Cecil Bernard Motley
GRETNA, Va. - Cecil Bernard Motley, age 91, of Zion Road, Gretna, died Saturday, December 14, 2002 at Gretna Health Care Center.
Born January 24, 1911 in the Sheva Community of Pittsylvania County, Va., he was a son of the late Leslie B. Motley and Pattie Shelton Motley. Mr. Motley was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Shepherd Motley; two brothers, Herman D. Motley and Duke S. Motley; four sisters, Bernice Isaacs, Clarice Austin, Charlotte Motley and Shirley Motley. He was the oldest living member of Sheva Church of Christ and was a retired farmer.
He is survived by three sons, Archie L. Motley and his wife, Mary of Chatham, Sterling H. Motley and his wife, Betty of Danville and Ray C. Motley and his wife, Anita of Chatham; four daughters, Pattie M. Farthing and her husband James, Carolyn M. Shelton and her husband, Bobby, Cecil Faye Shelton and her husband, Cecil and Brenda G. Motley, all of Gretna; a sister-in-law, Bevelene Motley of Chatham; a brother-in-law, Joseph Austin of Englewood, N.J.; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 17, 2002 at the Colbert-Moran Chapel by Larry Owen, Minister and Frank Fuller, Minister.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence of his son, Archie L. Motley, 6021 Strader Road, Chatham.

Anna Dean Shelton
DRY FORK, Va. - Anna Dean Shelton, 71, of 2624 Dry Fork Road, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 3, 1931, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Daniel Latney Shelton and Cassie Meadows Shelton.
She was a member of Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Calvin A. Shelton, A.G. "Sheriff" Shelton, Otis L. Shelton and Dewey D. Shelton.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Kenneth E. Terry and the Rev. Harry Meadows officiating. Interment will be at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery.
The body will lie in state one hour prior to the funeral service.

Cecil H. Tilghman
DANVILLE, Va. - Cecil H. Tilghman, 81, 226 South Raleigh Court, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 22, 1921, he was the son of William Edward and Margaret Somers Tilghman, both deceased.
He was married to Doris A. Tilghman, who is still living, on Nov. 28, 1946.
He was an insurance salesman for American General Insurance Co. until his retirement. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in the Infantry division. He was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by one son, Jeff Tilghman of Danville; one daughter, Anne T. Bowman of Durham, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Steve Carlton officiating. Graveside military honors will be given by American Legion Memorial Post #325 Honor Guard.

Mary Ruth Adkins Trent
WILMINGTON, N.C. - Mary Ruth Adkins Trent, 88, of Wilmington, N.C., died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002 in Autumn Care of Myrtle Grove, after several years of declining health.
Born Nov. 4, 1914, in Museville, Va., she was the daughter of Charlie Ward Adkins and Kate Pruitt Adkins.
She married Walter F. Trent, who predeceased her.
She lived her entire life in the Danville area prior to moving to Siler City in 1995 and then to Wilmington, N.C. in 1997. She was a homemaker and a member of Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church. She was the last surviving member of her generation.
She is survived by two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Claudette J. Layton; one son, Langston Jones; and one sister, Elizabeth A. Faison.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Danville Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Jimmy Burks officiating.

Mildred Burnette White
HALIFAX, Va. - Mildred Burnette White, 85, of 1153 Ferry Trail, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at her home.
Born April 17, 1917, in Bradley County, Tenn., she was the daughter of James William Burnette and Grace Lee Trew Burnette.
She was a member of the Piney Grove Methodist Church in Cleveland, Tenn.
She was married to Luke White, who predeceased her.
She is survived by three daughters, Grace W. Elliott of Scottsburg and Janice W. Alspaugh and Norma W. Newbill, both of Halifax; one son, Larry D. White of North Royalton, Ohio; one sister, Cynthia O. Lipford of Montcalm, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers and one sister.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. David Kilpatrick officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 Monday at Powell Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence.

Clara Echols
DANVILLE, Va. - Clara Swanson Echols, 81, of 228 Grant St., died Monday, May 6, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 12, 1920, in Henry County, she was a daughter of Lewis Swanson and Mary Divens Swanson.
She was married to Thurman O. Echols Sr., who survives. She was a custodian for Danville Public Schools and was a member of Union Street Missionary Baptist Church, where she was on the deaconess board, missionary society and kitchen committee.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include three sons, the Rev. Thurman O. Echols Jr. of Axton, Herman U. Echols of the residence and the Rev. Darry O. Echols of Hampton; two daughters, Rosa E. Brown of Danville and Gloria E. Saunders of Danville; one brother, Johnnie Swanson of Baltimore; two sisters, Esther Mae Law of Danville and Sally Holley of Axton; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Loyal Baptist Church with Dr. Samuel Griffith officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
The viewing was held from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

DANVILLE, Va. - Leovia Long Henry, 75, of 627 Cabell St., died Thursday, May 9, 2002, at Piney Forest Nursing Center in Danville.
Born May 10, 1926, in Blanch, N.C., she was the daughter of Charlie Henry Long and Etta Long.
Survivors include one daughter, Eunice Burton Jackson of Danville; three sisters, Marlene Wharton and Mabel Hodnett, both of Danville, and Lois Howard of New York; one brother, Linwood Palmer Long of Bronx, N.Y.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Alphonzo Tate officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Ruby Stephens
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Ruby Hamlett Stephens, 94, of 10672 N.C. Highway 86 North, died Friday, May 10, 2002, at the residence.
Born June 28, 1907, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of George Thomas Hamlett and Leanna Taylor Hamlett, both deceased.
She was married to Walter Thomas Stephens, deceased. Mrs. Stephens lived most of her life in Caswell County, North Carolina where she was a homemaker. She was a member of Gatewood Spiritual Baptist Church, Providence, N.C. She was in the hospital for one week prior to her death at the residence.
Survivors include 4 nieces, Dolly Jackson, Alease Bowen, and Dorothy Blalock, all of Roxboro, NC, and Elsie H. Criner of Danville, VA; 2 nephews, Jimmy Hamlett of Providence, NC, and Thomas Lee Buck of Eden, NC; sister-in-law, Mamie Hamlett of Providence, NC; and a number of great nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by four sisters and one brother.
The funeral will be held Sunday, May 12, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. at Gatewood Spiritual Baptist Church, Providence, NC by the Rev. Johnny Gentry. Burial will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Sanford Taylor
DANVILLE, Va. - Thomas Sanford Taylor, of 346 Laurel Woods Drive, Danville, died Friday morning, May 10, 2002 at his residence.
He was born on April 13, 1926, in Danville the son of H.S. Taylor and Lena Powell Taylor.
He was married to Kittye Bradley Taylor, who survives of the home.
He graduated from Brosville High School. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Navy on the USS New York, seeing action at Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
He was a retired sales representative for Valley Dale Meat Packers, where he was their Man of the Year for several times. At the time of his death, he was associated with Danville Toyota. He was a charter member of the American Legion Post #325, a charter member of Tuscarora Golf Club. He was an amateur radio operator for over 50 years, his call sign K4WW1.
He was a member of Mount Herman Baptist Church.
He was predeceased by a son, Sandford "Sandy" McRae Taylor.
He is survived by his wife of the home, on sister, Frances Taylor Alverson of Danville, two brothers, William Bill Taylor of Danville, and Dewey Lee Taylor of Pinbrook Pines, Florida, two half sisters, Linda Taylor Jarosz and Betty Taylor Call, both of Danville, two nephews, Burton T. Sparks of Danville and R. Bradley Sparks of Greensboro, NC.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 12, 2002 at 3:00 pm from Mount Herman Baptsit Church by the Rev. Don Davidson. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

SHAWNEE, Okla. - Avis Tinsley, 90, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at a local nursing home.
Born Jan. 5, 1912, in Climax, Va., she was the daughter of Jack and Gillis McCrickard McDowell.
She was married to Isaac Earl Tinsley. She was a member of the Gordon Cooper Church of God. She lived in Pennsylvania for a number of years and lived in Danville for a short time. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include three sisters, Mozelle Campbell, Vernice Handey, and Inez Blalock, all of Danville; and one brother, Herman McDowell of Danville.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one sister and four brothers.
The funeral was held 10 a.m. Friday at Gordon Cooper Church of God with the Rev. Veda McMillian officiating. Interment followed at Bethel Cemetery.

Jeanette Ward
HALIFAX, Va. - Jeanette Singleton Ward, 53, of 1079 Daniels Trail, died May 10, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born April 14, 1949, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Elmer Lacy Singleton and Aileen Francis Singleton.
She was married to Thomas David Ward. She was a member of Revelation Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of Halifax, include one daughter, Sherri Ward Lindsey of Halifax; one sisters, Virginia Eastwood of Reidsville, N.C.; three brothers, Carson Wayne Singleton, Doug Singleton, and Billy Ray Singleton, all of Reidsville, N.C.; one grandchild.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Revelation Baptist Church with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Interment will follow at Childrey Baptist Church cemetery.

Bernard O. Burgess Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Bernard O. Burgess Sr., 74, formerly of 606 Worsham St., died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. He had been a patient at Roman Eagle since September 2001.
Born Oct. 12, 1928, in Surry County, he was the son of Waverly L. Burgess and Wilma King Burgess, both deceased.
He lived most of his life in Danville. He retired from Plumbing & Mill and also from Fiberglass Tub Repair. Prior to that, he worked for Coca-Cola. He was a member of Riveroak Church of God, Improved Order of Redmen, Poquison Tribe #124, a Past Master of the Masons and was formerly on the Board of Directors at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
He was a veteran having served four years in the U.S. Marines.
He was the last surviving member of his generation.
He was married to Ruth Duncan Burgess, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter-in-law, Sue Burgess of Burlington, N.C. and two grandchildren, Amy Burgess and Amanda Burgess.
He was predeceased by a son, Bernard O. Burgess II.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Ellis Nuckles officiating. Interment will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens with Masonic Rites by Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge #122.
