Ward, 51, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999.

She was the daughter of Mildred Chandler Pointer, who survives.

She was married to James E. Ward, who survives.

In addition to her mother of Semora, N.C. and husband, survivors include one son, Brad Ward; one daughter, Allison Merritt Ward; one sister, Luna Pointer Hollett of Birmingham, Ala.; and one brother, William Pointer of Semora, N.C.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Brandermill Church, 4500 Millridge Pkwy., Midlothian. Burial will be in Hollywood cemetery, Richmond.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Bliley Funeral Home Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., Richmond.

Milton Arnold

ROANOKE, Va. - Milton H. "Pete" Arnold, 102, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999.

He was the widower of Lillian Edith Arnold.

He is survived by his children, the Rev. Gene and Elizabeth Arnold of Vinton, Maynard and Mary Arnold of Ridgeway, Robert Arnold and Edna Arnold of Danville; and Janie J. Jones of Roanoke; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted noon, Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, at Lotz Roanoke Chapel with the Rev. Bob Barber and the Rev. Mike Ward officiating. Interment icon will follow in Henry Memorial Park, Henry County.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today and Friday at the funeral home.

Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Andrew Clay Jr.

HAMPTON, Va. - Andrew J. Clay Jr., 72, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999.

He was a native of Altavista and had been a Peninsula resident since 1952.

He was married to Jewell Clay, who survives.

He was a U.S. Army veteran with eight years of service. He was self-employed in the carpet business for 32 years. He was also a former member of the Church of Christ.

In addition to his wife of 49 years, survivors include two daughters, Sandra Gardner and Sonya Clay, both of Hampton; one brother, Walter Clay of Norfolk; two sisters, Jeneva Bennett and Rosebelle Kidd, both of Altavista; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 7 p.m today at Peninsula Funeral Home. The family will receive friends after the service until 8:30 p.m.

Burial will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Altavista Memorial Park in Altavista.

Howard Fuller

ROANOKE, Va. - Howard Thomas Fuller Sr., 76, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, at The Veteran's Administration Medical Center, Salem.

He was retired from the Norfork and Southern Railroad and served in the U.S. Coast Guard.

He is survived by his son and daugher-in-law, Tom and Laureen Fuller of Union Hall; his father, Thomas C. Fuller; four brothers; two sisters; and three grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at noon at Mountain View cemetery in Vinton by the Rev. Carter Sloan.

Friends may call today at the home of Tom and Laureen Fuller, 242 Beech Drive, Union Hall, Va.

Arrangements are being handled by The Lotz Roanoke Chapel, Franklin Road, Roanoke.

Grayzelle Giles

VIRGILINA, Va. - Grayzelle Downey Hudson Giles, 84, of 1046 South Nichols Ferry Road, died Tueday, Jan 26, 1999, at University Park Nursing Home, Richmond.

Born June 22, 1914, in Granville County, N.C., she was the daugther of Thomas Calvin Downey and Beatrice Willard Downey.

She was predecased by two husbands, Charlie J. Hudson Sr. and Edwin C. Giles.

She was a member of Parham Road Baptist Church in Richmond and she was a longtime member of Grace Baptist Church at Omega. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include one daughter, Faye H. Elliott of Richmond; and one son, C. Jordan Hudson Jr. of Richmond; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Grace Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery in Virgilina.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Brooks Funeral Home in South Boston and at other times at the residence.

Loretta Griffith

CASCADE, Va. - Loretta Joann Zmuda Griffith, 60, of 14800 Martinsville Highway, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, N.C. She had been in declining health for three months and in the hospital for a month.

Born Jan. 11, 1939, in Buffalo, N.Y., she was the daughter of Joseph Zmuda and Florence G. Zmuda.

She was formerly married to Billy Griffith of Sanford, N.C.

She was of the Catholic faith. She lived most of her life in Pittsylvania County. She worked for Revco-CVS as a cashier in Martinsville.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty G. Carter of Danville and Mary G. Ford of Orlando, Fla.; three sisters, Patricia Z. Bishop of Depew, N.Y., Teresa Z. Zaehringer of Muscatine, Iowa, and Irene Z. Wawro of Lock-Port, N.Y.; one brother, Joseph Zmuda of Clearwater, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. John Meadows officiating.

The family will receieve friends at the residence of her daughter, Betty Carter, 7028 Lakeview Terrace, Danville.

Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Harris

CHATHAM, Va. - Helen Morris Harris, 88, of 225 South Main St., died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at Bethany Health Plex, Richmond.

Born Dec. 15, 1910, in Martinsville, Va., she was the daughter of Patrick Thomas Morris and Elizabeth Mary Smithson Morris.

She was married to Gerald Chester Harris, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Chatham Presbyterian Church. She was a retired nurse and retired owner of the Chatham Jewelry Store. She was a member of the Chatham D.A.R.

Survivors include one sister, Elizabeth M. Grizzard of Emporia; three brothers, Dick Morris and Tom Morris, both of Martinsville, and Bob W. Morris of Columbus, Wis.; four sisters-in-law, Excie Morris of Martinsville, Ruth Morris of Columbus, Wis., Virginia Morris of Fort Worth, Texas, and Esther Morris of Martinsville; one brother-in-law, David Harris of Colonial Heights; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Chatham Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Walker Pettyjohn officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery, Martinsville.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Scott Funeral Home in Chatham.

Aurelia Johnson

DANVILLE, Va. - Aurelia Benton Johnson, 72, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999.

Born in Danville, she was a daughter of Robert Anthony Benton and Blanche Kerns Benton.

She was married in 1952 to the Rev. Gordon Johnson, who survives.

She was a graduate of George Washington High School, and attended Averett College and graduated from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J. She served as organist for Mount Vernon United Methodist Church in Danville, and Brandt Memorial Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, Mo.

In addition to her husband, survivors include one son, Brian Johnson; one daughter, Donna Hedrick; and four grandchildren.

A private service was held Tuesday at Jefferson Barracks National cemetery in St. Louis.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Brandt Memorial Presbyterian Church, St. Louis.

Ollie Roach

MANASSAS, Va. - Ollie Louise Hudgins Roach, 91, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at Prince William Hospital.

She was past-president of the Annual Conference Minister's Wives Association, Director of Music and house mother at Methodist Children's Home in Richmond, past-president of the Women's Club in Farmville. She was a graduate of Ferrum College and in 1978, she received Distinguished Alumni Award.

Survivors include one daughter, Marianne R. Martin of Manassas; one son, Arthur H. Roach of Arlington; one sister, Annie Fields of Danville; one brother, John I. Hudgins of Danville; and three grandchildren.

A funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. John T. Martin Jr. officiating. Burial will be 1 p.m. Monday at Mountain View cemetery, Danville.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to funeral service at the church.

Price Funeral Home, Manassas, is in charge of arrangements.

Flossie Stewart

DANVILLE, Va. - Flossie Lean Pruitt Stewart, 84, of 1467 Myrtle Ave., Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 20, 1915, in Danville, she was the daughter of John James Pruitt and Elsie Emerson Pruitt.

She married William Aubrey Stewart, who predeceased her.

She was of the Baptist faith, and a lover and writer of poetry. She worked at Dan River Inc., 8A Dress, for 43 years.

Survivors include one son, W. Albert Stewart of San Francisco; seven daughters, Anne M. Witt, E. Elaine Harper, Gloria J. Hayes, and Diane Williams, all of Danville, Delores J. Briggs of Bayboro, N.C., Joan M. Gray of Ringgold, and Patricia E. Burke of Keeling; one brother, Harry L. Pruitt of Danville; 24 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sisters, Doris Lewis and Ruth H. Pruitt.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Julian Thompson

DANVILLE, Va. - Julian Wentworth Thompson, 75, of Spring Garden Community died Tuesday, December 28, 1999, at his home.

Julian was born January 26, 1924, in Pittsylvania County. He was the son of Henry Wilson Thompson and Florence Conway Thompson.

Mr. Thompson graduated from Spring Garden High School and worked for Virginia ABC Board for over 40 years, in various locations throughout the state. He retired in 1988, from the Nor Dan Store in Danville. He was an active member of the American Legion Post # 325. Mr. Thompson was a lifetime member of the Spring Garden Presbyterian Church, where he had served as a deacon. He served during World War II in the United States Army, 110th Field Artillery of the 29th Division. He landed on Normandy on D-Day and served throughout the remainder of the war as a member of the artillery observation team attached to the 115th Infantry.

Julian is survived by his wife, Helen Davis Thompson; a son, Van W. Thompson and wife, Charlene of Hillsborough, NC; a son, Bryon W. Thompson and wife, Kim of Roanoke; a daughter, Lisa T. Younger and husband, Lee of Midlothian; two sisters, Frances T. Love of Raleigh, NC, and Helen T. Hutchinson of Chapel Hill, NC; two granddaughters; one grandson; two step granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Charlotte C. Thompson and brother, Paige W. Thompson.

A funeral will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 31, 1999, at Spring Garden Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Paul Johnson and the Reverend R.J. Barber, Jr. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post #325. Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

The family received friends at the residence in Spring Garden.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Hospice Support Services, Inc., P.O. Box 2713, Danville, VA, 24543 or to the charity of your choice.
