DANVILLE, Va. - Pearlie Tom Ridgeway Powell, 91, formerly of 251 Randolph St., died Saturday, March 27, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for one year.
Born Feb. 24, 1908, in Danville, she was the daughter of Tom Ridgeway and Iva Belle Callahan Ridgeway Mangum.
She lived her entire life in the Danville area where she was a homemaker. She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church where she was a Sunday school teacher for 45 years and past president of the WCIU.
She was married
to Clarence B. Powell Sr. on May 5, 1924, who predeceased her Feb. 15, 1987.
Survivors include four daughters, Mayme O. Dill of Hampton and Becky P. Tyree, Selma Raye Lawhorne and Carolyne P. Sigmon, all of Danville; 22 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Ida Powell Graham, one son, Clarence B. Powell Jr., one brother, George Ridgeway and one sister, Elise Mangum.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Joe Beck, the Rev. Darrell Green and Bishop Saint Paul Pool officiating. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Carolyne P. Sigmon, 123 Wilson Ave.
Beatrice Roberts
DANVILLE, Va. - Beatrice Fitzgerald Roberts, 65, of New York, died Thursday, March 25, 1999, at her residence.
Born in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Henry "Fine" Fitzgerald and Sular Lovelace Fitzgerald.
She was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church in Java.
She was married
to Weldon Roberts, who survives.
In addition to her husband, survivors included two daughters, Sandra Wimberly and Patricia McGill, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Erma Herndon of Chatham, and Osie Johnson and Irene Anderson of Danville; two brothers, Omie Fitzgerald of Landover, Md., and Elmos Adams of Danville; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Shockoe Baptist Church in Java with the Rev. George Pass officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. today at Beavers Funeral Home and at other times at the home on Spring Garden Road.
Woolford Turner
JAMAICA, N.Y. - On March 22, 1999, God chose to call one of his devoted children, Woolford "Sack" Turner, to rest.
Born Sept. 1, 1944, to the late John E. and Dora A. Turner of Atlantic City, N.J., he departed this life at his residence in Jamaica, N.Y. He joined the Jethro Presbyterian Church in Atlantic City, N.J., at an early age. During his days at Atlantic City High School in 1964, he became a basketball player, a sport he thoroughly enjoyed throughout his life. After graduation and joining the military and serving for several years, he met his future wife, Matilda Ann Berger. On Nov. 8, 1969, they were united in holy matrimony until his death. After leaving the service, he joined the Adecco/Pay Wise companies. Working closely with Rose Cavgnolo, one of the many special personal and professional friends in his life, he was a branch manager, a position he held for 30 years. Other than basketball, he also enjoyed other pastimes, most notably and zestfully, fishing and gardening.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Matilda Ann Berger Turner of Jamaica, N.Y.; two sisters, Mildred Donnell and Delores King; four brothers, John, Edward, Laqua, all of Atlantic City, N.J. and James Turner, who preceded him in death. Also remaining are one uncle, Poulson E. Bolden of New Rochelle, N.Y., and one godson, Kristian Palmer Jr. of Jamaica, N.Y.
Additionally, one brother-in-law, Bennie Fuller of Danville, and two sisters-in-law, Effie Fuller of Danville, and Addie Waller of Atlantic City, N.J., regret his loss. He will also be missed a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many dedicated friends.
Arrangements have been made as follows: a viewing/wake was held in New York at Elcock Funeral Home, 130-02 Liberty Ave., Richmond Hill, from 2-9 p.m. Friday. The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jethro Presbyterian Church, 423 North Ohio Ave., Atlantic City, N.J. Pastor Nathan Byrd presided.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home will hold an entombment service today at 1 p.m. at Danville Memorial Gardens and the Rev. Jerome Morris of High Street Baptist Church will give last rites to our beloved.
Nora Wilson
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Nora Hodges Wilson, 85, of 4134 Old Cluster Springs Road, died Saturday, March 27, 1999, at Woodview Nursing Home.
Born March 10, 1914, in Campbell County, she was the daughter of Joseph Rosser Hodges and Mary Sue Glascow Hodges.
She was married
to Melvin Metts Wilson, who survives.
She was a member of the First Crossroads Baptist Church. She was an antique dealer who owned and operated Nora's Antiques.
In addition to her husband of Cluster Springs, survivors include one daughter, Mary G. Link of Alton; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. today at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev Ken Williams and the Rev. Herbert Brown officiating.
Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
Jean Davis Blair
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Jean Davis Blair, 68, died Friday, March 26, 1999, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Born Dec. 16, 1930, in Sandy Level, she was the daughter of Ruby Fed Davis and Odessa Ruth David Davis.
She was married
to Glenn R. Blair, who survives.
She was a houswife and former billing clerk for Leggett Department Store. She was a member of Fredericksburg Baptist Church and was very active in the church, performing various duties including teaching Sunday school for 20 years, church treasurer for 14 years and Girls Auxiliary leader. She also helped the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association with fund raising drives.
In addition to her husband, survivors include one daughter, Glenda B. Gotshall of Stafford, and one sister, Sheryl D. Farrar of Lynchburg.
A funeral was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 28 at Frederickburg Baptist Church with the Rev. J. Larry Haun and the Rev. Patti English officiating.
Blake Jenkins
ORANGEBURG, S.C. - Mr. Henry Blake Jenkins, 93, died Sunday afternoon in The Methodist Oaks in Orangeburg.
Born March 11, 1906, near Rembert, S.C., he was the son of the late James Mallard Jenkins and Alice Chamberlain McLeod Jenkins and the husband of the late Maud Jackson Jenkins.
After graduating from Fairfax High School where he played football, he began his lifetime career in newspaper work. He was associated with Danville, Va., newspapers for a number of years and retired from the News and Courier in Charleston, S.C. as a linotype operator. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Ramah, in Danville, for more than 60 years. He was a member of the Hibben United Methodist Church, and was very active with the ministry at The Methodist Oakes.
He is survived by the following nieces and nephews: Alice DuBose Fowler of Charlotte, N.C., Myrtle DeBose Pease of Baltimore, Md., Dr. Ladson DeBose of Backstock, S.C., Frank Dubose of Orlando, Fla., Dr. J.B. Causey of Walterboro, S.C., Alice Camille Murphy of Furman, S.C. and Kemper Mazzarelli of Marriston, Fla.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at The Methodist Oakes in Orangeburg. Rev. Kermit Shrawder, chaplain at The Methodist Oakes, will be the officiating minister. Committal services will be Thursday morning at 11 o'clock in the Mountain View cemetery in Danville.
Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton is in charge of all arrangements.
Friends may call at the chapel in Hampton between the hours of 6 and 7 p.m. today.

Audrey Millner
CHATHAM, Va. - Audrey Frazier Millner, of Franklin Place, died Sunday, March 28, 1999.
She was born in Bassett, Virginia, November 11, 1932, and was the daughter of Hobart D. and Zella Lackey Frazier.
In 1959, she was married
to H. Victor Millner Jr. who survives.
She was recently honored as Citizen of the Year for Pittsylvania County. Her professional career ended in December 1998, when she retired as Executive Director of the Pittsylvania Economic Development Organization (PEDO), an organization which was founded under her guidance and which she directed for 15 years.
Mrs. Millner had previously served as Executive Director of the Chatham Chamber of Commerce and under her direction it was merged with other local chambers into the Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce of which she served as Executive Director until it was separated from PEDO in 1989.
Mrs. Millner held a Bachelor's Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master's Degree from the University of Virginia. She founded the Adult Education Program for the Pittsylvania County Public School System.
She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Chatham.
Mrs. Millner served on the Board of Directors of Hughes Memorial Home, the Danville Museum of Fine Aets and History, and was, at her death, a member of the initial Board of the DPC Community Foundation.
In addition to her husband of the home, she is survived by her mother, Zella L. Frazier, of Chatham; a daughter, Elizabeth Frazier Millner, of Mattaponi; two sons, H. Victor Millner III, of Charlottesville, and James R. Millner II of Washington, D.C; and three grandchildren, Evan Daniel Millner, Katherine Anderson Millner and Margaret Spotswood Millner, all of Charlottesville.
A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Chatham on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Richard Soyars
DANVILLE, Va. - Richard Carlisle Soyars, 60, of 204 Brentwood Drive, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after four years of declining health.
Born Nov. 3, 1938, in Danville, he was the son of the late John Leonard Soyars and Pencie Moss Soyars, who survives.
He was married
to Jackie Cole Soyars in 1979, who also survives.
He spent most of his life in the Danville area where he was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church.
He was a retired truck driver, retiring on disability in 1996 from Highway Express, and had previously worked for Roy Stone and Virginia Carolina Trucking Company.
In addition to his mother of Danville and wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Tony Soyars of Danville; one daughter, Kelly Norton of Danville; two brothers Robert O. Soyars of Pelham, N.C., and David W. Soyars of Danville; two sisters, Faye Howard of Virginia Beach, and Linda Myers of Shelby, N.C.; and one grandchild.
He was predeceased by an infant son, Richard Carlisle Soyars Jr.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Fred Cox and the Rev. Rusty East officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
