DANVILLE, Va. - Eliza Hairston Totten, 66, of 108 Berman Drive, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 13, 1932, in Danville, she was the daughter of Dewey Hairston and Elvira Hairston. She was married
to Leroy Totten, who survives.
She was a social worker with Fred T. Hatcher Center. She was a member of Jones Chapel Baptist Church, where she was a member of senior choir, missionary society, deaconess, chairperson of trustees board, and director of the children's choir.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include four sons, Dennis Irving and William Michael Irving, both of Danville, Issac Irving Jr. of Reidsville, N.C., and Kenneth Irving of Chatham; one stepson, Donald Robinson of U.S. Army, Panama; two daughters, Valorie I. Chesney of Sanford, N.C., and Shelby Irving of Danville; two brothers, Charles E. Hairston and George D. Hairston, both of Danville; five sisters, Edna Fulton and Yvonne Miller, both of Laurelton, N.Y., Hazel Walker of Danville, Betty Jean White of Orlando, Fla., and Pat "Evelyn" Hairston of Rego Park, N.Y.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Hayes McConnell officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the residence.
A viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. today at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
Ethel Goins
DANVILLE, Va. - Ethel Averette "Millie" Goins, 84, of 106 Williams St., died Friday, Jan. 30, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 26, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George Averette and Captola Luck.
She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, and was a domestic worker.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Johnson officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
A viewing will be 4-8 p.m. today at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her nephew, Robert H. Osborne, 106 Williams St.
Clarence Hosley Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Clarence O'Dell Hosley Jr., of 228 Park Circle, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 2, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born in Burlington, N.C., he was the son of Clarence O'Dell Hosley Sr., and Lillie Edwards Hosley.
He was married
to Willie Owen Hosley, who survives.
He served for nine years in the United States Army, including service in World War II, and served for two years as a honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National cemetery.
He had spent most of his life in Danville, where he was a retired supervisor for Dan River Inc. and a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Sylvia Ann Hosley of Danville; one son, Clarence O'Dell Hosley III, of Mebane, N.C.; four sisters, Helen H. Turner of Salem, Hazel H. Holder of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., Juanita H. Cox of Smith Mountain and Rachel H. Scott of Roanoke.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dana Hunt and Rev. Kenneth Whisnant officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and at other times at 154 Fairmont Circle in Windsor Heights.
Howard Knick
DANVILLE, Va. - Howard E. Knick Jr., 72, of 732 Hughes St., died Tuesday morning, Feb. 2, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three months of declining health.
Mr. Knick was born in Schoolfield on June 27, 1926, a son of Howard E. Knick Sr. and Iva Stanley Knick.
Mr. Knick was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He had spent most of his life in Danville where he was a retired letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of the American Legion Memorial Post No. 1097, and the V.F.W. Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647, and of the Baptist faith.
He was predeceased by a half sister, Clyde Evelyn Brooks
He is survived by a sister, Carolyn Knick Dunn of Danville, and one niece, Cindy Boyer of Danville.
Graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Johnny Gentry and the Rev. Don Frank. Military honors will be performed by the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m., and at other times at the residence of his sister, Carolyn Dunn at 211 Cumberland Drive.

Ernest Snead
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Ernest Monroe Snead, 74, of 220 Moffett St., died Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 2, 1999, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County after one year of declining health.
Born July 2, 1924, in Blanch, N.C., he was the son of Bernard Thomas Snead and Mary Bennett Carmichael Snead.
He was married
Aug. 27, 1966, to Helen Smith Snead, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville where he worked at Dan River Inc. for many years before retiring at age 62. He was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Helen Marie Snead Yarboro and Patsy Gale Snead Ragsdale, both of Danville; one son, Patrick Dale Snead of Danville; two step-sons, Billy James Pearson and John Wesley Pearson, both of Danville; one sister, Dorothy Snead Wall of Danville; four step-brothers, Luke Snead of Danville, Earl Snead of Dry Fork, Troy Snead of Roxboro, N.C. and Donald Snead of Jacksonville, N.C.; one step-sister, Vickie Slayton of Danville; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Jerrell Monroe Snead, who died April 8, 1971; a step-brother, Bobby Snead; and a step-sister, Frances Snead Smith.

Foy McCann Terry
DANVILLE, Va. - Foy McCann Terry, 88, formerly of 227 Brightwell Court, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, where she had been a resident for eight years. She had been in declining health for 20 years.
Born July 29, 1910, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Thomas McCann and Betty Nichols McCann.
She had lived in Danville since 1956, was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Staunton River Baptist Church. She was married
to Johnny Coleman Terry Sr., who died Dec. 5, 1991.
Survivors include four sons, Larry H. Terry and Ernest L. Terry, both of Danville, Sam T. Terry of Richmond and Cooper B. Terry of Bassett. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Terry was predeceased by her son, John C. Terry; her brother, Willie J. McCann; and her sister, Lessie M. Coley. She was the last surviving member of her generation.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Percy Cox
DANVILLE, Va. - Percy Pershing Cox, 80, of 8 Old Halifax Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 2, 1918, in Danville, he was the son of Joe Cecil Cox and Mary Lee Dove Cox.
On Jan. 13, 1945, he was married
to Mary Chattin Cox, who survives.
He was of the Baptist faith. A self-employed mechanic with Cox's Garage, he served in the Army during World War II.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Patricia C. Scearce and Selona C. Wilkerson, both of Danville; one son, Joe D. Cox, of Danville; one sister, Mildred C. Moorefield, of Danville; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Myrtle C. Burton and Ruby C. Barbra; and two brothers, George W. Cox and Gorman Cox.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Wallace officiating.
The family will receive friends 6:30 - 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Raymond Gilbert
GRETNA, Va. - Raymond Wade Gilbert, 70, of 1877 Hodnett Road, died Sunday night at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born Aug. 18, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Elsie Stone.
He was married
to Jennette Miller Gilbert, who predeceased him.
He was a retired construction worker and a member of Mt. Airy Baptist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Geneva Kittles of Gretna.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Mt. Airy Baptist Church with the Rev. R.P. King officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Laura Hendrix
DANVILLE, Va. - Laura Alma Hendrix, 87, of 1873 Mill Creek Road, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 19, 1912, in Alberta, she was the daughter of Charles Jones and Pinkey Brown Jones.
She was married
to Mast Hendrix, who predeceased her.
She was a member of the Higher Heights Evangelistic Church of Lynchburg.
Survivors include two daughters, Pinky A. Cooper of Danville and Katherine Weddington of Baltimore, Md.; three grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was the last member of her generation.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Motley G. Davis and Pastor Madnoria Hayes officiating. Burial will be in The New Jerusalem Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery in Java.
