Charlie Jennings
NATHALIE, Va. - Charlie William Jennings, 73, of 1081 Cora Watts Trail, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, in Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Feb. 18, 1925, in Halifax County, he was the son of Heddly E. Jennings and Lelia Coates Jennings.
He was married
to Lucille C. Jennings. He was a member of Ellis Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, of Nathalie, survivors include two sons, Jimmy Jennings of Danville and Joseph Jennings of Lynchburg; a stepdaughter, Marilyn Mann of Nathalie; one stepson, Teddy Ray Coates of Halifax; one brother, Herbert Jennings of Nathalie; two sisters, Virginia McKinney of Halifax and Katie Crews of South Boston; one grandchild and one stepgrandchild.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert Jennings and Claudie Jennings; and two sisters, Rosa Hailey and Ethel Cook.
A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from the chapel of Powell Funeral Home in South Boston with the Rev. Charles Ward officiating. Burial will be in Ellis Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Clarence Rice
VIRGILINA, Va. - Clarence Drewry Rice, 80, of 1137 Wilborn Road, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, in Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Oct. 29, 1918, in Halifax County, he was the son of Johnnie B. Rice and Emma Tuck Rice.
He was married
to Morine E. Rice.
He was retired from maintenance at Rochester Button Co. and was a member of Union United Church of Christ, where he was a deacon.
In addition to his wife, of Virgilina, survivors include his son, Allen C. Rice of Fairburn, Ga.; a daughter, Iris R. Murray of Virgilina; a brother, Claude Rice of Virgilina; two sisters, Pearl R. Yancey of Virgilina and Elsie R. Murray of Colonial Heights; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Union United Church of Christ with the Rev. Bobby Whitfield officiating. Burial will be in Virgilina cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Brooks Funeral Home in South Boston and at other times the family will be at the residence.
Clarence Waller
DANVILLE, Va. - Clarence Bee Waller Sr., 71, of 1849 Fall Creek Drive, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 27, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John L. Waller and Rosa Mae Fitzgerald Waller.
He was married
to Sarah Giggetts Waller, who predeceased him.
Survivors include three daughters, Nancy A. Graves, Alma Giggetts Dodson and Penny Clark, all of Danville; one son, Clarence B. Waller Jr. of Newark, N.J.; two sisters, Helen Terry of Danville and Ophila King of Newark.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Nancy Graves, 122 Huntington Place, Sandy Shores.
The Rev. Earl Younger
GRETNA, Va. - The Rev. Earl Edward Younger, 74, of 2737 Zion Road, died Sunday morning, Feb. 14, 1999, at his residence.
Born Aug. 31, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Langhorn Younger and Lelia Crews Younger.
He was a retired carpenter and a member of Fairview Baptist Church, where he served as associate minister.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Younger of Gretna; three sons, Mark E. Younger and Michael E. Younger, both of Germantown, Md., and Jonathan Younger of Gretna; three daughters, Debra Y. Bell and Kimberly R. Younger, both of Germantown, and Nicole S. Younger of Gretna; a foster daughter, Gloria Jean Burke of Roxsboro, N.C.; three sisters, Vernell Byrd, Virginia Keatts and Gladys Burwell, all of Gretna; five brothers, Bobby Younger of Columbia, S.C., Walter Younger of Washington, D.C., Franklin Younger of Philadelphia, Pa., Lindberg Younger and Hurbert Younger, both of Gretna; two grandchildren, one stepgrandchild, two foster grandchildren, and three foster great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by six brothers, Charlie, James, Harry, Parrish, Burton and Edison Younger; and one sister, Thelma Dearing.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday from the chapel of Miller Funeral Home in Gretna with the Rev. Clarence Waller and the Rev. Hubert White officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Baptist Church cemetery.
Cleveland Brandon Jr.
HARTFORD, Conn. - Cleveland Brandon Jr., 48, died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, at the Hartford Hospital in Hartford.
Born April 2, 1950, in Halifax County, Va., he was the son of Cleveland Brandon Sr., who predeceased him, and Isabella Cobbs Brandon, who survives.
He was a native of Halifax County and later moved to Hartford. He was educated in the public schools of Halifax County.
In addition to his mother of Danville, survivors include one son, Ricardo Montez, stationed in Arizona; two sisters, Odessa Chavious of Alton and Eliza Frooks of Baltimore, Md.; two brothers, Dean Brandon of Danville and Otis Brandon of New York; one grandchild.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Greater Brandon Baptist Church in Alton, Va., with the Rev. H.R. Surgeon officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
A viewing will be noon to 8 p.m. at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel in Semora, N.C.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Odessa Chavious, 1177 Mason Chapel Road, Alton.
Robert Fitzgerald
CHESTER, Va. - Robert Thomas Fitzgerald, 65, died at his residence Monday, Feb. 15, 1999.
Mr. Fitzgerald was born in Winston-Salem, N.C., and was a son of the late William Russell and Mary Cunningham Fitzgerald.
He was a graduate of George Washington High School in Danville and a graduate of Randolph Macon College.
He served in the U.S. Army for two years, then returned to Danville to GW, where he taught for two years. He retired from the Bureau of National Affairs after 25 years of service, and was a math teacher and tennis, track and football coach at Benedictine High School in Richmond until 1991.
He was a member of Chester Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Barbara Johnson Fitzgerald of Chester; two sons, David Lloyd Fitzgerald and Robert Thomas Fitzgerald Jr. and his wife Toney Roberts Fitzgerald, all of Richmond; three granddaughters, Britney, Kathryn and Gracie Fitzgerald; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Lee and Robert Laprade of Linthicum Heights, Md.; a brother and sister-in-law, William R. and Betty McNichols Fitzgerald of Danville; five nieces and four nephews.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Chester Baptist Church, 4317 School St. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the Chesterfield chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 3050 W. Hundred Road.

Arnold Groff
TUCSON, Ariz. - Arnold Malloy Groff, 71, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, after several years of declining health.
Born Jan. 5, 1928, in North Carolina, he was the son of Arnold E. Groff and Cora B. Groff.
He was retired from the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include one brother, Noble Groff of Danville; two sisters, Helen Light of Danville and Irene Weatherford of Ringgold; three daughters, Anna Orgeron of Colorado, Crystal Radley of Tucson, and Cora Tyson of Greenville, N.C.; and one son, Arnold Groff of Tucson.
Funeral arrangements were held in Tuscon, Ariz.
Barker Funeral Home in Danville, Va., was in charge of local arrangements.
William Jones III
HALIFAX, Va. - William Harrison "Bill" Jones III, 62, of 1203 Bellevue Road, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, in Durham Regional Hospital in Durham, N.C.
Born March 6, 1936, in Halifax County, he was the son of William H. Jones Jr. and Elizabeth Landrum Jones.
He was married
to Myrna Terry Jones. A U.S. Navy veteran, he was employed in maintenance for the town of South Boston.
He was a member of Berry Hill Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his wife, of Halifax, survivors include two sons, Calvin "Sput" Jones of South Boston and Michael Terry Jones of Halifax; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Brooks Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Larry Frakes and the Rev. Joe Brewer officiating. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home in South Boston and at other times the family will be at the residence.
Anthony Broadnax
DANVILLE, Va. - Anthony Fernendo "Main" Broadnax, 39, of 308 Haraway Road, died Sunday morning, Feb. 14, 1999.
Born March 30, 1959, in Danville, he was the son of Edmonia Motley and William J. Broadnax.
A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, he was employed with Masonite Corp. He graduated from George Washington High School and attended Danville Community College. He was a member of Bibleway Church Worldwide.
Survivors in addition to his mother of Danville and father of Washington, include his sister, Dr. Vickie Motley of Hampton; and two sons, Demarcus Coleman of Danville and Whitney Harvey of Baltimore, Md.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from the cathedral at Bibleway with Apostle Lawrence G. Campbell Sr. officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will be at the residence.

Walter Dunkley
LYNCHBURG, Va. - Walter Dunkley Jr., 53, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
He was born May 25, 1945, in Halifax County.
He was married
to Juanita Dunkley.
In addition to his wife of Naruna, survivors include one daughter, Maria Yuille of Naruna; three sisters, Rosetta Scott, Emma Payne and Barbara Jones of Nathalie; two brothers, Joe Dunkley and John Dunkley of Nathalie.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. today at Crawford, Garrett and Burton Funeral Chapel in Halifax, with the Rev. James Traynham officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Rosetta Scott, 3108 Thornton Road, Nathalie.
