Laura Lounderman
DANVILLE, Va. - Laura T. Lounderman, 78, 154 Grace St., died Monday, March 8, 1999, at her residence.
Born June 15, 1920, in Danville, she was the daughter of John Swann and Elizabeth J. Swann.
She was a retired laborer of Southern Processors, Inc. She was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Willie W. Tucker of Danville; four daughters, Dorothy Richards of Woodbridge, Laura Cabell and Patricia Clements, both of Danville, and Brenda Robinson of Vandenburg Air Force Base, Calif.; two step-sons, Sam Langley and Tommy Langley, both of New York; 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Liberty Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Jasper Watkins officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
A viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. today at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Richard Moore
DANVILLE, Va. - Richard L. Moore, of 224 Kinzer Ave., died Tuesday, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 27, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Sylvester Moore and Elsie Moore.
He was married
to Minnie Louise Grant Moore, who survives.
He was retired from Southern Processors, Inc. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army's tank corps. He was also a member of The Tabernacle, Danville React and Disabled American Veterans.
In addition to the wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Ronald Moore of Virginia Beach; one brother, Harold Moore of Danville; two sisters, Margaret Warren of Danville and Doris Loftis of Pelham, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Garden Chapel with the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr. officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Townes Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.
Margaret Pettigrew
DANVILLE, Va. - Margaret Wingo Pettigrew, 89, 613 Mowbray Arch, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after 16 years of declining health.
Born Sept. 2, 1909, in Spartanburg, S.C., she was the daughter of Joseph Stuart Wingo and Minnie McMillan Wingo.
She had lived most of her life in Spartanburg, S.C. She lived in Winston Salem, N.C. for seven years and in Danville since 1978. She was retired from the Department of Public Welfare where she had worked as a social worker for 37 years. Mrs. Pettigrew was a member of the West Main Baptist Church. On June 6, 1934, she married
to Howell P. Pettigrew who died September 13, 1979.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy P. Bebeau and Frederick A. Bebeau, both of the residence; one grandson, James F. Bebeau and wife, Kimberly B. Bebeau of Danville; and one sister, Mary Stuart Knight of Irvine, Calif.
She was predeceased by four sisters, Agnes W. Rollins, Edna W. Cudd, Selma G. Wingo and Pauline W. Workman.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Spartanburg, S.C.

Roscoe Simpson
GRETNA, Va. - Roscoe Simpson, 74, of 620 Owens Mill Road, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Oct. 20, 1924, in West Virginia, he was the son of the late Moman William Simpson and Sagasta Keesee Simpson.
Simpson was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of American Legion Post No. 232, and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 46. He was the retired owner of Simpson's Egg Farm and was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife, Lavona Dalton Simpson of the residence; three daughters, Brenda S. East and Lisa C. Mayhew, both of Gretna, and Sherry S. Kessel of Roanoke; three brothers, Carroll Simpson and Lacy Simpson, both of Gretna, and Gerald Simpson of Salem; one sister, Elaine Worley of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Catina E. Kelly and Jessica Crews, both of Gretna, and Amanda E. Keatts of Rustburg; one great-grandson Cody Taylor of Gretna; and a special relative Floyd Dalton of Gretna.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, March 12, 1999, at Weatherford Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Raymond Goad and Elder Marvin Brunfield. Burial with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4165 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 46 will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends Thursday, 7-8:30 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Buddy Slaughter
ROANOKE, Va. - Joseph Herbert (Buddy) Slaughter, 55, of 2702 Courtland Road, died suddenly Monday, March 8, 1999, at his residence.
Born Aug. 12, 1943, in Danville, he was the son of Roland Edward Slaughter who predeceased and Freida Beachel, who survives.
He had lived most of his life in Pittsylvania County. He was a graduate of Dan River High School and Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in Atlanta. He was employed by New York Carpet World prior to retiring for health reasons and moved to Roanoke to live the past four years. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
In addition to his mother of San Diego, Calif., survivors include one son, Joseph H. (Joey) Slaughter of Ringgold; one daughter, Margaret S. McDaniel of Danville; one brother, Roland E. (Butch) Slaughter Jr. of Ringgold, two sisters, Sandra S. Zywokarte of Washington, D.C. and Morganne S. Bennett of Falls Church; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. William L. Underwood officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son, 340 Countryside Court, Ringgold.
Annie Whitt
ALTON, Va. - Annie Lois Long Whitt, 98, of 17054 Philpott Road, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston.
Born Nov. 17, 1900, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of George Morgan Long and Mamie Dale Satterfield Long.
She was married
to Trupie Alfred Whitt, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and a homemaker.
Survivors include three sons, Nelson Whitt of Ringgold, Richard Whitt of Alton, and Marvin Whitt of Rocky Mount; two daughters, Ethel Mae Horn of Burlington, N.C., and Pearl Griffin and Ringgold; two brothers, William "Bob" Long of Turberville, and Harry Long of South Boston; four sisters, Mildred Buckner and Virginia Satterfield, both of Alton; Daisey Satterfield of Halifax, and Lillian Satterfield of South Boston; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and two great-great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Calvary United Methodist Church cemetery.

Clifton Apple
NAPLES, Fla. - Clifton R. Apple, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999.
Born in Danville, Va., he was the son of Mary Apple.
He was married
to Kathleen Apple, who survives.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He lived in New Jersey and northern Virginia before moving to Naples in 1981. He retired after 30 years of service in the federal government.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Richard Apple and Philip Apple, both of northern Virginia; two sisters, Torlonia Crouch of Danville and Shelvie Hamlett of Midland, Va.; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Bertry Apple and Ezra Apple.
A funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Williams Catholic Church, 950 Seagate Drive, with Father Joseph Stearns officiating.
Burial will be 10 a.m. April 6 at Arlington National cemetery, Arlington, Va.
William "Bill" Hall
BOWMANVILLE, ONTARIO - William H. "Bill" Hall, 87, of Lakeridge Health, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at his residence.
Born Dec. 13, 1912, in Witt, Va., he was the son of William and Madia Hall.
He was married
to May Dobson Williams, who predeceased him.
Survivors include two sons, Kenneth "Bill" Hall of New Orleans and Edward Hall and his wife Elaine of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Africa; one daughter, Barbara and her husband Nigel Allen of Virginia; two brothers, Pete Hall and Gene Milam; two sisters, Eleanor Foster and Nancy Hardy; and four grandchildren, Tasha Allen and Stacey Allen and Michelle Hall and Shawn Hall.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased a brother, Everett Hall and a sister, Clarice Hall.
The family will receive friends 9-11 a.m. today at Morris Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral will be held at the funeral home 11 a.m. today. Cremation will be at Thornton Crematorium with interment of ashes at Orono cemetery.

William Harris
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - William Hodnett "Bill" Harris, 67, of 521 Raven Road, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, at Chesapeake General Hospital.
Born July 2, 1931, in Halifax County, he was the son of Samuel Hodnett Harris and Alice Wilborn Harris.
He was married
to Jacquelyn "Jackie" Loftis Harris, who survives.
He was a retired maintenance supervisor at St. Brides Correctional Facility. He was a member of Cava Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four sons, David Carroll Harris of Vernon Hill, John William Harris of Sutherlin, Mark Hodnett Harris and William "Bill" Phillip Harris, both of Chesapeake; one daughter, Allyce Elizabeth "Beth" Pollard of Chesapeake; three brothers, James Conway Harris of Halifax, and Charles Thomas Harris and Marshall B. Harris, both of South Boston; one sister, Margaret Harbin of York, S.C.; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Ruby Harville
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruby N. Harville, 77, formerly of 220 Mount Olivet Lane, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born April 10, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charlie Norton and Ida Mills Norton.
She was married
Sept. 14, 1940, to William Robert Harville, who predeceased her March 4, 1987.
Mrs. Harville lived most of her life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County area where prior to her retirement she was employed with Dan River Inc. as a weaver. Mrs. Harville was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church, and was a member of the Widow's Club of the church, and a member of the Women's Missionary Circle No. 4, the Chapel Bible Class and the Dan River Retirement Organization.
Survivors include three daughters, Linda H. Yeatts, Betty H. Boswell and Colene H. Bryant, all of Danville; three son-in-laws, Carl T. Yeatts, Archie C. Boswell Jr. and Joel L. Bryant, all of Danville; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Harville was predeceased by two brothers and one sister.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks officiating. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
