Eldridge Vernon
DANVILLE, Va. - Eldridge Gywnn Vernon, 70, of 428 Yarborough Mill Road, Milton, N.C., died Monday, March 1, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 24, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, the son of Clay Hester Vernon Sr. and Rebecca Bass Vernon.
He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, served in the United States Air Force, he was a Mason and a member of Caswell Masonic Lodge No. 11.
He was retired from Universal Leaf Tobacco Co. He worked the tobacco markets in Danville, Tabor City, N.C., Brookneal, Winston-Salem, N.C., Hartsville, Tenn., and others.
He was the first person in Danville to bowl a perfect 300 game, winner of the Virginia state championship (bowling) and named to the Danville Bowler's Hall of Fame. He was a senior ambassador for Caswell Pines Golf Club. He enjoyed flying his own plane and was a collector of John Deere Tractors.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Hines Vernon of the home; three daughters, Claudia V. Smith of Yanceyville, N.C., Ellen V. Robertson of Milton, N.C, and Amy V. De La Cruz Munoz of Miami Springs, Fla.; three sons, Bruce Vernon of Columbus, Ohio, David Vernon of Danville, and Billy Vernon of Milton, N.C.; two brothers, Harvey Vernon of Milton, and Marshall Vernon of Brunswick, Ga.; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by three brothers Clay Vernon Jr., Walter Vernon and Bobby Vernon.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at New Hope United Methodist Church with the Rev. Floyd R. Morrow officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at New Hope United Methodist Church, Longs Mill Road, and at other times at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to New Hope United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Cleve Daniel, 1079 Long's Mill Road, Blanch, N.C. 27212.

Kenneth Younger
GRETNA, Va. - Kenneth "Kent" Younger, 52, of 2385 Zion Road, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 29, 1946, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Jordie Younger and Pauline Younger, who survives.
Prior to his retirement on disability, he was employed by Southside Timber Co. in Chatham and K&G Taxi Service.
In addition to his mother of Chatham, he is survived by his wife, Gracie P. Younger of the residence; one daughter, Taneka Callands of Gretna; two step-children, Vernon Pannell and Joyce Pannell, both of Gretna; three brothers, Clyde Younger, Jodie Younger and Alfonza Younger, all of Chatham; and five sisters, Geneva Glass of Gretna, Linda Saunders of Lynchburg, and Patricia Younger, Brenda Younger and Joyce Scates, all of Chatham.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Miller Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hubert White officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Miller Funeral Home and at other times as the residence.
Jim Cook
DANVILLE, Va. - James "Jim" Thomas Cook Sr., 48, of 4408 Whitmell School Road, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at his residence.
Born Sept. 28, 1950, in Pelham, N.C., he was the son of Gilbert Giles Cook Sr. and Shirley Louise Owens Cook, who survives.
He was married
to Marion Andrews Cook, who survives.
He was a retired master sergeant in the United States Air Force, serving in the Persian Gulf War. He was owner and operator of Cook's Custom Welding. He was a member of Hollywood Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother and wife, survivors include one daughter, Laura Michelle Cook of the residence; two sons, James T. "Jimmy" Cook Jr. of the residence and John Gilbert Cook; three brothers, Johnny L. Cook and Gilbert G. "Cookie" Cook Jr., both of Danville and Jerry W. Cook of Eden, N.C.; two sisters, Louise C. Goodman and Linda C. Taylor, both of Danville; and one grandchild.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Haywood Alcorn and the Rev. Samuel Greeson officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery with military honors conducted by the Honor Guard of the American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Bessie Goode
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Bessie Jones Goode, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, in Manhattan, N.Y.
Born Jan. 25, 1945, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Lawson Jones Sr. who predeceased her and Mildred Hood Jones, who survives.
She was educated in Pittsylvania County's public schools where she graduated with honors from Southside High School, Blairs, Va. in 1964. She was a graduate of Smith-Madden Business College, Richmond, Va. In 1966, she moved to Brooklyn, where she was employed with Bell Atlantic Telephone Company, Inc. After 30 years of employment, she retired as managerial supervisor.
She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Brooklyn, where she was the church secretary, a member of the Trustee Board, and Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of many civic, professional clubs and other church organizations.
In addition to her mother of Hampton, Va., survivors include one sister Doris Jones Farmer of Hampton, Va.; and one brother, Alvin Jones of Danville, Va.
She was predeceased by one son; and two brothers, Lawson Jones Jr. and Andrew Jones.
A funeral will be held 10 a.m. Friday at New Hope Baptist Church in Brooklyn. Burial will be in New York.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at House of Hills, Inc. Funeral Home, 1000 St. John's Place, Brooklyn, N.Y. and at other times at the residence of her aunt, Tina M.

Wallace Ferrell Sr.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Wallace Eugene Ferrell Sr., formerly of Halifax County, Va., died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, in Germantown Nursing Home.
Born Sept. 23, 1921, in Halifax County, he was the son of Algie Ferrell and Fannie Lee Ferrell.
He was married
to Kate Fisher, who predeceased him.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and was of the Baptist faith.
He was predeceased by three sisters, Virginia Wooden, Nannie Mayo and Evelyn Mayo; and two brothers, Willie Loyd Ferrell and Tommy Ferrell.
Survivors include one son, Wallace Ferrell Jr., of the residence, two stepsons, Ronald L. Fisher of the residence and Calvin Fisher of Philadelphia; one stepdaughter, Jackie Fisher of Philadelphia; four sisters, Edna L. Howerton of Danville, Va., Hallie B. Jackson and Elsie L. Anderson, both of South Boston, Va., and Adell Glass of Vernon Hill, Va.; one brother, Alexander Roy Ferrell of Lanham, Md.; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Mountain Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Arthur E. Crews officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of L.C. Glass, Vernon Hill.

Willard Ferrell
HIGHLAND SPRINGS, Va. - Willard C. Ferrell, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999.
He was married
to Dixie A. Ferrell, who survives.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Michael S. Ferrell Sr.; one daughter, Diane Broomhall; one brother, Henry Ferrell of Danville; three sisters, Edith Herchik of Richmond, and Alma Mahan and Mickey Moorefield, both of Danville; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are private with arrangements by the Cremation Society of Virginia.
Nat Travis
DANVILLE, Va. - Nat Wesley Travis, 88, of 538 Beech Tree Court, died Tuesday afternoon March 2, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health.
Mr. Travis was born in Danville on Jauary 13, 1911, a son of the late Nat Wesley Travis Sr. and Nonie Mays Travis.
Mr. Travis was predeceased by his wife, Thelma Booth Travis.
Mr. Travis had spent most of his life in Danville where he went to the local high school, he worked at Dan River Inc., for 42 years before retiring at the age of 65 as a supervisor for several departments. After retiring, he worked as a consultant for Dan River and later was the credit manager at Wimmer & Wimmer for five years. He was a member of Riveroak Church of God.
Survivors include one daughter, Marie Travis Martin of Danville; one son, Clyde David Travis of Danville; one sister, Inez Carter Stone of Pisgah, Alabama; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He also leaves Edith Burch who lovingly filled the empty space in his heart.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Tim Nuckles, the Rev. Jackie Poe and the Rev. Ray Wiggs officiating.
The family will be at the residence of his daughter, Marie Martin, 530 Beech Tree Court in Oak Hills.

Bessie Black
DANVILLE, Va. - Bessie Thelma Brown Black, 83, 53 Augusta Ave., died Thursday morning, March 4, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 5, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Eugene Brown and Beulah Moss Brown.
She was married
to Olin Oliver Black, who predeceased her in May 1969.
She was retired from Dan River Inc. where she worked in 4-B Weave. She was a member of The Tabernacle.
Survivors include three daughters, Sandra Taylor and Cynthia Roberts, both of Danville, and Susan Sage of Greensboro, N.C.; four brothers, Hebert Brown, Samuel Brown, Eugene Brown and William Brown, all of Danville; four sisters, Lena Aralios of Millington, Tenn., Adele Sipe of Allentown, Pa., Mae Collins and Juanita Holley, both of Danville; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition, she was predeceased by one son, Edward Lee Black; and two sisters, Virginia Buckner and Laura Cain.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at The Tabernacle with the Rev. Lamarr Mooneyham and the Rev. R. J. Barber Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Garden.
