Benjamin Tuck
VIRGILINA, Va. - Benjamin Pool Tuck, Jr., 72, of 4109 Wilson Road, died Thursday, Mar. 4, 1999, at his home.
Born on Dec. 8, 1926, in Halifax County, he was the son of Benjamin P. Tuck Sr. and Cleo Gravitt Tuck. He was a Navy veteran and retired from J.P. Stevens where he worked as a maintenance worker. He was also a member of Aarons Creek Baptist Church and the American Legion Post 337.
He is survived by his wife, Cecil Wilson Tuck of the residence; two sons, Wilson Lane Tuck and William Brann Tuck Sr., both of Virgilina; two daughters, Wanda Tuck Day of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Winnie B. Tuck of Davidson, N.C.; one brother, James Eli Tuck of Salado, Texas; three sisters, Lou Tuck High of Petersburg, Eva Tuck Conduff of Roanoke, and Lottie Tuck Nunn of Virgilina; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Graham Tuck; and one sister, Truman Tuck Swoope.
The family will recieve friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Brooks Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Lane Tuck, 4103 Wilson Rd.
Funeral services will be held at the Brooks Funeral Home Chapel 2 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Jack Stewart and the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Burial will take place in the Virgilina cemetery.
James Tucker
HALIFAX, Va. - James Edward Tucker, 76, of 6012 Chatham Road, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at Ashland Convalescent Center in Ashland.
He was born June 25, 1922, in Halifax County.
He was married
to Louise Coleman, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Orbie Roberts of Hyattsville, Md., and Linda Tucker of Seabrook, Md.; three sons, James Tucker of Springdale, Md., Joseph Tucker of Baltimore, Md. and Gregory Tucker of York, Pa.; one sister, Lucille Lewis of Halifax; two brothers, Johnnie Tucker of Yonkers, N.Y. and Harold Tucker of Washington, D.C.; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church Meadsville, Nathalie, with the Rev. Robert Wimbush officiating. Burial will be in County Line Baptist Church cemetery. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.
The family will receive friends noon-1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church and at other times at the residence.

Ruby Bishop
CHATHAM, Va. - Ruby Elizabeth Harr Bishop, 85, of 2561 Chalk Level Road, died Friday, March 5, 1999, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born June 16, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George Walter Haar and Mary Etta Butcher Haar.
She was married
to Roy Leon Bishop, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Chatham Baptist Church and was employed at Dan River, Inc. for 32 years.
Survivors include one daughter, Betsy B. Hankins and her husband, Willard L. Hankins of Chatham; one sister, Helen H. Duffy of Durham, N.C.; one grandson, Steven L. Hankins of West Chester, Ohio; three granddaughters, Beth H. Anderson of Roanoke, Laura H. Adcock and Betsy Lynne Hankins, both of Chatham; three great-grandsons, Benjamin Phillip Anderson, Jordan Douglas Anderson and Wiliam Bishop Anderson, all of Roanoke; one great-granddaughter, Katherine Elizabeth Hankins of West Chester, Ohio; and one great-grandson, Nathan Joseph Hankins of West Chester, Ohio.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, George W. Haar and Edward E. Haar; and a sister, Mary H. Owen.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Chatham Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Macon officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery, Danville.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Bessie Black
DANVILLE, Va. - Bessie Thelma Brown Black, 83, 53 Augusta Ave., died Thursday morning, March 4, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 5, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Eugene Brown and Beulah Moss Brown.
She was married
to Olin Oliver Black, who predeceased her in May 1969.
She was retired from Dan River Inc. where she worked in 4-B Weave. She was a member of The Tabernacle.
Survivors include three daughters, Sandra Taylor and Cynthia Roberts, both of Danville, and Susan Sage of Greensboro, N.C.; four brothers, Hebert Brown, Samuel Brown, Eugene Brown and William Brown, all of Danville; four sisters, Lena Aralios of Millington, Tenn., Adele Sipe of Allentown, Pa., Mae Collins and Juanita Holley, both of Danville; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition, she was predeceased by one son, Edward Lee Black; and two sisters, Virginia Buckner and Laura Cain.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at The Tabernacle with the Rev. Lamarr Mooneyham and the Rev. R. J. Barber Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Garden.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Sandra Taylor, 1228 Rosemary Lane.
Sadie Gilliland
DANVILLE, Va. - Sadie Graham Gilliland, 84, of 379 Gemstone Lane, died at her residence, Friday afternoon March 5, 1999.
Mrs. Gilliland was born in Schoolfield on May 8, 1914, a daughter of the late Allie L. Graham and Eliza Sell Graham.
She was predeceased by her husband, Leo Gilliland, who died Feb. 7. 1981.
Mrs. Gilliland had spent most of her life in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County. She worked at Dan River, Inc. for 44 1/2 years before retiring. She was a member of Brosville United Methodist Church, the Dan River Retiree Workers Club, and the Senior Citizens.
She is survived by two daughters, Ramona Gravett and son-in-law, William A. Gravett of Greensboro, N.C., and Constance Lane and son-in-law, John H. Lane of Newport News, one stepdaughter; Vivian Petty of Richmond, and three stepsons, Ronald Gilliland, Lionel Gilliland and J.B. Gilliland, all of Goldston, N.C.; and one sister, Virginia Mae Phillips of Asheville, N.C., and one brother, Leonard Graham of Gloucester and four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, 12 step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by four brothers.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Richard McDowell and the Rev. Daryl Joyce. Entombment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 7-8:30 p.m., and at other times at the residence.

Leon Golden
WILLOW STREET, Pa. - Leon Jackson "Jack" Golden, 72, of 113 Elk Lane, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at his residence.
Born Dec. 14, 1926, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Decatur Golden and Lelia Lemons Golden.
He was married
Nov. 22, 1952, to Louise Reaves Golden, who survives.
He was a graduate of George Washington High School and was a member of the 1944 state championship football team. He was a graduate of Elon College in North Carolina and taught high school. He received the Salesman of the Year award with the Commonwealth Security Systems of Lancaster, Pa. in 1980 and Security Consultant of the Year Award in 1981. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 7294 and a veteran of World War II serving the United States Navy. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, Pennsylvania Chapter No. 80.
In addition to his wife of Willow Street survivors include two sons, Thomas R. Golden of Willow Street and Steven W Golden of Charlottesville, Va.; one sister, Helen G. Ware of Danville, Va.; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, Danville, with the Rev. David Henry officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 10 a.m. today at the chapel and at other times at the residence of Helen Ware, 134 Rosedale Court, Danville.
Alfred Haraway
DANVILLE, Va. - Alfred W. Haraway, 98, of 236 Rocklawn Ave., died Thursday, March 4, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 26, 1900, in Danville, he was the son of Samuel Haraway and Olivia Hunt Haraway.
He was married
to Idella Sparks Haraway who predeceased him in 1955, and later to Gertrude Shelton Haraway who predeceased him in 1995.
He was a member of Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was a former employee of the Danville post office and was also a retired building contractor, having been in business for 50 years.
Survivors include one son, Douglas R. Haraway of Danville; one sister, Verna Price of Danville; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Donald Haraway; three brothers, Marvin Haraway, Mason Haraway, and Junie Haraway; and a sister, Florine Evans.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son, 113 Martindale Drive.
Elizabeth Land
DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth Marshall Land, 82, of 201 Haymore St., died Thursday, March 4, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center after declining in health for two years.
Born Nov. 12, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Elijah D. Marshall and Mamie Hall Marshall.
She was married
April 1935, to the Rev. James Howard Land, who predeceased her Jan. 24, 1977.
She lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. She retired from Dan River Inc., Riverside Division, after 45 years as a weaver. She was a charter member of Glen Hill Baptist Church where she was very active until her decline in health.
Survivors include three sisters Danie M. Johnson of Durham, N.C., Etta M. Long of Fort Washington, Md., and Irene M. Custer of Stevensonville, Md.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Harry E. Marshall and Joel Marshall.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at the Glen Hill Baptist Church in the Mountain Hill Community with the Rev. Donald Mahan and the Rev. Bill Soyars officiating. Burial will be at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Marvin Neal
DANVILLE, Va. - Marvin Milton Neal, 95, formerly of 1840 Fall Creek Drive, died Friday, March 5, 1999, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home. He had been in declining health for five years and a resident of Roman Eagle for a year.
Born April 10, 1903, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Elijah Neal and Nannie King Neal.
He lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County, where he was a retired construction worker and farmer. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was married
in 1921 to Clara Lee Patterson Neal.
In addition to his wife, of Danville, survivors include five daughters, Lucy N. Williams of Barstow, Calif., Verler N. Murphy of Spencer, Nellie N. Wallace, Mamie N. Pruitt, and Nannie N. Nevins, all of Danville; four sons, Harold Neal of Gladys, Avery Neal and Jack Neal, both of Danville, and Johnny Neal of Ringgold; a sister, Betty N. Dalton of Danville; 27 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from the graveside at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Michael J. Wiles officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
