Dr. Walter Fitzgerald
BUFFALO JUNCTION, Va. - Dr. Walter Cleveland Fitzgerald, 80, died Friday, March 26, 1999, in Halifax Regional Hospital.
Dr. Fitzgerald was born in Crewe, Oct. 18, 1918, to the late John Hill and Meenie Davie Fitzgerald. He was a graduate of Davidson College Class of 1940 and the University of Virginia Medical School Class of 1943. In 1950, Dr. Fitzgerald started his Dermatology Medical Practice in Danville, which he operated for 40 years, retiring to Clarksville in 1989. He was an elder of the Danville First Presbyterian Church and later the Clarksville Presbyterian Church as well as a Sunday School teacher for many years at both churches. Dr. Fitzgerald was a long time visiting physician at the Dermatology Clinic at Duke Hospital. He was a member of the Medical Society of Virginia, American Medical Society, American Academy of Dermatology, Danville Kiwanis Club, and an avid jogger. Dr. Fitzgerald served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Funeral service 11 a.m. Monday at the Clarksville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Eric Myers officiating. Interment
3 p.m. in the Mountain View cemetery in Danville.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Bondurant Fitzgerald; daughter, Nancy Fitzgerald Cave of Richmond; two grandchildren, Lauren and Ryan Furgurson of Richmond; sisters, Mrs. Annie Inge and Miss Lucy Fitzgerald of Crewe; brother, Dr. John Hill Fitzgerald of Lincolnton, N.C.
The family will receive friends after the 11 a.m. service Monday.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Clarksville Presbyterian Church Piano Fund or the Danville Kiwanis Club Youth Program.
Tony Gammon
DANVILLE, Va. - Tony Emerson Gammon, 66, of 4020 Westover Drive, Lot 85, died Saturday, March 27, 1999, after a decline in health for the past year. He had been in serious condition for the past week.
He was born in Pittsylvania County on July 5, 1932, a son of George Daniel Gammon and Viola Mize Gammon. He lived on Westover Drive most of his life, and was a well-known farmer. He was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
Survivors include three sisters, Myrtle Gammon Hudson of Danville, Margaret Gammon Dalton of Keeling, and Cleo Gammon Price Coleman of Pelham, N.C.; three brothers, Curtis S. Gammon of Danville, Julian M. Gammon of Richmond, and Carson B. Gammon of the Vandola community.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Evelyn Gammon Hardy; and three brothers, James Daniel Gammon, Paul Gammon and Carlton N. Gammon.
A graveside service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Matthew Pacifico.
The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home today, 7-8:30 p.m., and at other times at the residence, Westover Trailer Court, Lot 85.
Malcolm Lewis
DANVILLE, Va. - Malcolm Owen Lewis, 76, of 304 Swain Drive, died Saturday, March 27, 1999, at Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C., after two years of declining health. He had been in the hospital for 10 days.
Born March 11, 1923, in Halifax County, he was the son of Theodore Booker Lewis and Eliza Claiborne Collie Lewis.
He was a member of a North Main Baptist Church. He lived his entire life in Danville, and he was retired as owner and operator of Malcolm Lewis Plumbing and Heating for forty years.
His first wife, Rachel Robertson Lewis, died Feb. 26, 1996. He was married
on Jan. 9, 1999, to Ann Henderson Lewis, who survives.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include one son, Owen Lee Lewis Sr. of Flintstone, Ga.; one daughter, Frances Hughes Macklin of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one sister, Lelia Lewis Hunt of Raleigh, N.C.; one niece, Susan Davis Boykin of Danville; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, George Andrew Hughes, who died Feb. 5, 1999.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, March 29, 1999, at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. A. Kyle Flora, the Rev. Eddie Davis, and the Rev. James Albert officiating. Interment
in Highland Burial Park.

Fred Moore
DANVILLE, Va. - Fred Moore, 74, of 35 Holcomb St., died Friday, March 26, 1999, at his residence. He had been in declining health for the past year.
Born April 10, 1924, in Haysi, he was the son of Willard Moore and Deltha Mullins Moore.
He was of the Baptist faith. He lived most of his life in Danville and, until his retirement, was employed as a security guard for Lorillard Tobacco Company. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was predeceased by three sons: David Giles Moore, Danny Lee Moore and Daryl Moore, and eight brothers, Jack Moore, Leroy Moore, Raymond Moore, Vernon Moore, Willie Moore, Raford Moore, Jessie Moore and Gene Moore.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Travis Journigan Moore; one son, Jerry Moore of Ringgold; two step-sons, Larry Journigan of Ruffin, N.C., and Barry Journigan of Dohlongia, Ga.; three brothers, Donnie Moore of Bristol, Roger Moore of Lakeland, Fla., and Wayne Moore of Pikeville, Ky.; one sister, Fern Large of Lakeland, Fla.; two grandchildren and six step-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, March 29, at Highland Burial Park by Rev. Bill Adams. The family will receive friends at the residence. Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Dennis Collins
CALLANDS, Va. - Dennis Wayne Collins Sr., 54, of 3317 Mapleton Drive, died Friday, March 26, 1999, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
Born Nov. 13, 1944 in Danville, he was the son of the late James Holley Collins and Vera Elaine Oakes Collins, who survives.
He attended Emmanuel Wesleyan Church, and he owned and operated C&S Garage with his son.
He was married
on Dec. 1, 1962, to Warner Emerson Collins, who survives.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of Dry Fork include three sons, Dennis W. Collins Jr., Ricky L. Collins and Barry K. Collins, all of Callands, and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roger Ewing officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Thomas Eggleston
RINGGOLD, Va. - Thomas Brice Eggleston Sr., 71, of 4312 Birch Creek Road, died Saturday, March 27, 1999, at his residence.
Born Feb. 22, 1928, in Henry County, he was the son of Brice Love Eggleston and Elizabeth Draper Eggleston.
He had lived in the South Boston area for 20 years and had resided in the Ringgold community since 1970. He was employed with Universal Leaf Tobacco Co. for 46 years and was senior vice president and general manager for Southern Processors for the 22 years prior to his retirement.
For the past five years he was an operating partner for the Bright Leaf Warehouse. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Danville.
Survivors include his second wife, Ann Eggleston Trull of Ringgold; his first wife, Norma Murphy Eggleston of South Boston; three sons, James E. Eggleston of Danville, Roger J. Eggleston of Richmond and Thomas Brice Eggleston Jr. of South Boston; one daughter, Jamie Leigh Eggleston of Ringgold; and five grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Joey Faucette officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence of Ann Eggleston Trull, 4325 Birch Creek Road, Ringgold.
Blanche Haynes
DRY FORK, Va. - Blanche Wilson Haynes, 97, of 1552 Hutson Road, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 22, 1902, in Iredell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Joseph Alexandria Wilson and Nancy Goforth Wilson.
A homemaker, she spent most of her life in Danville. She had resided with her daughter, Lorene Hutson, for the past nine years. She was married
to Edgar Levi Haynes, who predeceased her.
She was a member of the Schoolfield Baptist Church and also attended the Shermont Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sons, Leon Haynes of Callands, Grover Haynes of Danville, James Haynes of Raleigh, N.C., and Larry Haynes of Owens Cross Roads, Ala.; four daughters, Lorene Hutson of Dry Fork, Opel Crowder and Lucille Roberts, both of Danville, and Lois Gray of Rockton, Ill.; one half-brother, Carl Wilson of Mooresville, N.C; one half-sister, Myrtle Brotherton of Mooresville; 26 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Ruby Sweda, by one half-brother, Bill Wilson, and one stepsister, Katie Ingram.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. David Turbyfill, the Rev. Bill Soyars, and the Rev. Haywood Alcorn officiating. Burial will be in the Schoolfield cemetery.

Edward Long
ALTON, Va. - Edward Owen Long, 81, of 5033 Harmony Road, died Saturday, March 27, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born March 16, 1918, in Halifax County, he was the son of Joseph Henry Long and Lillie Hite Long.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a retired store owner of Long's Exxon.
He was a member of Alton Baptist Church where he was an honorary lifetime deacon. He was a member of American Legion Post 8 and DAV Chapter 3, Roanoke.
He was married
to Eunice Brandon Long, who survives.
In addition to his wife of Alton, survivors include one daughter, Norma Bull of Riner; two sons, Lowell O. Long of Alton and Rodney Brandon Long of Charlotte, N.C.; one sister, Lillian Petway of Richmond; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Corina Smith and Bessie Humphries, and three brothers, Kendall Long, Hite Long and Bill Long.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Alton Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Phillip Duckett officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
