Nannie Spangler
DANVILLE, Va. - Nannie T. Spangler, 98, of 2536 Beechwood Lane, died early Monday, March 29, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 3, 1901, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of James Henry Turpin and Sallie Beth Hyler Turpin.
She was married
to Elder David Vinton Spangler for 65 years, who predeceased her April 18, 1985.
She was a homemaker and a member of Dan River Primitive Baptist Church, Mayfield, N.C.
Survivors include one son, David M. Spangler of Danville; three daughters, Rebecca S. Smith of Sarasota, Fla., and Elinor S. Hodnett of Danville and Mildred S. Graham of Hardy; and eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Dan River Primitive Baptist Church with the Elder Kenneth Key and the Elder Julian Williams officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7:30-9 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Henry Terry, Jr.
HALIFAX, Va. - Henry Paul Terry Jr., 67, of 1079 Holly Court, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at his residence.
Born Dec. 29, 1931, in Halifax County, he was the son of Henry Paul Terry Sr. and Fannie Snead Terry.
He was married
to Ann Whitt Terry, who survives.
He was a retired maintenance mechanic for JPS Converter. He was a member of Dan River Baptist Church and the American Legion Post No. 8.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son Henry Paul Terry, III of Scottsburg; and three sisters Elizabeth T. Bates of Brookneal, Myma T. Jones of Halifax, and Agnes T. Tucker of South Boston.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Brewer officiating. Burial will be in Dan River Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today and at other times at the residence.
M. Saunders Adkins
DANVILLE, Va. - M. Saunders Adkins, 87, of 3053 Joy Circle, died Tuesday afternoon, March 30, 1999, after several years of declining health.
Born May 17, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Henry Adkins and Lena Kendrick Adkins.
He was married
to Beatrice Cook Adkins, who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II. He spent most of his life in Danville where he retired in 1971 from Dan River Inc. after 37 years of service. He attended the Westover Hills United Methodist Church.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Virgie A. Adkins and Pearl Peters.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Pam Holcomb-McLain officiating. Interment
will be held at a later date.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Annie Caskey
DANVILLE, Va. - Annie Thomas Caskey, 78, of 1760 Richmond Blvd., died early Tuesday morning, March 30, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
She was born Oct. 24, 1920, in Lancaster, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Henry Thomas and Sulie Moore Thomas
She was married
to John L. Caskey, who predeceased her March 21, 1984.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she worked for Dan River Inc. and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Mildred Foster of Florida; one brother, Dan Thomas of Lancaster, S.C.; four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Robert "Bob" Caskey.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Lancaster Memorial Park, Lancaster, S.C., with the Rev. Clyde Earles and the Rev. Link Earles officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Cynthia Henderson
VERNON HILL, Va. - Cynthia Cecelia Mealer Henderson, 82, died Monday, March 29, 1999, at The Woodview.
Born Sept. 23, 1916, in Charlotte County, she was the daughter of Addison William Mealer and Annie Green Lewis Mealer.
She was married
to Archer L. Henderson, who predeceased her.
She was a member of the Oak Level Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the choir. She was a retired beauty shop operator in the Vernon Hill area and a former member of the Wilson Memorial Ruritan Club.
Survivors include one sister Ruth Mealer Jennings of Richmond.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Edward Archer Henderson.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today, at Oak Level Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Russell Lee officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of her niece, Mary Breeden, 1142 Ridge Road, Vernon Hill.
John Lowery
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - John Willard Lowery, 83, of 1219 Bold Springs Road, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born June 21, 1915, in Halifax County, he was the son of Warren Lowery and Emma Lowery.
He was married
to Anna Belle Lowery, who predeceased him.
He was a set up worker for Daystrom Furniture.
Survivors include two sons, Willard Lowery and Douglas D. "D.D." Lowery, both of South Boston; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by three brothers, Emmon Lowery, Lewis Lowery and Jack Lowery.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Burial will be Black Walnut Baptist Church cemetery, Cluster Springs.

DANVILLE, Va. - Richard Carlisle Soyars, 60, of 204 Brentwood Drive, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after four years of declining health.
Born Nov. 3, 1938, in Danville, he was the son of the late John Leonard Soyars and Pencie Moss Soyars, who survives.
He was married
to Jackie Cole Soyars in 1979, who also survives.
He spent most of his life in the Danville area where he was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church.
He was a retired truck driver, retiring on disability in 1996 from Highway Express, and had previously worked for Roy Stone and Virginia Carolina Trucking Company.
In addition to his mother of Danville and wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Tony Soyars of Danville; one daughter, Kelly Norton of Danville; two brothers Robert O. Soyars of Pelham, N.C., and David W. Soyars of Danville; two sisters, Faye Howard of Virginia Beach, and Linda Myers of Shelby, N.C.; and one grandchild.
He was predeceased by an infant son, Richard Carlisle Soyars Jr.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Fred Cox and the Rev. Rusty East officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Pleasant Brodnax, Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Pleasant S. "Buddy" Brodnax Jr., 84, of 211 Holbrook St., died Saturday, March 27, 1999, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 23, 1914, in Danville, he was the son of Pleasant S. Brodnax Sr. and Lizzie Blackwell Brodnax.
He was married
to Mrs. Glenvary Brodnax, who survives.
He was the retired director of the Brodnax YMCA and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Mr. Pleasant S. Brodnax III of McLean; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Audrey F. Brodnax of McLean; one brother, Mr. Thomas Brodnax of Danville; and two granddaughters, Miss Olivia D. Brodnax and Miss Sophia G. Brodnax, both of McLean.
Funeral services for Mr. Brodnax will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday from Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Serenus T. Churn officiating. Interment
will follow in Oak Hill cemetery.
Mr. Brodnax may be viewed from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. today at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
