Hazel Fowler
DANVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Hazel Gunnell Fowler, 77, of 834 Stokesland Ave. Ext., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, after a four-month decline in health with cancer.
Mrs. Fowler was a native of Danville, born Aug. 16, 1921. She was the daughter of the late Robert Irvin Gunnell and Minnie Ola Eanes Gunnell. She was married
to Albert L. "Teenie" Fowler Sr. on Aug. 29, 1942. Most of her life was spent in Danville and she was a homemaker.
She was a longtime member of the former Southall Baptist Church and a present member of the Timberlake Baptist Church. She was a volunteer at the Danville Regional Medical Center for 18 years in the puppet workshop and was a member of the Ladies Benevolent Society.
Surviving are four sons, Albert L. Fowler Jr. and daughter-in-law, Karen, Donald L. Fowler Sr. and daughter-in-law, Sue, Ricky L. Fowler and daughter-in-law, Lynn, all of Danville, and Keith L. Fowler and daughter-in-law, Karen, Waldorf, Md.; two former daughters-in-law, Connie Fowler Casey of Danville and Iva Fowler Hubbard of Eden, N.C.; one sister, Virginia G. Dewberry of Danville; eight grandchildren, Toni Fowler Morris, Albert L. "Bert" Fowler III, Donald L. Fowler Jr., Kristin Fowler, Whitney Fowler, Melanie Fowler, Joseph Fowler, and Patrick Fowler; five great-grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Clarence Gunnell, Harry Gunnell and Jesse Gunnell; and a sister, Annie G. Bradley. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted today at 2 o'clock from the Timberlake Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Pruitt, the Rev. Walter Yancey, the Rev. Gilmer Setliff and the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Ricky L. Fowler, 340 Mount Hermon Circle.

Thomas Gardner
COLLINSVILLE, VA. - Thomas Clinton Gardner, of 327 Wagner Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, at Memorial Hospital Martinsville-Henry County.
Born Sept. 5, 1916, in Reiner, he was the son of James Clayton Gardner and Pearl Gardner Surratt.
He was married
to Helen Bousman Eanes Gardner, who survives.
He was a member of Primitive Baptist Faith and attended Pleasant Grove Methodist Church. He was retired from Wilson Quarry.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Harless Davis Gardner and Thomas Lee Gardner, both of Martinsville, and Harold Clinton Gardner of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one brother, Clarence Gardner of Preston, W.Va.; two sisters Edith Gardner of Washington, D.C. and Marynell Swinney of Reiner; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Eula Bishop Gardner; and five brothers, Claude Gardner, Harlow Gardner, James Gardner, Fred Gardner and Vincent Gardner.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Norris Funeral Chapel with Elder David Minter and the Rev. Steven Propst officiating. Interment
with military honors will be in Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home on Thursday and at other times at the residence of Thomas Gardner, 240 Oxford Drive, Martinsville.
Dora Mayo
DANVILLE, Va. - Dora Lea Mayo, 56, of 1025 Walter Beaver Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C..
Born Jan. 10, 1943, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Archie Glass and Mildred Davis Glass, who survives.
She was married
to Earl L. Mayo, who survives.
In addition to his mother and husband, survivors include four daughters, Sandra Mayo Hairston, Pamela Davis, Jacqueline Brown, all of Danville, and Thelma Ferguson of Upper Marlboro, Md.; five sons, Donald Ray Saunders, Dennis Wayne Saunders, Michael Lynn Saunders, all of Richmond, Danny Saunders of Newark, N.J., and Carl Mayo of Cleverly, Md.; five sisters, Melissa Oakes of Patterson, N.J., Margaret Glass of East Orange, N.J., Bertha Hodnett of Danville, Janie Poteat of Hartford, Conn. and Barbara McDaniel of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother, Sterling Glass of Eden, N.C.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Rehoboth Apostolic Holiness Church with Elder Corey Torrain.
Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the residence of Sandra Hairston, 202 Swain St.

Etholian Maisel
DANVILLE, Va. - Etholian G. Maisel, 82, of 12709 Callands Road, Callands, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born March 3, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Oliver Gauldin and Lula Oakes Gauldin.
She was married
to Christian Maisel, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Christian Tabernacle of Callands. She lived most of her life in Baltimore, Md., where she worked at Spring Grove State Hospital Center until her retirement.
She is survived by her brother Forrest L. Cauldin of the residence and her sister Lottie Walker of Penhook.
A graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park. The Rev. J.D. Hunt will officiate.
The family will receive friends at Barker Funeral Home from 7-8:30 p.m. today and at other times at the residence.
Jean Wood Bostic
DANVILLE, Va. - Jean Wood Bostic, 70, of 1741 Blair Loop Road, died Monday morning, Feb. 22, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for 18 months.
Born Sept. 19, 1928, in Kennewick, Wash., she was the daughter of Ernest Wood and Olivia Pendelton Wood.
She was married
to Ernest Clyde Bostic Jr., who died March 27, 1997.
Most of her life was spent in Danville, where she was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in the accounting department prior to her retirement. She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church and the Goodyear Retirement Club.
Survivors include three sons, Dennis W. Bostic of Suffolk, David C. Bostic of Richmond, and Randall L. Bostic of Danville; and six grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Johnny Jones officiating.
The family will be at the residence of her son, Randall L. Bostic, 211 Forest Road Drive, off U.S. 29 north of Danville.

Janice Dalton
HURT, Va - Janice Davis Dalton, 61, of 204 Ramp Road, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at her residence.
Born Jan. 29, 1938, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Willie C. Davis and Jeniper Pearson Davis.
She was married
to Lester Dalton, who survives.
She was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church and a homemaker.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three sons, W. David Dalton of Hurt, Jerry L. Dalton of Chatham, and Barry L. Dalton of Union Hall; one daughter, Lori Wright of Hurt; one brother, Melvin T. Davis of Danville; one sister, Barbara Davidson of Waynesboro; and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her stepmother, Lillian Gammon Cocke Davis.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. today at New Prospect Baptist Church with the Rev. Brady Willis officiating. Burial will be in Green Lawn cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Edith Holden
MANSFIELD, Ohio - Edith Beatrice Ladd Holden, 87, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, following a brief illness.
Mrs. Holden was born March 17, 1911, in Middle Point, Ohio, living in the Mansfield area most of her life. She lived 15 years in Tavares, Florida. Mrs. Holden was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran church. She worked for Mansfield City Schools as a secretary at Prospect School. She was very active in the P.T.A. for many years and served as president. She was a graduate of Mansfield Senior High School, class of 1929.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Anne Holden of Mansfield; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Ed Palhamus of Danville, Va.; five grandchildren and their spouses, Anita and Ray Wasielewski of Columbus, Lisa and Randy Schuette of Charlotte, N.C., Alan and Karen Holden of Raleigh, N.C., Devin LaFlamme of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Brenda and Chris Anderson of Danville, Va; four great-grandchildren, three nieces, five nephews; one brother and sister-in-law Frank and Eunice Ladd of Naples, Florida; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Grace Willsey, and Alice and Louie Kordish, all of Mansfield; and one sister-in-law, Sue Ladd of London. She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy B. Holden, her parents, Cloyd and Bessie (Alspach) Ladd; two brothers, Loren and Wilmer Ladd, and one sister, Margaret Weiland.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Mansfield, conducted by Rev. George Lambert. Burial will be at Mansfield Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church or to Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville.

Ethel Perkins
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Ethel Dunaway Perkins, 88, of 5023 Bill Tuck Highway, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born July 18, 1910, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Samuel Nelson Dunaway and Mary Laura Motley Dunaway.
She was a member of Mount Cana United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Robert W. Perkins and Earl A. Perkins both of South Boston, and Steve W. Perkins of Charlottesville; three daughters, Thelma P. Daniel and Mary P. Redd, both of South Boston, and Mabel P. Perkins of Halifax; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Robert Lewis officiating. Burial will be Mount Cana United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Carl Rhodes, Jr.
DANVILLE, Va - Carl Huel Rhodes, Jr., 73, of 211 Clarkson St., died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, of several months of declining health at Danville Regional Medical Center for the past three weeks.
Born May 31, 1925, in Danville, he was the son of Carl Huel Rhodes, Sr. and Mary Kay Glasgow Nelson.
He served in the United States Navy in the European Theater during World War II. He lived his life in various cities in Virginia, including Danville, Martinsville and Chesapeake. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Rhodes was employed with Ford Motor Company as a supervisor and was also employed with Dan River Inc. for a number of years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a member of the Ringgold Golf Club.
Survivors include three sons Donny William Rhodes of Danville, Ronny James Rhodes of Virginia Beach; and Christopher Nelson Rhodes of Salida, Colo.; one sister Joan Miller of Chesapeake, Va., seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, George R. Rhodes.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Father David McGuire officiating. Burial will be in Leemont cemetery with graveside military honors conducted by the American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the Chapel on Friday and at other times at the residence of his son, Donny Rhodes, 302 Dunmore St.
Bunion Roach
GRETNA, Va. Bunion Dick Roach, 92, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, in Heritage Hall, Brookneal, Va.
Born July 6, 1906, in Bedford County, he was the son of Robert Roach and Alice Talbott Roach.
He was married
to Ninia Wright Roach, who survives.
He was a retired farmer.
In addition to his wife of Gretna, survivors include four sons Paul "Morgan" Thomas Roach of Huddleston, Russell James Roach of Gretna, Frank Roach of Hurt, Jessie Roach of Lynch Station; four daughters, Lorene Miller of Altavista, Opal Miller and Mary Tuck, both of Gretna, and Lucille Roach of Roxboro, N.C.; two sisters Vader Roach and Rader Roach, both of Gretna; 33 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
He is predeceased by a daughter Christine Krantz.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the family cemetery by the Rev. Barry Crumpton. The family will see friends Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his son Russell Roach, 986 Crown Road, Gretna.
