Lucy Croxton
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - Lucy Cox Croxton, 93, of Hilton Head Island, S.C., died Saturday, February 27, 1999 at The Fraser Health Center.
She was born in Winston-Salem, N.C., on May 9, 1905 and was the daughter of the late John Emra and Mary Hunter Cox. She moved to Hilton Head Island in 1987 from Danville, Va.
Her husband of 59 years, Richard Archer Croxton, died in 1990. She was a graduate of St. Mary's School in Raleigh, N.C., and attended Brenau College in Gainesville, Ga. She was an honorary member of the Danville Garden Club and a former member of the Garden Club of Virginia. She was also a member of the Danville Wednesday Club. She was a nationally accredited flower show judge.
Mrs. Croxton is survived by her daughter, Mary Hunter Croxton Crose of Hilton Head Island; her son, Dr. Richard Archer Croxton Jr. of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Richard Rollin Crose Jr. of Hilton Head Island, Hunter Croxton Crose of Charleston, S.C., Archer Patchin Crose of Hilton Head Island, Richard Archer Croxton III of Holly Springs, N.C., Janet Croxton Baker of Reidsville, N.C., and Lucy Noell Croxton of Winston-Salem; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 3 at 1:30 p.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church in Danville. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.
The family suggests that those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Danville Historical Society Preservation Fund, P.O. Box 6, Danville, Va., 24543.

Dewey Ferrell
HALIFAX, Va. - Dewey Wilson Ferrell, of 2009 Oak Level Rd., died Feb. 28., 1999 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born March 27, 1915 in Halifax County, he was the son of Armistead Ferrell and Beulah Crenshaw Ferrell. He was married
to Neva Alderson Ferrell, who survives.
He ran the D.W. Ferrell store at Oak Level for 50 years. He was active in the Oak Level Volunteer Fire Department, serving in his later years as a charter member and an honorary member. He was active in the Oak Level Presbyterian Church as a deacon, an elder and a church trustee. He was a member of The Woodmen of the World Camp 127 at Vernon Hill.
In addition to his wife of Oak Level, he is survived by a brother, Fred Ferrell of Roanoke; one sister, Sudye F. DeJarnette of Albemarle, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Patricia Rutherford Hellyer of Rockville, Md.; two stepsons, James Wayne Rutherford Sr. of Vernon Hill, and Ray Warren Rutherford of Cluster Springs; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, at Oak Level Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Russell Lee officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home today from 7-8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence.
A.B. Jones Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Arthur Bruce Jones Jr., of 302 Northmont Blvd., died Sunday night, Feb. 28, 1999 at his residence, after a decline in health.
He was born July 21, 1926 in Danville, a son of Arthur Bruce Jones Sr. and Vergie Green Jones.
Mr. Jones was married
to the former Estelle Guthrie April 14, 1951. Mrs. Jones died Oct. 5, 1995.
Mr. Jones had lived all his life in Danville and was employed with the City of Danville for 40 years. He held the rank of captain at the Danville City Farm and retired in December 1989.
Mr. Jones was a United States Army veteran of World War II, having served in France and Germany.
He was a member of the Rivermont Baptist Church.
He is survived by a son, Michael D. Jones Sr. and his wife Sharion; two grandsons, Marvin Price and his wife Frankie, and M. David Jones Jr.; two cousins, Ann Crane and Jean Kellum; a brother-in-law, J.L. Gutherie, and an aunt, Frances Bowen.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 3, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. from Rivermont Baptist Church by the Rev. Jack Waddell and the Rev. Freddie Vicks. Interment
will be in Mountain View cemetery with full military honors by the American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home Tuesday night from 7:00 to 8:30 and at other times will be at the residence, 302 Northmont Blvd. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be sent to the Danville Life Saving Crew.
Madeline Meadows
CHATHAM, VA. - Madeline "Buba" Mays Meadows, 79, of 739 Fairview Road, North died Monday, March 1, 1999, at her residence.
Born Jan. 12, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Robert Mays and Bessie McDowell Mays.
She was married
to John Henry Meadows, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Samuel Harris Memorial Baptist Church. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Dan River Inc.
Survivors include three sons, Junior L. Meadows and Michael H. Meadows, both of Chatham, and Ronald W. Meadows of Danville; three daughters, Shirley M. Jones of King William, Jean M. Woodson and Christine M. Kronkowski, both of Chatham; one brother, Alvin Mays of Winchester; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Donald Bowden officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. at Scott Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Kronkowski.
Florence Murray
DANVILLE, Va. - Florence Draper Murray, 93, of 581 Songbird Lane, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born April 14, 1906, in Amia, N.Y., she was the daughter of George W. Draper and Genevieve Goodrich Draper.
She had been a resident of Danville since 1989.
She was married
to David Arthur Murray, who predeceased her Sept. 19, 1989.
Survivors include one son, Alan D. Murray of Danville; one daughter, Evan M. Cornell of Ocean Grove, N.J.; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. today at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Rebecca Powell officiating.
Florence Ramsey
GRETNA, Va. - Florence Myers Ramsey, 70, of 23904 U.S. 29, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at Gretna Health Care Center.
Born May 12, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of E. Reuben Myers and Cordie George Myers.
She was married
to George P. Ramsey, who survives. She was a member of Greenbay Christian Church and a retired employee of George Ramsey Construction Company.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Wallace G. Ramsey of Sandy Level and Steve A. Ramsey of Danville; three sisters, Gladys Yeatts of Gretna, Virgie Lee Nichols of Lynch Station and Loutricia Jacobs of Gretna; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a sister, Madeline Dalton; and a brother, Herman Myers.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Colbert-Moran Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Joe Glass and Rudy Hearn, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden.

Bessie Goode
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Bessie Jones Goode, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, in Manhattan, N.Y.
Born Jan. 25, 1945, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Lawson Jones Sr. who predeceased her and Mildred Hood Jones, who survives.
She was educated in Pittsylvania County's public schools where she graduated with honors from Southside High School, Blairs, Va. in 1964. She was a graduate of Smith-Madden Business College, Richmond, Va. In 1966, she moved to Brooklyn, where she was employed with Bell Atlantic Telephone Company, Inc. After 30 years of employment, she retired as managerial supervisor.
She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Brooklyn, where she was the church secretary, a member of the Trustee Board, and Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of many civic, professional clubs and other church organizations.
In addition to her mother of Hampton, Va., survivors include one sister Doris Jones Farmer of Hampton, Va.; and one brother, Alvin Jones of Danville, Va.
She was predeceased by one son; and two brothers, Lawson Jones Jr. and Andrew Jones.
A funeral will be held 10 a.m. Friday at New Hope Baptist Church in Brooklyn. Burial will be in New York.
