Johnny Walden
HURT, Va. - Johnny Wayne Walden of 2133 Shula Drive died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, in Virginia Baptist Hospital, Lynchburg.
Born Feb. 3, 1999, in Lynchburg, he was the son of John Wayne Walden and Betty Compton Walden.
In addition to his parents of Hurt, survivors include two sisters, Samantha Walden and Michelle Walden, both of Hurt; a brother, Johnathan Walden of Hurt; his paternal grandmother, Mary Jane Walden of Climax; and his maternal grandfather, Hubert Compton of Chatham.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Greenbay Christian Church cemetery with Rudolph A. Hearn, minister, officiating.
Scott Funeral Home in Chatham is in charge of arrangements.
Mildred Grubb
CHATHAM, Va. - Mildred Waller Grubb, 65, 120 Gammons Lake Road, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 24, 1933 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Willie Thornton Waller and Louise Johnson Waller.
She was married
to Burl Saunders Grubb, who survives.
She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by one son, Michael B. Grubb of Morehead City, N.C.; two brothers, William D. Waller and Vernon T. Waller, both of Dry Fork; and one sister, Frances W. Holt of Greensboro, N.C.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Grubb Family cemetery with the Rev. Haywood Alcorn officiating.
The family will receive friends today 7-8 p.m. at Scott Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her brother, 360 Hopewell Road, Dry Fork.
George Hughes Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - George Andrew Hughes Jr., 55, 205 Walnut Road, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health since December.
Born Dec. 25, 1943, he was the son of George Andrew Hughes Sr. and Rachel Robertson Hughes Lewis.
He was married
June 22, 1973 to Jeanette Byrd Hughes, who survives.
He lived his entire life in the Danville area and was the owner and operator of George A. Hughes Plumbing and Repair until his retirement. He attended Welcome Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Christopher George Hughes and James Allen Hughes both of the residence; a step-father Malcolm Lewis of Danville; one sister, Frances Macklen of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and one step-brother, Olin Lewis of Flint Stone, Ga.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Hussey officiating. Interment
will be at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends today from 6-7:30 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
Patty Neal
DANVILLE, Va. - Patty McDaniel Neal, 91, 2302 South Boston Road, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999 at her residence. She had been in declining health for four weeks.
Born May 4, 1907 in Lunenburg County, she was the daughter of Gustavus Edwin McDaniel Sr. and Sally Elizabeth Hite McDaniel.
In 1925, she was married
to A. Edward Neal who predeceased her.
Mrs. Neal moved to Danville at an early age when her father was called to the Danville Tobacco Market. She was educated in the Danville City School system, except her last two years, when she attended Dan River High School.
In 1925, she was married
to Arthur Edward Neal and she lived in the Raleigh, N.C. area and returned to Ringgold in 1944, where she and her husband built and operated Neal's Self-Service Grocery and Shell Station for many years.
She was a member of Ringgold Baptist Church for over 50 years and was a former Sunday school teacher, choir member and later a member of the Fidelis Sunday school class and the Joy Club.
Survivors include a son, A. Calvin Neal and his wife Jean of Ringgold; two grandsons, Michael A. Neal and his wife, Debra, and Barry S. Neal and his wife, Donna, all of Ringgold; a sister, Mary M. Woolweaver of Cary, N.C.; two sisters-in-laws, Helen Neal of Richmond and Dorothy McDaniel of Kenbridge; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Ringgold Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl E. Burger officiating. Interment
will be at the Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, 1541 Ringgold Road.

Frank Owen Jr.
CORONDAO, Cailf. - Frank Thornton Owen Jr., 74, of 754 A Ave., died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999 at his residence in Coronado.
Born Sept. 13, 1924, in Danville, Va., he ws the son of Frank Thornton Owen and Pearl Allen Owen.
He graduated from George Washington High School and was a 1947 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. After a 23-year career in the navy, he retired in 1969 as a commander and took up residence in Coronado.
During the past 10 years, he enjoyed roller skating competitively in dance competitions and won many state and national awards.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Phyllis Davis Owen; a sister, Dorothy A. Owen of Danville; a son, Wayne A. Owen of Coronado; and a grandson.
A memorial service with full military honors was held Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999 at Fort Rosecrans National cemetery in Point Loma, overlooking San Diego, the Pacific Ocean and the North Island Naval Air Station.
Hattie Stowe
DANVILLE, Va. - Hattie Dodd Stowe, 78, of 156 Forestdale Drive, Apt. 205, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at her residence.
Born March 15, 1920, in Danville, she was the daughter of Tom Dodd and Mary Boaze Dodd.
She was a housewife and of the Christian faith. Her husband, Harold Dewey Stowe, died Dec. 20, 1987.
She is survived by one son, Harold Thomas Stowe of Danville; one sister, Pattie Dodd Rigney of Danville; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by one daughter, Betty S. Wells.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Freddie Vicks officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Tommy Stowe at 2819 Blairmont Drive.
John Clark
DANVILLE, Va. - John Norman Clark, 91, formerly of 2212 Spencer St., died Saturday evening, Feb. 6, 1999, at Riverside Health Care.
Born Feb. 5, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John T. Clark and Ella Taylor Clark.
He worked for Dan River, Inc. as a warper in the card room until he retired. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was married
to Erma Reynolds Clark, who predeceased him.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. D. Scott Holcomb-McLain officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his nephew, Earl "Whitey" Hall, 339 Terry Ave.

Jane Hamilton
DANVILLE, Va. - Jane Winifred Hassett Hamilton, 80, of Westover Manor, 4020 Westover Drive, Lot No. 72, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at her residence after a decline in health for two weeks.
Born March 24, 1918, in Olean, N.Y., she was the daughter of Goldie and Thomas Hassett.
She was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Greensboro, N.C., and she was a member of Order of the Eastern Star.
From 1960 to 1992, she lived in Wareham, Mass., before moving to Greensboro. She had been a resident of Danville since 1996. She was a homemaker.
On March 24, 1942, she was married
to Howard Earl Hamilton, who died Jan. 25, 1996.
Survivors include one son, Robert E. Hamilton of Danville; three granddaughters, Sherri D. Francisco and Kathryn W. Hamilton, both of Danville, and Ashley C. Hamilton of Demopolis, Ala.; two grandsons, Daniel S. Hamilton of Boston, Mass., and Scott C. Hamilton of Demopolis; one grandson-in-law, Terry L. Francisco of Danville; and two great-grandsons, Joshua T. Francisco and Austin T. Francisco, both of Danville.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Nancy Jane Hamilton.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, with the Rev. William Poulos officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Harry "Tom" Newman
DANVILLE, Va. - Harry Thomas "Tom" Newman, 80, of 106 Cathy Drive, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at his residence after a decline in health for three months.
Born Sept. 9, 1918, in Bedford, Va., he was the son of Bailey Paris Newman and Nora Cook Newman.
He was a member of Third Avenue Christian Church and a member of the American Legion Post No. 325.
He lived most of his life in Danville. A retired paint contractor, he owned and operated Newman Painting.
He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean conflict.
On August 22, 1964, he was married
to Audrey Jean Wilson Newman, who survives.
He was formerly married
to Dorothy McClanahan Newman, who predeceased him.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Brenda Newman Davis and Jo Ann Grainger, both of Danville, and Patsy Kay Bradford of Austin, Texas; one son, William "Bill" Glosson of Danville; one brother, Winifred Newman of Danville; one sister, Iva Newman Hawkins of Danville; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Sylvia Newman Amico; and three brothers, Minnis Newman, Ezra Newman, and John Newman.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Freddy Vicks, the Rev. Daryl Joyce and the Rev. Ray Newman officiating. Interment

Johnny Pounds
DANVILLE, Va. - Johnny Otis Pounds, 44, formerly of 341 Airport Drive, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at Craig County Hospital. Born Feb 21, 1954 in Pittsylvania County, he was the adopted son of Ethel T. Pounds, who survives, and Robert Pounds. He was a member of East New Hope Baptist Church and was with the U.S. Marine Corps.
In addition to his mother of Danville, survivors include two brothers, Paul Pounds and Paul Logan, both of Danville; five sisters, Phyliss P. Ferguson, Katie Logan and Ellen Davis, all of Danville, and Mary Logan of Maryland, and Shelby Holburt of Martinsville.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at East New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Marcellous D. Mack officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the residence of Ethel Pounds on Halifax Road.
