SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Thorburn Orpen Andrews, 74, of 607 Forest Drive, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at his residence.
Born Nov. 27, 1924, in Nottaway County, he was the son of Royal Hamilton Andrews and Annie Vaugan Andrews.
He was married
to Irene Andersen Andrews.
He was a retired manager for Rose's, where he had been employed for 31 years.
Survivors include two sons, Arthur Tribble Jr. of Virginia Beach and Grady Tribble of Norfolk; two brothers, R.C. Andrews of Frostproof, Fla. and John L. Andrews of Smithfield; two sisters, Irene A. Norton of Frostproof, Fla. and Francis A. Hicks of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Powell Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Powell Funeral Home with the Rev. George Gravitt, the Rev. Bob Watts and the Rev. John Wilder officiating.
The family will also receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Holomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Chapel, Norfolk. A graveside service be held 11 a.m. Tuesday in Forest Lawn cemetery, Norfolk.

Homer Burke Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Homer Benjamin Burke Sr., 65, of 917 Tunstall High Road, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at Duke Medical Center, Durham, N.C., after six years of declining health.
Born March 13, 1933, in Cummings, Ga., he was the son of Claude Wesley Burke and Lola Gerrells Burke.
He was married
June 21, 1959, to Mary Holiday Burke, who survives.
He lived in Hampton, Va. and worked for the Newport News Shipyards prior to moving to Danville in 1969. He worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company until retirement.
He was a member of United Steel Workers (Rubber Workers) Union Local No. 831. He was also a member of Victory Baptist Church in Hampton, and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include five sons, Doug Hall of Yanceyville, N.C., Darrell Hall of Dry Fork, Michael Burke of Alpharetta, Ga., Homer "Ben" Burke Jr. of Pell City, Ala. and Paul Burke of the residence; three daughters, Lori Flinchum and Deborah Burke, both of Dry Fork, and Brenda Beale of Danville; four brothers Howard Wesley Burke of Axton, Charles William Burke, Billy Joe Burke and Larry Wayne Burke, all of Dry Fork; two sisters, Waynell B. Jones and Linda B. Robertson, both of Danville; 18 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one grandson, Jacob Benjamin Flinchum.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Gil Hawks officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the chapel and at other times at the residence.
Viola Crews
DANVILLE, Va. - Viola Rice Crews, 79, of 1201 Inman Road, died Friday morning, Feb. 26, 1999, at her residence.
Born March 26, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Jim Rice and Ollie Thomas Rice Scott.
She was married
to Claude Lee Crews, who predeceased her.
She spent most of her life in Pittsylvania County, and made her home for the past six years in Brosville. She was a sitter for patients at the nursing home and hospital. She attended Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Elkins of Brosville; one sister, Lucille Adams of Penhook; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one sister, Helen Falls.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Gilbert Hawks officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Nancy Elkins, 1221 Inman Road, Brosville Community.
Samuel Davis
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Samuel Francis Davis, 59, formerly of Penhook, Va., died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, in Providence Hospital.
Born Feb. 13, 1940, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Floyd T. and Eula Bennett Davis.
He was last employed by Chunky-Noodle Company, as a truck driver. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Valerie Davis of Arlington, Va; one son, Wayne Davis of Baltimore, Md; two brothers, William Leonard Davis of Glade Hill, Va. and Clyde Nathaniel Davis of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Elsie Witcher and Eyvonne Newbill, both of Penhook, and Tamara Moore of Lorton, Va.; and eight grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, Va., with the Rev. Lewis A. Newbill officiating. Burial will be in the Davis family cemetery in Penhook.
The family will receive friends at the residence of W.L. Davis, 1444 Ayers Road, Glade Hill.
Coy Gibson
DANVILLE, Va. - Coy Clifton Gibson, 52, of 126 Ashwood Place, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a two-year decline in health.
Born May 24, 1946, in Eden, N.C., he was the son of Clifton Lee Gibson and Juanita Tolbert Gibson, who both survive.
He was married
to Constance Tilley Gibson, who also survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville.
He was employed by the Danville Police Department as a police officer for six years until his decline in health.
He worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 20 years where he was a member of the Top Ten Supervisors. He also worked for Schewels Furniture Co. for six years and was a coach for Danville Little League.
He attended Riveroak Church of God.
In addition to his parents of Eden, N.C., and his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Coy Gregory Gibson of Danville; one daughter, Kimberly Lokiel Ford of Eden, N.C.; one brother Gary Lee Gibson of Eden; and one grandchild.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Riveroak Church of God with the Rev. Tim Nuckles officiating. Burial will be in Danview cemetery in Eden with police honor guard to conduct honors.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Wendy Scearce
DANVILLE, VA. - Mary "Wendy" Dill Scearce, 40, of 433 Granville Drive, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center after an auto accident.
Born Sept. 24, 1958, in Danville, she was the daughter of Herman W. Dill and Mary Lowery Dill, who survives.
She lived in Danville most her her life and was educated in the Danville Public School system.
She was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church.
In addition to her mother of the residence, survivors include one son, Bryan L. Beazley of Springfield, Mo.; two sisters, Brenda D. Powell of Danville and Sharon D. Scearce of Dry Fork, Va.; and one brother, Ralph H. Dill of Danville.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Freddy Vicks officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Raymond Chumley
HURT, Va. - Raymond Wade Chumley, 79, of 1040 Jasper Wood Road, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at his residence.
Born July 16, 1919, in North Carolina, he was a son of the late Bill Chumley and Mattie Hurt Chumley. He was twice married
, first to the late Lucy Kirks Chumley and then to Ellen M. Chumley of the residence.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Gladys C. Riddle.
Chumley was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church and a retired employee of the Lane Co. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of DAV Chapter No. 46.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Malinda C. Newby and Patricia C. Giles of Chatham and Carolyn C. Mattox of Gretna; one step-son, Randy Mason of Gretna; two step-daughters, Hilda Smith of Hurt and Elsie Dickerson of Forest; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Gospel Light Baptist Church by the Rev. Scott Dean. Interment
with military honors by VFW Post No. 4165 and DAV Chapter No. 46 will follow in Hillcrest Burial Park, Chatham.
