Minnie Lewis
BLAIRS, Va. - Minnie Ola Oakes Lewis, 88, of 1484 Snakepath Road, formerly of Keeling, Va., died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at her residence, after a two-year decline in health.
Born Dec. 16, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, she was the son of Luther Coleman Oakes and Sallie Booth Oakes.
She was a member of Afton Road Primitive Baptist Church. She had been a resident of Keeling since 1927, and a resident of Blairs for two years. She was a homemaker.
In 1927 she was married
to Herman Jones Lewis, who died Jan. 23, 1973.
She was the last surviving family member of her generation.
Survivors include two brothers-in-law, Edward C. Lewis of Blairs and the Rev. W.B. Jones of Dry Fork, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Ruby O. Oakes of Blairs and Helen R. Oakes of Columbia, S.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts, North Main Chapel with Elder Danny Parker officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Ruby Pritchett
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruby Dodson Pritchett, 90, of 901 Washington St., died Sunday Jan. 31, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 22, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George Dodson and Emma Hayes Dodson.
She was a laborer with Dan River Mills Inc. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Marvin Ellis Pritchett of Greenwood, Del.; four daughters, Melba Griffith, Norma Bennett, and Carolyn Thornton, all of Danville, and Barbara Carter of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and one brother, Willie James Dodson of Danville.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Missionary Church. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
A viewing will be 4-8 p.m today at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
Rachel Rust
DANVILLE, Va. - Rachel Wiles Rust, 80, of 53 Glen Oak Drive, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 2, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after five months of declining health.
Born July 10, 1918, in Ashe County, N.C., she was the daughter of William J. Wiles and Cora May Caldwell Wiles.
She was married
to George Edward Rust Sr.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she was a homemaker and attended the Church of the Brethren on Glen Oak Drive.
Survivors include four sons, Jackie Rust of Suffolk, Jerry Rust of Great Mills, Md., George Rust Jr., of Christiansburg and David Rust of Danville; two daughters, Nadara Kingery of Spring Garden and Irene Horsley of Dry Fork; one sister, Tincey Farrington of Pfafftown, N.C.; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dale F. Watson officiating. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.

Margie Davis
DANVILLE, Va. - Margie Lynwood Davis, 83, of 1725 Vandola Church Road, in the Vandola community, died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 4, 1999, at her residence after a decline in health for the past year.
Born Nov. 16, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Benefield Davis and Elizabeth Moss Davis.
She spent her entire life in the Vandola Community and was a member of Vandola Baptist Church. She retired from Dan River, Inc.
Survivors include two brothers Benjamin Davis of the Vandola community and Sanford Davis of Staten Island, N.Y.; three sisters, Frances D. Powell of the Vandola community, Erma D. Hagood of Danville and Neva D. Scearce of Bachelors Hall.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Soyars officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
William Epps
VERNON HILL, Va. - Willian Lee Epps, 67, of 2175 Asbury Church Road, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 6, 1931, in Halifax County, he was the son of Walter Thomas Epps Sr. and Mabel Arendall Epps.
He was married
to Margaret Mitchell Epps, who survives. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by three daughters, Wanda Vaughan of Danville, Debbie Compton of Vernon Hill and Elizabeth Roller of Scottsburg; three sisters, Juanita Shields, Peggy Palmer and Kitty Hayslett, all of Lynchburg; and one brother, Ronald Dean Epps of Rustburg. He was predeceased by one brother, W.T. Epps Jr.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tim Earnhardt and the Rev. Bob Watts officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Donald Hughes
Donald Hughes, 78, of 630 Monroe St., died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 20, 1920, in Philadelphia.
He was married
to Shirley E. Hughes, who survives.
He was senior field inspector for Bay Area Rapid Transit, San Francisco.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, John R. Hughes of Midlothian, Va., and Marshall S. Hughes of Herndon, Va.; two daughters Donna K. Hughes of Colunbia, Md., and Valeria C. Porterfield of Sicklerville, N.J.; and six grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Episcopal Church of the Ephiphany. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Mildred Saunders
DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred Page Saunders, 89, of 2501 Westover Drive, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at Stratford Health Care Center. She had been in declining health for several years.
Born Nov. 1, 1909, in Rockingham County, N.C., she was the daughter of Rufus Samuel Page and Nora Alley Page.
She was married
on July 3, 1937, to Alex Robert Saunders, who survives.
She had lived in the Westover community for 43 years, where she was a homemaker. She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church as long as her health permitted. She was a past Sunday school teacher, member of the Ladies Fellowship Circle and had served on the church's building committee.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by three sisters, Annie P. Smith and Lucille P. Andrews, both of Reidsville, N.C., and Marion P. Bedwell of Danville. She was predeceased by one sister, Ethel P. Strader; and one brother, James Allen Page.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday from Woodlawn Baptist Church with the Rev. William Blalock and the Rev. Dr. W.L. Wade officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.

Hattie Stowe
DANVILLE, Va. - Hattie Dodd Stowe, 78, of 156 Forestdale Drive, Apt. 205, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at her residence.
Born March 15, 1920, in Danville, she was the daughter of Tom Dodd and Mary Booze Dodd.
She was a housewife and of the Christian faith. Her husband, Harold Dewey Stowe, died Dec. 20, 1987.
She is survived by one son, Harold Thomas Stowe of Danville; one sister, Pattie Dodd Rigney of Danville; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by one daughter, Betty S. Wells.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Freddie Vicks officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Rufus Whitt
VIRGILINA, Va. - Rufus Jordan Whitt, 80, of 1172 cemetery Road, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at his residence.
Born July 28, 1918, in Halifax County, he was the son of Johnnie Green Whitt and Willie Ida Ford Whitt.
He is survived by four sisters, Hazel Elizabeth Whitt and Jerline "Alma" Terry, both of Halifax, Gladys Marie Lewis of South Boston and Bobbie Jean Lunsford of Stem, N.C.; three brothers, John Junior Whitt of South Boston, Franklin Delano Whitt of Boydton and Talmadge Pendelton Whitt of Halifax. He was predeceased by two brothers.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in the Whitt family cemetery in Virgilina with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating.

Howard Blackmon
VIRGILINA, Va. - Howard Taft Blackmon, 72, of 8203 Bill Tuck Highway, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, in Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Aug. 30, 1926, in Pelham, N.C., he was the son of Zeb Vance Blackmon and Bessie Bayes Blackmon.
He was married
to Margaret Elliott Blackmon.
A retired textile worker for J.P. Stevens, he was a U.S. Navy veteran. He attended Hitesburg Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, of Virgilina, survivors include two daughters, Betty B. Townsend of Drakes Branch and Phyllis B. Matthews of Danville; a son, Howard Lewis Blackmon of Virgilina; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Brooks Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Bill Salmons officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery in South Boston.

Eva Brammer
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Eva Mae Brammer, 69, of 331 Wickham St., died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, in Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Aug. 20, 1929, in Bluefield, West Virginia, she was the daughter of Clarence Stouse Brammer and Olive Pearl Smith Brammer.
Survivors include two daughters, Rita Diane McGregor and Norma Jean Blanks Dix, both of South Boston; two sons, Paul Franklin Blanks and David Allen Saunders, both of South Boston; two sisters, Mary Conner Reynolds of South Boston and Jane Murray of Wheeling, West Virginia; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Black Walnut Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating.
