Janie Covington
NATHALIE, Va. - Janie Lea Covington, 58, of 1085 Joe Crews Trail, died Thursday, March 3, 1999, at the Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born in Halifax County on Apr. 10, 1940, she was the daughter of Tucker Lee Covington and Lillie Ashby Covington.
She is survived by two sons, James Burl Limerick Jr. of Virgilina and Kenneth Wayne Limerick of Nathalie; two sisters, Virginia Kelly of Hurt and Kathy Jones of Nathalie; three brothers, Luther Singleton of Altavista, James Covington of Tampa, Fla., and John Raymond Covington of Nathalie.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in the Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James E. Griffin officiating. Burial will take place in Childrey Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home 7-8:30 p.m. today and at other times at the residence.
Ida Fitzgerald
CHATHAM, Va. - Ida Mae Fitzgerald, 63, of 326 E. Rittenhoust St., Philadelphia, Pa., formerly of Rt. 5, Chatham, Va., died Tuesday, March 2, 1999 in the Sacred Heart Nursing Home, Philadelphia.
Born in Pittsylvania County, Va. on Sept. 7, 1935, she was a daughter of Robert Womack and Viola Fitzgerald Womack. She was employed with the U.S. government, and was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by one brother, Philip Fitzgerald, of Washington, D.C.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, with the Rev. Hubert White officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Baptist Church cemetery.
Leon Golden
WILLOW STREET, Pa. - Leon Jackson "Jack" Golden, 72, of 113 Elk Lane, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at his residence.
Born Dec. 14, 1926, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Decatur Golden and Lelia Lemons Golden.
He was married
Nov. 22, 1952, to Louise Reaves Golden, who survives.
He was a graduate of George Washington High School and was a member of the 1944 state championship football team. He was a graduate of Elon College in North Carolina and taught high school. He received the Salesman of the Year award with the Commonwealth Security Systems of Lancaster, Pa. in 1980 and Security Consultant of the Year Award in 1981. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 7294 and a veteran of World War II serving the United States Navy. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, Pennsylvania Chapter No. 80.
In addition to his wife of Willow Street survivors include two sons, Thomas R. Golden of Willow Street and Steven W Golden of Charlottesville, Va.; one sister, Helen G. Ware of Danville, Va.; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, Danville, with the Rev. David Henry officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 10 a.m. Saturday at the chapel and at other times at the residence of Helen Ware, 134 Rosedale Court, Danville.
Alfred Haraway
DANVILLE, Va. - Alfred W. Haraway, 98, of 236 Rocklawn Ave., died Thursday, March 4, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 26, 1900, in Danville, he was the son of Samuel Haraway and Olivia Hunt Haraway.
He was married
to Idella Sparks Haraway who predeceased him in 1955, and later to Gertrude Shelton Haraway who predeceased him in 1995.
He was a member of Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was a former employee of the Danville post office and later retired from Building Contractors, Inc. after 50 years of service.
Survivors include one son, Douglas R. Haraway of Danville; one sister, Verna Price of Danville; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his son, 113 Martindale Drive.
Helen Harris
DANVILLE, Va. - Helen Crews Harris, 91, of 500 Rison St., died Monday, March 1, 1999, in Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 17, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charles Henry Crews and Susie Love Crews King.
She was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, Betts Street, and was a retired from People's Drug Store.
Survivors include three sons, Richard H. Harris of Cincinnati, James E. Haris III of Hackensack, N.J., and Earle G. Harris of Atlanta, Ga.; one daughter, Jacqueline J. Young of Somerset, N.J.; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Cecil Bridgeford officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
A viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. today at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
Elizabeth Land
DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth Marshall Land, 82, of 201 Haymore St., died Thursday, March 4, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center after declining in health for two years.
Born Nov. 12, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Elijah D. Marshall and Mamie Hall Marshall.
She was married
April 1935, to the Rev. James Howard Land, who predeceased her Jan. 24, 1977.
She lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. She retired from Dan River Inc., Riverside Division, after 45 years as a weaver. She was a charter member of Glen Hill Baptist Church where she was very active until her decline in health.
Survivors include three sisters Danie M. Johnson of Durham, N.C., Etta M. Long of Fort Washington, Md., and Irene M. Custer of Stevensonville, Md.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Harry E. Marshall and Joel Marshall.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Glen Hill Baptist Church in the Mountain Hill Community with the Rev. Donald Mahan and the Rev. Bill Soyars officiating. Burial will be at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence.
Bessie Nelson
GLENBURNE, Md. - Bessie Pritchett Nelson, 80, of Glenburne, Md., died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at her residence.
Born March 25, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Claude Pritchett Sr. and Mary Elliott Pritchett.
She was married
to John Neslon Sr., who predeceased her.
She is survived by one stepson, John Nelson Jr., of Maryland; three sisters, Doris P. McIntyre, Helen Maxine P. Hereford, and Mary Ann P. Sutzer, all of Danville, Va; and two brothers, Charles Pritchett Sr. and Selvin Pritchett, both of Danville, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at the Camp Grove Baptist Church. Interment
will follow at Oak Hills cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Sherby Freeman at 432 Camp St.

Susie Newbill
HALIFAX, Va. - Susie Ellen Newbill, 101, 1246 Winns Creek Rd., died Thursday, Mar. 4, 1999, at the Twin Oakes Nursing Home.
Born in Halifax County on Apr. 6, 1897, she was the daughter of Booker Epps and Nannie Epps.
She was married
to Ira Newbill, who predeceased her. She was a member of Winns Creek Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Elva Crews of Halifax; two granddaughters; four great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Winns Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Welch officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of her granddaughter, Betty M. Conner, 1247 Winns Creek Rd.

Myrtle Taylor
DANVILLE, Va. - Myrtle Robertson Taylor, 78, of 2900 Mount Cross Road died Thursday, March 4, 1999, at the Beverly Health Care Center, Martinsville, after eight years of declining health.
Born in Pittsylvania County on March 21, 1920, she was the daughter of Silas Green Robertson and Dennie Neal Robertson.
She was married
to James Irvin Taylor who predeceased her Jue 5, 1982. She had lived her entire life in Danville and was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by two daughters, Patsy Bowman of Danville and Margie Black of Cherryville, N.C.; three sons, Jerry Taylor of Dry Fork, Larry Taylor of Danville, and Jimmy Taylor of Lynchburg; two brothers, George Robertson and Hugh Robertson, both of Ringgold; 16 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Hussey officiating. Interment
will be in the Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and at other times at the residence.
Nat Travis
DANVILLE, Va. - Nat Wesley Travis, 88, of 538 Beech Tree Court, died Tuesday afternoon March 2, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health.
Mr. Travis was born in Danville on Jauary 13, 1911, a son of the late Nat Wesley Travis Sr. and Nonie Mays Travis.
Mr. Travis was predeceased by his wife, Thelma Booth Travis.
Mr. Travis had spent most of his life in Danville where he went to the local high school, he worked at Dan River Inc., for 42 years before retiring at the age of 65 as a supervisor for several departments. After retiring, he worked as a consultant for Dan River and later was the credit manager at Wimmer & Wimmer for five years. He was a member of Riveroak Church of God.
Survivors include one daughter, Marie Travis Martin of Danville; one son, Clyde David Travis of Danville; one sister, Inez Carter Stone of Pisgah, Alabama; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He also leaves Edith Burch who lovingly filled the empty space in his heart.
Graveside funeral services were conducted Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Tim Nuckles, the Rev. Jackie Poe and the Rev. Ray Wiggs officiating.
The family will be at the residence of his daughter, Marie Martin, 530 Beech Tree Court in Oak Hills.
Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
