Fletcher D. Harris
DANVILLE, Va. - Fletcher D. Harris, 74, of 406 Downing Drive, died Friday, January 10, 2003, at his residence after several months of declining health.
Born February 2, 1928, in Weldon, N.C., he was the son of Joseph M. Harris and Claudia Newnam Harris.
He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church. He graduated from Benjamin Franklin University (now George Washington University) in 1949. He passed the CPA Exam in 1951 and opened his office. After 51 years, he retired from Harris, Harvey, Neal & Co.
He also served in the Army Transport Service in 1945-46.
He served on City Council for four years and as chairman of the finance committee for two years. He was past president of the Danville Jaycees and past treasurer of Virginia Jaycees. He served on the Board of Virginia Society of CPAs and as President. He was appointed to the State Board of Accountancy by Gov. John Dalton, serving two years as chairman.
He was a former member of Danville Sertoma, past governor of the Moose Lodge, member of the Elks Club, 32nd Degree Mason Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, member of Roman Eagle Lodge #122 A.F. & A.M. and the Improved Order of Red Men, Poquoson Tribe #124. He also served as chairman of Piedmont Council of Boy Scouts of America.
In addition, he served on the Board of Directors of Danville Industrial Development, Inc. for 50 years. He also served on the board of directors of Danville Area Development Foundation from its inception.
He was married to Helen Ogburn Harris for 55 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Kathleen H. Boltinghouse and her husband, David, of Danville and Ellen H. Johnston and her husband, Lee, of Philadelphia; two grandsons, Mican H. Crane of Danville and Benjamin Johnston of Philadelphia, Pa.; a granddaughter, Emily Johnston of Philadelphia, Pa.; two brothers, Charles E. Cook and Mike Harris, both of Danville and a number of nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Samuel L. Harris.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park. Masonic Rites will be conducted.
The family received friends 2:30-4 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times will be at the residence.

Bessie Louise Rich Howerton
DANVILLE, Va. - Bessie Louise Rich Howerton, 91, of 2526 North Main St., died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Sept. 14, 1911, in Graham, N.C., she was the daughter of Will Rich and Julia Owen Rich.
She lived her entire life in the Mount Hermon and Dry Fork communities and was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church.
She was married to Melvin A. Howerton, who predeceased her in 1988.
She is survived by four daughters, Mildred H. Emerson of Chester, Stella H. Emerson of Dry Fork, Minnie H. Easley of Chatham and Vivian H. Hall of Danville; four sons, Herbert H. Howerton of Axton, Glenn D. Howerton of Blairs, James W. Howerton of Danville and Charles D. Howerton of Blairs; 34 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Vernon Rich, a son, Aubrey Howerton and a daughter, Dorothy Howerton.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Teresa Campbell Lewis
GRETNA, Va. - Teresa Michelle Campbell Lewis, 34, of 1436 Farmers Road, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Piney Forest Health Care Center in Danville.
Born Nov. 6, 1968, in Danville, she was a daughter of Joseph Hail Campbell, who predeceased her and Betty Pruitt, who survives.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Gretna and a former employee of Mt. Airy Elementary School.
In addition to her mother of Pelham, N.C., she is survived by her husband, Danny Lewis of the residence; a daughter, Jessica Michelle Lewis, also of the residence; a sister, Susan Renee Campbell of Keeling and her maternal grandmother, Frances Pruitt of Vernon Hill.
In addition to her father, she was predeceased by her maternal grandfather, Jessie G. Pruitt and her paternal grandparents, Lucy and Buford Campbell.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. Harold Thornton and the Rev. Hank Meadows officiating. Interment will follow in the Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence.

William Arthur McMillan Jr.
COLLINSVILLE, Va. - William Arthur McMillan Jr., 49, of 63 Glenn Dale, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born Aug. 17, 1953, in Martinsville, he was the son of William Arthur McMillan Sr., who predeceased him and Iva Riddle McMillan, who survives.
He was a graduate of Fieldale Collinsville High School. He was self-employed and attended County Line Christian Church.
He was married to Nancy Barrow McMillan.
In addition to his mother of the Mountain Valley community and his wife of the residence, he is survived by a daughter, Linda Gail McMillan; a son, Tate McMillan, both of Collinsville and a grandmother, Beatrice B. Hatley of Martinsville.
In addition to his father, he was predeceased by a brother, Steven Wayne McMillan.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Norris Funeral Services Chapel, Martinsville, with Dean Ashby officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Norris Funeral Services and at other times at the residence of his mother, 8909 Chatham Road, Martinsville.

Berry Williams Settle
ALBERTA, Va. - Berry Williams Settle, 98, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, in Danville at the residence of her daughter-in-law, Ruth S. Settle, whom she lived with since 1993.
She was a member of Lawrenceville Baptist Church and active for more than 50 years in Alberta civic and community life. She was a member of the Alberta Woman's Club, Alberta Book Club, Alberta Bridge Club and a charter member of Red Oak Hall.
She was married to R. Reid Settle, who predeceased her.
She is survived by two sons, Dr. Bill Settle of Sanford, N.C. and Jim Settle of Alberta; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy S. Hornaday and a son, John R. Settle.
The funeral was held 1 p.m. Friday at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville. Interment was in Crestview Memorial Park.
The family received friends one hour prior to the funeral.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to a favorite charity.
Juanita Parrish Shacklock
DANVILLE, Va. - Juanita Parrish Shacklock, 82, of 1605 Blair Loop Road, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and two days in the hospital.
Born Oct. 25, 1920, in Rusk, Texas, she was a daughter of James Hurd Parrish and Lizzie Davis Parrish.
She had lived in Virginia Beach prior to moving to Danville, where she lived for the last year. She was of the Presbyterian faith.
She was married to Ramon M. Shacklock.
In addition to her husband of Chesapeake, she is survived by two sons, James Slaski of Virginia Beach and Ramon M. Shacklock Jr. of Danville; two brothers, Glenn Parrish of Axton and W.T. Parrish of Houston, Texas; three sisters, Louise P. Cantrell of Dallas, Texas, Jeannie Parrish of Las Vegas, Nev. and Joyce P. Baker of Austin, Texas; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Dawn Gandy.
A private memorial service may be held at a later date.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Audrey Shropshire
EDEN, N.C. - Audrey Shropshire, 70, formerly of 230 E. Harris St., died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Morehead Nursing Center.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Reynolds Funeral Home in Eden, with the Reverend Harold Cox officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.
A native of Eden, Mrs. Shropshire retired in 1991, after a career as a rug designer with Karastan in Eden.
She was predeceased by her parents, Roy and Mamie Shropshire, a sister, Helen Sawyers Schubert and first husband, Leon Ingram, whom she married on June 27, 1953.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry Shropshire of the home; son, Lee Ingram of High Point; granddaughter, Allyson Ingram of Madison; brothers, James Shropshire of Hilo, Hawaii and Wayne Shropshire of High Point; sisters, Shirley S. Hodnett of Winston-Salem and Carolyn Harris of Centerport, N.Y.
Family visitation will be at Reynolds Funeral Services in Eden on Monday, Jan. 13, 7-9 p.m.

Rose Miller Spence
RINGGOLD, Va. - Rose Miller Spence, 56, of 296 Deerwood Creek, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, in Danville.
Born Dec. 15, 1946, in Jackson, Miss., she was the daughter of James Miller, who predeceased her and Gertrude Shepherd Miller, who survives.
She had lived in Danville for the past 25 years and worked at Dan River Mills for 24 years. She was a member of Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church.
She was married to Stephen Rodgers Spence, who survives.
In addition to her mother of Texas and her husband, she is survived by a son, James Ervin Schrock of Dansville, Mich.; a daughter, Laurie Ann Slaughter of Ringgold; a stepson, Christopher Lee Spence of Roxboro, N.C.; two brothers, John Miller of Harrison, Mich. and Perry Miller of Texas; two sisters, Martha Jayne of Ringgold and Sherry Tomlinson of Texas and three grandchildren.
The memorial will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Burks and the Rev. Kenneth Milam officiating. Interment will be private.

Bessie Adkins Walker
DANVILLE, Va. - Bessie Adkins Walker, 73, of 356 Parkland Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center after being in declining health for the past year.
Born Feb. 21, 1929, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Henry H. Pruitt and Nellie Terrell Pruitt, both deceased.
Mrs. Walker was a member of Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church. Most of her life was spent in Danville where she worked as a nursing assistant for Roman Eagle Memorial Home for 32 years.
She was married twice, first to Edward T. Adkins, who predeceased her and then to Robert Walker, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by a son, Thomas Wayne Adkins and his wife, Joan Adkins, of Danville; a brother, William H. Pruitt of Hampstead, N.C.; a sister, Almeda Hubbard of Danville; a granddaughter, Christy Joyce and a great-granddaughter, Brittany Joyce, both of Danville.
In addition to her parents and first husband, Mrs. Walker was predeceased by a sister, Edna Rose and a brother, Otis Pruitt.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dr. Charles B. Scearce officiating.

Wiley Everett Webb
DANVILLE, Va. - Wiley Everett Webb, 83, of 172 Bowe St., died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for the past five years and was taken to the hospital after suddenly becoming ill at his residence.
Born May 2, 1919, in McDowell County, W.Va., he was a son of Lawrence Webb and Mandy Bowman Webb.
He had resided in the Danville area for the past 54 years. He retired from Dan River Mills at age 62, after 38 years of service. He was a member of the Church of God Prophecy on Baltimore Avenue.
He was married to Zefra Turman Webb.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Myrtle Utt of Fancy Gap and a brother, Norman Webb of Mt. Airy, N.C.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Charles Hawkins officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence, located in the Bachelors Hall community.

Roy Wingfield Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - James Roy Wingfield Sr., 84, of 4464 Old Richmond Road, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Riverside Health Care Center after several years of declining health and 12 days in the hospital.
Born Feb. 7, 1918, in Martinsville, he was a son of the late James Minor Wingfield and the late Martha Kallam Wingfield.
Mr. Wingfield had lived all of his life in Danville and Pittsylvania County. He had retired from Danville Regional Medical Center, formerly Danville Memorial Hospital, where he had worked as an electrician. Prior to being employed by the Danville Memorial Hospital, he worked for the former Danville Electric Company for a number of years.
Mr. Wingfield was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church.
He married Maude Vernon Wingfield on April 12, 1939.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a son, James (Jimmy) R. Wingfield Jr. and his wife, Edith S. Wingfield, of Danville; two daughters, Martha Sue W. Dill and her husband, Bill Dill, of Natural Bridge and JoAnn A. Bishop of Virginia Beach; a sister, Jessie Willie Coleman of Danville; three half brothers, James Minor of Richmond, Luther H. Wingfield of Kembridge and Willie A. Wingfield of Farmville; a niece, Sally C. Shields of Danville; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Mae W. Huffstetler and two half brothers, Charles Wingfield and Carlton Wingfield.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Dr. A.C. Smith officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
