Sidney Allen
HALIFAX, Va. - Sidney Roy Allen, 66, of 2209 L.P. Bailey Hwy., died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999 at his home.
Born in Halifax County on Dec. 29, 1932, he was the son of John Berkley Allen and Janie Riddle Allen. He served in the Air Force for four years.
He is survived by three brothers, Thomas Edward Allen of Amherst, Eugene Lacy Allen of Richmond, and Dennis Bailey of Halifax.
He was predeceased by three brothers, John Hubert Allen, James Brice Allen, and William Douglas Allen.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church of Republican Grove with the Rev. Shelton Miles officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the home of his brother, Dennis Bailey Allen, 1039 Carter Lane, Halifax.
Timothy Bethel
DANVILLE, Va. - Timothy DeLenzo Bethel, 38, of 26 Paul St., died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999.
Born Sept. 7, 1960, he was the son of Thomas Bethel and Fannie Totten Bethel.
He was married
to Mary Tucker Bethel.
Survivors in addition to his wife, of the residence, and mother of Danville, include three daughters, Shemeka Graves and Nichelle Morton, both of Danville, and Robin Slade of Greensboro, N.C.; three sons, John Tucker of Atlanta, Ga., Robert Morton III and Acey Morton, both of Danville; and one sister, Shanta Thomas of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday at the chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence and also at the home of his mother at 728 Temple Ave.
Harry Brooks
DANVILLE, Va. - Harry Lillard Brooks, 69, of 308 Freeze Road, died Friday morning, Feb. 19, 1999, at his residence after declining in health for the past year.
Mr. Brooks was a native of Gretna, born Nov. 14, 1929. He was the son of the late Andrew Jackson Brooks and Susie Shelton Brooks. Most of his life was spent in Danville, where he was the manager of the Big Star Supermarket for 35 years. He was married
to the former Della Craig Brooks, who surivives him.
Mr. Brooks was of the Baptist faith and a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Army in Korea.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the residence are two sons, Garry Wayne Brooks and daughter-in-law Carolyn Brooks, Durham, N.C., and Richard Andrew Brooks of Danville; one brother, Andrew Jackson Brooks Jr. of Chicago, Ill.; two grandchildren, Lauren Brooks and Adam Brooks, both of Durhan, N.C. He was predeceased by his sister, Jettie Poteat.
A funeral will be conducted today at 2 o'clock from the graveside at Highland Burial Park with Dr. Eddie Davis and the Rev. Kyle Flora officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 308 Freeze Road.
Richard Hall Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Richard Compton Hall Sr., 66, of 220 Crestwood Drive, died Friday morning, Feb. 19, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after declining in health for seven years.
Born May 21, 1932, in Patrick County, he was the son of Dewey Hall and Verda Thomas Hall. He was married
to Shirlene Ayers Hall, who survives.
Most of his life was spent in Danville, where he retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. as a foreman. He was of the Baptist faith, a member of the Bowling Hall of Fame, and the Goodyear Retirement Club.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Richard "Ricky" Hall of the residence; two daughters, Pamela H. Hedrick of Danville and Denise Hall of Pelham, N.C.; two brothers, Esmond Hall of Vesta and Mack Hall of Statesville, N.C.; and one grandson.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Mayes officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Frances Wilmoth
RINGGOLD, Va. - Frances Louise Gillespie Wilmoth, 88, of 1925 Ringgold Road #23, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999 at the Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
She was born Aug. 24, 1910 in Danville and was the daughter of Albert Wilson Gillespie and Bettie Fannie Yates Gillespie.
On May 2, 1931 she married
Robert Henry Wilmoth, who predeceased her on June 20, 1973.
She lived her life in the Danville area where, prior to her retirement after 50 years of service, she was employed at the Danville Knitting mill. She was a member of Mosley Memorial United Methodist Church.
She is survived by one son, Ronald Weston Wilmoth, of Danville; one daughter, Bettie Frances Wilmoth Long, of Ringgold; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by one son, Bobby Ray Wilmoth; and one half-sister, Grace Lee McClelland.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Interment
will take place in the Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Earnest Logan
GRETNA, Va. - Earnest Jr. Logan, 76, 2989 Midway Road, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999 in the Danville Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 3, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Logan and Katie Carter Logan.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Burlington Glass Fabrics in Altavista. He was also a member of Mount Nebo Baptist Church, where he served on the Board of Deacons.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca F. Logan, of the residence; two sons, Earnest A. Logan and Lynwood Logan, both of Gretna; three daughters, Rosa Carter of Chatham, Laura Lewis of Burlington, N.J., and Betty F. Dent of Gretna; one brother, David Logan, of Roanoke; two sisters, Corine Clark of Gretna and Gladys Clark of Rustburg; 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was also predeceased by five brothers, Joseph Logan, Henry Logan, Raymond Logan, John Eddie Logan, and James Logan; and two sisters, Fannie Walthall and Edith Callands.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Miller Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roger Williams officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Nebo Baptist Church cemetery.
Katherine Oakes
DANVILLE, Va. - Olivia Katherine Alden Oakes, 77, of 34 Baltimore Ave., died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 22, 1921, in Schoolfield, she was the daughter of William Frank and Clara McPeak Alden. She was retired from Dan River Inc.'s Research Division 2. She was also a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Jefferson H. Oakes, of the residence; one daughter, Barbara Laney, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one son, Jerry Oakes, of Greenville, S.C.; two brothers, Roger Alden of Greensboro, N.C., and John Alden of Williamsburg; one sister, Betty Lou Jordan of Little Rock, Ark; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one brother, Bill Alden.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Dana Hunt officiating.
The family will receive friends 4-5:30 p.m. today at the Townes Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.
Robert Pickeral
GRETNA, Va. - Robert Grover Pickeral, 83, of 106 Motley St., died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at his residence.
Born September 19, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Richard Pickeral and Jenny Chism Pickeral. He was the owner/operator of Pick's Radio Cab. He was also a World War II Army veteran and a member of American Legion Post #232.
He is survived by his wife, Tiny Lewis Pickeral, of the residence; a daughter and her husband, Sandra and Paul O'Keefe of Norfolk; a son and his wife, Glenn and Tina Pickeral of Chatham; and four grandchildren, Jennifer, Mckenzie, Vincent, and Barron.
He was also predeceased by three brothers, Clyde Pickeral, James Pickeral, and Russell Pickeral; and three sisters, Doherta Lovelace, Doris Lovelace, and Ina Bane.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at the Colbert-Moran Funeral Home Chapel by Randy Parker, minister. Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.

James Pickrell Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - James Thomas Pickrell Jr., 80, of 216 Arnett Blvd., died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for 15 months, and had been a patient in the hospital for one day.
Born Aug. 18, 1918, in Danville, he was the son of James Thomas Pickrell Sr. and Cora May Roberts Pickrell.
On Dec. 20, 1956, he was married
to Doris Louise Brooks Pickrell, who survives.
He was member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church. He lived most of his life in Danville; before his marriage he had lived in Pelham, N.C. He was retired from Dan River Inc. where he worked in the maintenance department. After retiring, he worked as a custodian at Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.
He was also a U.S. Navy veteran, and served during World War II.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, survivors include a son, Harold Wayne Pickrell of Durham, N.C.; three daughters, Virginia Pickrell Fluet of Durham, Betty Pickrell Craig and Diane Pickrell Willis, both of Danville; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Lee Ellison and the Rev. Steve Carlton officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Mildred Spencer
VERNON HILL, Va. - Mildred "Milly" Chandler Spencer, 44, of Carlbrook Road, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at Duke Hospital, Durham, N.C.
She was born in Halifax County, Va., on Aug. 19, 1954, and was the daughter of Sam Chandler and Mildred Conner Chandler. She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Jesse R. Spencer Jr., of the residence; one daughter, Johanna Maria Spencer, of Vernon Hill; two sons, George-Tyler Spencer and J.R. Spencer III, both of Vernon Hill; two brothers, Sam Chandler Jr., of Charlotte, N.C., and Danny Scott Chandler of Atlanta, Ga; one sister, Dianne C. Shortt, of Nathalie; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by one daughter Jessica Paige Spencer; and one sister, Judy Chandler Owen.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Brooks officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Bethel Baptist Church.

"Randy" Vernon
DANVILLE, Va. - Randolph E. Vernon, 53, 537 Ferry Road, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born in South Boston on July 4, 1945, he was the son of Wrenton Randolph and Arrie Mittie Congleton Vernon. He was a heavy equipment operator for Riverside Equipment Co. and a member of Semora Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Valerie Hundley Vernon, of the residence; two daughters, Robin Jennings of Danville and Renee Hicks of Atlanta, Ga.; three brothers, Robert L. Vernon of Reidsville, N.C., and Ricky Vernon and Rodger Vernon, both of Milton, N.C.; and one granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at the Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Joe Grubbs officiating. Burial will take place in the Highland Burial Park.
