Mary Hazelwood
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Gibbs Strader Hazelwood, 52, of 77 Schoolfield Drive, died early Thursday morning, March 11, 1999, at her residence.
Born May 5, 1946, in Danville, she was the daughter of Robert Archie Gibbs and Jennie Collins Gibbs.
She was married
to Roy N. Hazelwood, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville and Pittsylvania County area. She made her home in Ringgold for a number of years and worked in textile. She was a member of Cherry Grove Baptist Church in Gibsonville, N.C.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Robert E. Strader and Johnny R. Strader, both of Danville; six sisters, Geraldine Anderson of Elon College, N.C. Marie Hodges of Ruffin, N.C., Irma Allen of Roxboro, N.C., Carolyn Gibbs of Lynchburg, Gladys Carter and Virginia Shelton, both of Danville; three brothers, Robert L. Gibbs of Brunswick, N.C., Wayne Gibbs of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Jessie Gibbs of High Point, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ernest Sartin officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:00 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Ruth Hitchings
STAFFORD, Va. - Ruth Adiline Hitchings, 87, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Born Nov. 9, 1911, in Norfolk, she was the daughter of Andrew McDearmid and Katherine McDearmid.
She was married
to Edward Hitchings, who predeceased her.
She was a retired self-employed nurse. She was a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church, Keeling, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include two sons, Ralph J. Hitchings of Keeling and David L. Hitchings of Stafford; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park, Danville, Va.
Mullins and Thompson Funeral Services, Fredericksburg, is in charge of arrangements.
Virginia Hudson
VIRGILINA, Va. - Virginia Wilson Hudson, 84, of 4079 Hudson Road, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Born May 5, 1914, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of James Robert Wilson and Dora Serena Tuck Wilson.
She was married
to Floyd Edwin Hudson, who predeceased her.
She was a retired teacher and member of North Fork Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Muriel H. Williams of Virgilina, Hollis H. Bowen of Durham, Linda H. Gale of Collinsville and Judy H. Lee of Madison Heights; five sons, Edwin David Hudson of South Boston, Hilton C. Hudson of Alton, Curtis D. Hudson, Paul C. Hudson and Allan W. Hudson, all of Virgilina; two sisters, Hilda Roller of Clover and Marie Timmerman of Rockville, Md.; and one brother, Thomas Lee Wilson of South Boston; 28 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at North Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. Russell Pedigo and the Rev. W.D. Mills Jr. officiating. Burial will be in North Fork Baptist Church cemetery.
Emma Marsh
CHATHAM, Va. - Emma Frances Dalton Marsh, 68, of Danville, formerly of Chatham, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 22, 1931, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charlie Anderson Dalton and Mary Elizabeth Yeatts Dalton.
She was a member of Chatham Christian Church and a retired seamstress with Chatham Knitting.
Survivors include one son, Tommy Marsh of Chatham; one daughter, Susan Keatts of Chatham; four sisters, Irene Myers, Reba Myers and Annie Vivian Dalton, all of Gretna, and Pearl McCracken of Lynchburg; and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased by three sisters, Gertrude Myers, Gillie Mae Dalton, and Gillie Ida Dalton; and one brother, Carroll Thomas Dalton.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. Carson Dalton officiating. Burial will be in Weatherford Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her son, 2149 Halifax Road, Chatham.
Doretha Miller
CHATHAM, Va. - Doretha Glass (Peaches) Miller, 44, of 865 North Fairview Road, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 25, 1954, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Glass, and Cleo Glass, who survives.
She was married
to Glen Miller, who survives.
She was a graduate of Danville Community College and Danville Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She was employed as a RN at Danville Regional Medical Center and was a member of Riceville Baptist Church where she served on the nursing board.
In addition to her mother of Java and her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Angela Miller Ward of Chatham and Cynthia Miller of the residence; one son Kenneth Miller of Calif.; three sisters, Mary D. Stone, Vanessa Glass and Stacia Glass, all of Java; two brothers Jimmy Glass of Java and Timmy Glass of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Riceville Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Walker officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Richard Moore
DANVILLE, Va. - Richard L. Moore, of 224 Kinzer Ave., died Tuesday, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 27, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Sylvester Moore and Essie Moore.
He was married
to Minnie Louise Grant Moore, who survives.
He was retired from Southern Processors, Inc. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army's tank corps. He was also a member of The Tabernacle, Danville React and Disabled American Veterans.
In addition to the wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Ronald Moore of Virginia Beach; one brother, Harold Moore of Danville; two sisters, Margaret Warren of Danville and Doris Loftis of Pelham, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Danville Memorial Garden Chapel with the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr. officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Bernard Poteat
DANVILLE, Va. - Bernard "Mickey" Poteat, 66, 403 Ross St., died Sunday, March 7, 1999, at his residence.
Born Dec. 12, 1932, in Danville, he was the son of Julie Poteat.
He was a retired custodian with Danville Public Schools and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Poteat and Bernard A. Poteat Jr.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Cunningham and Hughes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Serenus T. Churn officiating.
Eldin Bowyer
DANVILLE, Va. - Eldin Richard Bowyer, 75, formerly of 53 Oak Ridge Ave., died Saturday, March 6, 1999, at the Vencor Hospital in Greensboro, N.C., after several years of declining health.
He was married
to Mary Flinchum Bowyer, who predeceased him Nov. 12, 1991.
Born Nov. 21, 1923 in Fries, he was the son of Carl Richard Bowyer and Nannie Ethel Davis Bowyer. Most of his life was spent in Danville where he was employed by Dan River, Inc. as a supervisor prior to his retirement. He was also a member of the Forest Lawn Baptist Church.
He is survived by one son, David Wayne Bowyer of Dry Fork; two brothers, Jackie D. Bowyer of Bristol and Ernest Lee Bowyer of Roanoke; three sisters, Elizabeth Scearce and Carol Jean Hall, both of Danville, and Jewel Makus of Pompano Beach, Fla.; one granddaughter and one step-grandson.
He was predeceased by one sister, Dixie Williams.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from the Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Roger Austin and the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens where the American Legion Memorial Post 325 will perform military honors.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday and at other times at the residence of his son David Bowyer, 2564 Sandy Creek Road, Dry Fork.
Tom Childress
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Tom Howard Childress, 72, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
He was born in Halifax County on Nov. 10, 1926.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Childress of South Boston; his stepmother, Emily Childress of Vernon Hill; two daughters, Cherry Childress of Decator, Ga., and Shelly Childress of Baltimore; three sons, Howard Childress and Harry Childress, both of South Boston, and Tom Childress III of Seattle; five sisters, Louise Bailey of Jersey City, N.J., Marha Ferrell of Englewood, N.J., Ruby Wesson of Lawrenceville, Ruth Crite of Greensboro, N.C., and Catherine Wade of Englewood, N.J.; four brothers, Earl Childress Sr. of Franklin, Tenn., Leonard Childress and Clarence Childress, both of Jersey City, N.J., and Earnest Childress of Grave City, Penn.; and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Mount Pleasant CME Church in Vernon Hill with the Rev. R.L. Dean and Ronnie McLaughin officiating. Interment
will be in the church cemetery.
There will be a viewing one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the residence, 1610 North Main St.

Louise Dalton
DANVILLE, Va. - Louise Gregory Dalton, 73, of 236 Parkview Place, died Thursday, Mar. 11, 1999, at the Danville Regional Medical Center after declining health for the past six years.
Born Dec. 1, 1925, she was a native of Pittsylvania County. She was the daughter of Frank Burton Gregory and Nannie Scruggs Gregory.
She was married
to Douglas M. Dalton, who survives.
Most of her life was spent in Danville where she retired as a registered nurse. She was also the former executive director of the Danville Chapter of the March of Dimes. She was a member of the North Main Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Alvin C. Long of Danville; one daughter, Douglas Ann Dalton Kowitz of Danville; three sisters, Margaret Allen, Frances Allen, and Juanita Patterson, all of Danville; and one granddaughter.
She was predeceased by one brother, Thomas Gregory.
A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in the Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Robert J. Barber Jr. officiating. A private interment service will be held in Danville Memorial Gardens at a later date.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
