Born in the Spring Garden community on Nov. 5, 1912, Orlin became a local legend because of his outstanding baseball career and the many dedicated years he spent in coaching. From his graduation at the University of Virginia in 1935 to his early career with the Washington Senators, Orlin loved all sports, especially golf, which he played up until his death. Orlin Rogers had many thrills in baseball over the years but his most vivid memory is of a September day in 1935 when he strode from the bullpen to the mound in Washington's Griffith Stadium for his first appearance in the major leagues, facing the New York Yankees and Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig whom he later struck out with two out and bases loaded.
Orlin also served for 27 years in the military, serving in both World War II and Korea. He served in the Virginia National Guard until his retirement. Although he owned several restaurants in Danville and Williamsburg, his happiest years were spent at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham as head of the military department and coach of the baseball and rifle teams. He spent 18 years at Hargrave and to this day still received many phone calls and letters from "his boys."
Orlin was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Glenn Gardner Rogers, who died in 1995. He leaves behind two daughters, Linda R. Harrill and her husband Scott of Raleigh, N.C., and Ginger R. Ferrell and her husband Don of Winston-Salem, N.C. Mr. Rogers also has four beautiful grandchildren, Lori Katherine Hyler, J. Bradley Hyler, Taylor Orlin Ferrell and Kelsey Lynn Ferrell. One of nine children of the late Mumford and Dora Rogers, he was preceded in death by his two older siblings, Fitzhugh Rogers and Susie Rogers Barbee. Rogers of Seneca, S.C.; and Glenn R. Yates of Danville. He also leaves many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
