HALIFAX, Va. - Evelyn Pettus, 74, of Halifax, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999, in Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston.
She was born Feb. 6, 1925, in Halifax County.
Survivors include one son, James Pettus of Alexandria; two sisters, Cynthia Chappell of Alexandria and Bessie Williams of Richmond; two brothers, Abner Coleman of Albany, N.Y., and John Coleman of Scottsburg; a granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Piney Grove Baptist Church in Scottsburg with the Rev. Whitfield Scott officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Arthur Royal
CHATHAM, Va. - Arthur Royal, 86, of 1041 Mount Zion Church Road, died Thursday, March 4, 1999, in The Memorial Hospital of Martinsville-Henry County.
Born Feb. 23, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Winford Royal and Barbara Lampkin Royal.
Before he retired he was a self-employed farmer. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Sue Royal of Chatham; one son, Hobert Royal of Danville; three daughters, Susie Fuller and Clara Clements, both of Chatham, and Jean Jones of Danville; two brothers, Harry Royal of Philadelphia, Pa., and Rodger Royal of Chatham; five sisters, Stella Mitchell, Catherine Mitchell, Isabell Keen, Ida Terry and English Thomas, all of Chatham; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Clyde Arthur Royal; a sister, Callie James; and five brothers, Gilbert Royal, Winnon Royal, Harry Royal, Leonard Royal and William Royal.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday from Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Damon Hairston officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Clara Clements at 610 Mount Zion Church Road.

Myrtle Taylor
DANVILLE, Va. - Myrtle Robertson Taylor, 78, of 2900 Mount Cross Road died Thursday, March 4, 1999, at the Beverly Health Care Center, Martinsville, after eight years of declining health.
Born in Pittsylvania County on March 21, 1920, she was the daughter of Silas Green Robertson and Dennie Neal Robertson.
She was married
to James Irvin Taylor who predeceased her Jue 5, 1982. She had lived her entire life in Danville and was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by two daughters, Patsy Bowman of Danville and Margie Black of Cherryville, N.C.; three sons, Jerry Taylor of Dry Fork, Larry Taylor of Danville, and Jimmy Taylor of Lynchburg; two brothers, George Robertson and Hugh Robertson, both of Ringgold; 16 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. today in the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Hussey officiating. Interment
will be in the Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Ruby Bishop
CHATHAM, Va. - Ruby Elizabeth Haar Bishop, 85, died Friday, March 5, 1999, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born June 6, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George Walter Haar and Mary Etta Butcher Haar.
She was married
to Roy Leon Bishop, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Chatham Baptist Church and was employed at Dan River, Inc. for 32 years.
Survivors include one daughter, Betsy B. Hankins and her husband Willard L. Hankins of Chatham; one sister, Helen H. Duffy of Durham, N.C.; one grandson, Steven L. Hankins of West Chester, Ohio; three granddaughters, Beth H. Anderson of Roanoke, Laura H. Adcock and Betsy Lynne Hankins, both of Chatham; three great-grandsons, Benjamin Phillip Anderson, Jordan Douglas Anderson and Wiliam Bishop Anderson, all of Roanoke; one great-granddaughter, Katherine Elizabeth Hankins of West Chester, Ohio; and one great-grandson, Nathan Joseph Hankins of West Chester, Ohio.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, George W. Haar and Edward E. Haar; and a sister, Mary H. Owen.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Chatham Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Macon officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery, Danville.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 2561 Chalk Level Road.

Bessie Black
DANVILLE, Va.--Bessie Thelma Brown Black, 83, of 53 August Ave., died Thursday morning, March 4, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 5, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Eugene Brown and Beulah Moss Brown.
She was married
to Olin Oliver Black, who predeceased her in May 1970.
She was retired from Dan River Inc. where she worked in 4-B Weave. She was a member of The Tabernacle.
Survivors include three daughters, Sandra Taylor and Cynthia Roberts, both of Danville, and Susan Sage of Greensboro, N.C.; four brothers, Herbert Brown, Samuel Brown, Eugene Brown and William Brown, all of Danville; four sisters, Lena Aralios of Millington, Tenn., Adele Sipe of Allentown, Pa., Mae Collins and Juanita Holley, both of Danville; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition, she was predeceased by one son, Edward Lee Black; and two sisters, Virginia Buckner and Laura Cain.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at The Tabernacle with the Rev. Lamarr Mooneyham and the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Garden.

Delma Denny
DANVILLE, Va. - Delma Edna Clayton Denny, 87, of 171 Womack Blvd., Yanceyville, died Friday, March 5, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 30, 1911 in Person County, N.C., she was the daughter of Clifton Clayton and Callie Whitfield Clayton.
She was married
to Robert Ellis Denny Sr. who predeceased her in September 1986.
She was retired from Taylor Heights Nursing Home and was a homemaker.
She was a member of Leasburg United Methodist Church for 72 years.
Survivors include three daughters, Ester D. Fulcher of Yanceyville, N.C., Ella D. Hill of Danville and Elizabeth D. Thomas of Roanoke; two sons, Ellis Denny Jr. and Ernest Denny, both of Yanceyville a brother, Talmadge Clayton of Bridgewater, 11 grandchildren and 17 greatgrandchildren.
She is predeceased by a sister, Ilene Thompson.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Leasburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Van Spivey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 7-8:30 p.m. at Marley Funeral Home, Yanceyville, N.C., and other times at the residence.
Andres Garcia
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Andres Junior Garcia, 8 months, of 126 Cedar Place, Apt. B, Cedar Terrace Apts., died Friday, March 5, 1999, at University of Virginia Hospital.
Born June 4, 1998, in Danville, he was the son of Andres Garcia and Maria Agustin Garcia, who survive.
Other survivors include four brothers, Jose Luis Garcia, Heriberto Garcia, Marcos Antonio Garcia and Edgar Garcia of the residence; one sister, Lorena Garcia of the residence; and both sets of maternal and paternal grandparents who reside in Mexico.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. David McGuire officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Burial Park.
The family will friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Barker Funeral Home, 2025 N. Main St., Danville and at other times at the residence.
Leslie Giles
DANVILLE, Va. - Leslie Lewis Giles, 83, of 248 Oakwood Circle, died Friday, March 5, 1999, at his residence.
Born Jan. 11, 1916, in Chatham, Va., he is the son of John Lewis Giles and Mary Elizabeth DeMott Giles.
He was married
to Virginia Snead Giles, who predeceased him Aug. 28, 1995.
He lived most of his life in Danville and was the owner/operator of Giles Salvage for 40 years. He had also worked for Southern Railroad.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Laird-Wooding Sunday School Class and a past member of the Board of Deacons.
He was also a member of the Danville Golf Club and the American Legion. He was an avid flower and vegetable gardner, and was very generous in sharing his harvest with neighbors and friends.
In addition, he was a World War II Air Force veteran and flew 30 missions with the Eighth Air Force over Germany.
Survivors include a daughter, Lynn G. Jarrett, a son-in-law Hamilton Jarrett III and two grandsons, Matthew Jarrett and Wilson Jarrett, all of Raleigh, N.C.; three brothers, Glenn Giles of Danville, Ronald Giles of Altavista and Donald Giles of Lynchburg; three sisters, Virginia Moran of Alexandria, Mary Jessie of Chatham and Nancy Robertson of Roanoke.
He was predeceased by a brother, Larry Giles.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jack Heinsohn Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Vivian Guill
BLAIRS, Va. - Vivian Lee Hodnett Guill, 88, of 1389 Lawless Creek Rd., died Saturday, March 6, 1999, at her residence.
Born Jan. 12, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Daniel Hodnett and Carrie Hodnett.
She was married
to James David Guill Sr., who survives.
She lived her entire life in the Blairs community and was a member of the Blairs Baptist Church.
Other survivors include three sons, James David Guill Jr. of Winston Salem, N.C., Willey Thomas "Buck" Guill of Danville, and Roy Glen Guill of Blairs; a daughter, Venice Ann Rochii of Blairs; a brother, Edward Hodnett of Danville and a sister, Lottie Guill of Blairs.
