Pauline Tate
DANVILLE, Va. - Pauline Graham Tate, 87, of 2526 North Main St., died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home where she had been a resident for 21 years.
Born Feb. 10, 1911, in Monroe, Ga., she was the son of George Washington Graham and Tinia Butler Graham.
She was married
March 31, 1934, to Elmo Swanson Tate, who died Jan. 22, 1998.
Mrs. Tate moved to Danville in 1933, then lived in Kibler Valley, and a number of Tennessee communities before moving to South Hill in 1952. She returned to Danville in 1977. She was a member of the South Hill United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Tate McFall of Danville; one son-in-law, F. Lawrence McFall of Danville; one brother, Larry L. Graham of Merietta, Ga.; two granddaughters, Jean M. McClanahan and Carol M. Slaughter, both of Danville; and four great-grandchildren, Crystal McClanahan, Daniel McClanahan, Elizabeth Slaughter and Edward Slaughter, all of Danville.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Daryl S. Joyce officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, 610 Greenwich Circle.

Jack Carter Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Jack David Carter Sr., 74, of 108 North Woodberry Ave., died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three months of declining health.
Born July 15, 1924, in Blairs, he was a son of Claude Lee Carter Sr. and Jessie Gibbs Carter.
He was married
to Louise Turner Carter on May 10, 1945.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and served on the USS Yorktown. He lived his entire life in Danville and was of the Baptist faith. He was retired from Hunter Oil Co. where he worked as a maintenance specialist.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Jerry David Carter and J.D. Carter Jr., both of Danville; two daughters, Linda C. DeHart of Danville and Elaine C. Shevos of Raleigh, N.C.; two sisters, Thelma C. Turner of Roanoke and Ernestine C. Adkins of Danville; one brother, C.L. Carter Jr. of Danville; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Hubert L. Carter and Frank E. Carter.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. James Albert officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Ella Coward
DANVILLE, Va. - Ella Merricks Coward, 80, of 537 Ricketts St., died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at Stratford House of Danville.
Born Nov. 16, 1918, in Callands, she was the daughter of William Merricks and Bessie Wright Merricks.
She was married
to Frederick Herman Coward on Nov. 25, 1937.
She worked for Healthtex as an inspector until her retirement. She was a member of County Line Christian Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include four sons, Jerry W. Coward, Milton W. Coward, Bobby S. Coward, all of Danville, and Maynard H. Coward; two brothers, Walter "Dooley" Merricks of Dry Fork and Jack Irvin Merricks of Callands; three sisters, Ava M. Willis of Dry Fork, Marie M. Wood of Swansonville, and Pauline M. Woodall of Axton; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Wallace Merricks and Odie Merricks; and one sister, Helen Merricks.
A funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at County Line Christian Church with the Rev. Ken Hall and the Rev. Dean Ashby officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 7:30-9 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and other times at the residence.
Earl Green
BROSVILLE, Va. - Earl Emerson Green, 64, of 2916 Sugartree Church Road, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at 12:41 a.m. at Salem Veterans Administration Medical Center.
Born Feb. 25, 1934, in the Brosville Community, he was the son of Malvin Neal Green and Ruth Haley Green.
He was of the Baptist faith and lived all his life in Pittsylvania County. He attended Brosville High School, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He served in
in the U.S. Army as military policeman. He was employed as a carpenter before retiring on disability.
Survivors include three brothers, Sam Green of Mount Cross Road, Russell Green of Baltimore, Md., and Harold Green of Pelham, N.C.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Green Family cemetery, Brosville, with the Rev. Dr. Ross L. Range Sr. officiating and military honors conducted by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.
Robert Jones
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Lee "Bob" Jones, 73, of 221 North Ave., died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 5, 1925, in Danville, he was the son of Posey H. Jones and Maude Lee Townsend Jones.
He was married
to Peggy Nichols on June 10, 1956.
He was a veteran of World War II in the Army Air Corps. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church where he was a former member of the Board of Deacons, a member of the choir, and a member of the men's Bible class. He graduated from Averett College in 1952 and worked at H.K. Porter-Disston for a number of years and was later employed at Brockway Glass as a storeroom manager until his retirement.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Barry M. Jones and Phillip G. Jones of the residence; and one daughter, Sally L. Jones of the residence.
He was predeceased by one brother, Posey H. Jones Jr.; and one sister, Jacqueline Jones Moyer.
A graveside service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dr. Eddie Davis and the Rev. Kyle Flora officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Catheryne Mathes
DANVILLE, Va. - Catheryne Hyler Mathes, 79, of 116 Avalon Drive, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health.
Mrs. Mathes was born in Pittsylvania County on Jan. 18, 1920, and she was the eldest daughter of Drewery Hyler Sr. and Myrtle Green Hyler.
She was predeceased by her husband, James Eugene Mathes Jr., who died in 1964. She was also predeceased by a brother, Pete Hyler, who died in 1988, and a grandson, Jimmy Edwards, who died in 1984.
She spent most of her life living on Horseshoe Road in Bachelors Hall. She retired from Dan River Inc. after 30 years of service. She was a member of Vandola Baptist Church and the Pearl Davis Women's Circle of the church.
Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Pat Edwards of Greensboro, N.C., Kathy and Tony Walker of Dover, Del., and Mary and Danny Stevens of the residence; one sister, Audrey Hyler Carmichael; two brothers, Drew E. Hyler Jr. and Nelson P. Hyler Sr., all of Bachelors Hall; five grandchildren, Tony Walker Jr., Catheryne Walker, Ann, Amanda, and Alyssa Stevens; and two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Aaron Walker.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Leroy Clack and the Rev. Bill Soyars officiating. Interment
will be at the Green family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 3-4:30 p.m., and other times at the residence.

Bertie Sutton
DRY FORK, Va. - Bertie Arnold Sutton, 83, of 1552 Jones Mill Road, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, in Stratford Health Care Center in Danville.
She was born Aug. 10, 1915, in Hardin, N.C. She was raised by her uncle and aunt, Henry and Etta Sain Kale.
She was first married
to John Lee Arnold, who died Feb. 22, 1941. She spent most of her life in Fort Mill, S.C., and was retired from Springs Mill Inc.
She was a former member of The First Baptist Church of Fort Mill, and the Willie Mae Warren Circle. After she moved to Chatham, she joined Hopewell United Methodist Church, where she was active in the morning Bible study and the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Senior Citizens at Chatham Baptist Church.
She was predeceased by her husband, W.E. Sutton Sr.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Arnold Maxey of Dry Fork and Carol Sutton Shealy of Easley, S.C.; two stepdaughters, Betty Sutton Patterson of Fort Mill, S.C. and Shirley Pearson of Newark, Del.; three sisters, Iva Sain Adams of Winnsboro, S.C., Ruby Sain Hancock of Rock Hill, S.C., and Edith Sain Wellman of Lancaster, S.C.; two brothers, O.H. Sain of Fort Mill and Broddus Vernon of Alexis, N.C.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. today from Hopewell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clay Knick officiating. Burial will be in Unity cemetery in Fort Mill.
The family will receive friends at the church and at the residence of Henry and Linda Maxey, 1353 Jones Mill Road.

James Eanes
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - James Ralph Eanes, 73, of 1121 Chatham Heights Road, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born Jan. 10, 1926, in Mountain Valley, he was the son of Homer Robert Eanes and Beatrice Richard Eanes.
A U.S. Navy veteran who served on Guam Island, he retired from Roy Stone Transfer after 25 years of service. He was a member of Calvery Christian Church, Christian Men's Fellowship, VFW No. 4637 and AMVETS No. 35, the Moose Lodge and he was a graduate of the National Business College in Roanoke.
Survivors include one son, Ralph Bruce Eanes of Richmond; two brothers, C.N. "Ted" Eanes and Bobby G. Eanes, both of Martinsville; two sisters, Inez Eanes Shorter of Martinsville and Lois Eanes Frith of Bassett; and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Stafford Eanes and Jim Eanes.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Norris Funeral Services with the Rev. Eldon Morgan and Rev. J.C. Keesee officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of his sister, Inez Shorter, 2 Tanglewood Drive.
Cosimo Giuffrida
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Cosimo Giuffrida, 89, of 1717 Irish St., died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Nov. 1, 1909, in Middletown, Conn., he was the son of Joseph Giuffrida and Rosa Giuffrida.
He was married
to Norma Sue Hudson Giuffrida, who survives.
He was an Army veteran having served in World War II. He was a retired teacher of the New Haven, Conn., school system.
He received a master's degree in music and was a professional musician. He was a member of the American Federation of Musicians in Middleton, Conn., and the New Haven Federation of Musicians in New Haven, Conn.
In addition to his wife of South Boston, survivors include two sisters, Josephine Alexander of Modesta, Calif., and Rosa Rodgers of Portland, Conn.; and one brother, Louis Giuffrida of Monument, Colo.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Shady Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. Burial will be in the Shady Grove United Methodist Church cemetery, Virgilina.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hudson.
