Clarence Pruitt
DANVILLE, Va. - Clarence Arthur Pruitt, 85, of 321 Beanland Road, Whitmell community, died Thursday, April 1, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 29, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of George Andrew Pruitt and Elizabeth Overby Pruitt.
He was married
to Martha Edith Comer Pruitt, who predeceased him.
He worked at Dan River Inc. as a loom fixer at the Riverside Division until his retirement. He was a member of Hollywood Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Harrison Arthur Pruitt of Whitmell and George A. Pruitt of Union Hall; two daughters, Judy A. Pruitt and Linda G. Whitmer, both of Danville; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Hollywood Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Markham officiating. Burial will be in Hollywood Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Elvin 'Popeye' Rowles
CHATHAM, Va. - Elvin "Popeye" Rowles, 70, of 305 Rowles Drive, died Thursday, April 1, 1999, at his residence.
Born August 9, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Robert Claude Rowles and Ruth Hodnett Rowles.
He was predeceased by a brother Richard Leeward "Whit" Rowles. After retiring as Green Superintendent at Cedars Country Club, he worked part-time for the Virginia Department of Transportation, Chatham Residency.
He is survived by his wife Jackie Myrick Rowles of the residence, one son and daughter-in-law, Rickie and Ann Rowles of Gretna; one daughter and son-in-law Lisa and Kenny Worley of Gretna; one brother, Claude "C.C." Rowles of Gretna; and three grandchildren, Adam Rowles, Lindsey Worley and Matthew Worley.
Funeral services will be conducted 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 1999, at Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. Bert Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 305 Rowles Drive, Chatham.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Commonwealth Nursing and Hospice, or the American Cancer Society.
Howard Taylor
LAKE MURRAY, S.C. - Howard M. Taylor, 48, formerly of Spout Springs, Va., died Thursday, April 1, 1999, at Lake Murray, S.C., at the home of his sister.
Born in Halifax County, Va., he was the son of Alice Norton Taylor, who survives.
He was a United States Navy veteran and was employed with Delta Star Inc. as a welder.
In addition to his mother of Danville, Va., survivors include four sisters, Fern A. Taylor and Felice T. Dix, both of Ridgeway, Va., Fran Agee of Bassett, Va., and Freda Curtis of Batesburg, S.C.; one brother, Jesse Taylor of Stoneville, N.C.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Overlook cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Fair Funeral Home.
Robert Thompson
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert C. Thompson, 79, of 1829 Tunstall High Road, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center after one year of declining health. He was in a nursing home since March 17.
Born Oct. 6, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William Preston Thompson and Ethel Carter Thompson.
He was married
Nov. 5, 1947, to Edith Davis Thompson, who survives.
He was of the Methodist Faith. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4637, Martinsville. He was a veteran, serving in the United States Army, Ninth Armored Division, during World War II. He was awarded three Bronze Stars and then Good Conduct medal.
He lived most of his life in Pittsylvania County. He was retired from American Furniture Factory, Martinsville where he worked as a moulder operator.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Michael K. Thompson of Axton; two daughters, Judy T. Overstreet and Kristina Thompson Evans, both of Danville; one brother, Balfour B. Thompson of Martinsville; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors conducted by American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends 6:30-7:30 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence.
Gaynell Walker
DANVILLE, Va. - Gaynell Williams Walker, 64, of 148 Jerry Drive, was called home to the Lord on April 2, 1999.
She was born September 13, 1934, in Danville, a daughter of the late Berkley Williams and Hazel Graybill Williams. She was married
to Leroy Walker, who predeceased her in 1983.
She was self-employed in the grocery business until her health failed.
She was a charter member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, where she was active in all activities of the church. She was a Sunday school teacher, President of the U.M.W. and a member of the church choir. She was the founder of the children's church ministry. She was also a Girl Scout leader.
She is survived by one son, Danny Ray Walker of Danville, three daughters, Gayle Annette Walker, Vicky Aherron and Terry W. Riggins, all of Danville; one sister, Annie Mae Williams Davis of Seattle; six grandchildren, Charles W. Clay IV, Christopher L. Clay, Laura Lea Aherron, Michael C. Aherron, Joseph McLane, Matthew Blake Walker, all of Danville; one great-grandchild, Rdaisha Clay, as well as many neices and nephews.
She was predeceased by one brother, Berkley G. Williams.
A celebration of Gaynell's life will be held on Monday, April 5, 1999, at 3 p.m. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ron Mateer officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, Sunday, April 4, 1999, from 7-8:30 p.m. and at other times the family will be at her daughter's residence, 183 Westhampton Ave.

Herbert Blackstock
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Herbert Coleman Blackstock, 82, of 1101 Noblin Ave., died Thursday, April 1, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born in Lynchburg on Nov. 25, 1916, he was the son of Edward Blackstock and Rebecca Spencer Blackstock.
He was married
to Rebecca Clardy Blackstock, who survives.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and was retired from the Norfolk-Southern Railroad.
Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Clardy Blackstock of South Boston.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.

Pleasant Brodnax Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Pleasant S. "Buddy" Brodnax Jr., 84, of 211 Holbrook St., died Saturday, March 27, 1999, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 23, 1914, in Danville, he was the son of Pleasant S. Brodnax Sr. and Lizzie Blackwell Brodnax.
He was married
to Mrs. Glenvary Brodnax, who survives.
He was the retired director of the Brodnax YMCA and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Mr. Pleasant S. Brodnax III of McLean; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Audrey F. Brodnax of McLean; one brother, Mr. Thomas Brodnax of Danville; and two granddaughters, Miss Olivia D. Brodnax and Miss Sophia G. Brodnax, both of McLean.
Funeral services for Mr. Brodnax will be conducted 3 p.m. today from Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Serenus T. Churn officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Leslie Fulcher
RUSTBURG, Va. - Leslie Yeaman Fulcher, 41, of 365 Greendale Drive, died Thursday, April 1, 1999, at her home.
Born April 18, 1957, in South Boston, she was the daughter of Harry L. Yeaman Sr., who survives, and Betty Lou Allen Yeaman. She was a registered nurse at Central Virginia Training Center.
Survivors in addition to her father of Greenbush include one daughter, Tara Burgess of Motley; three sons, Keith Burgess of Altavista, Troy Burgess and Stuart Fulcher, both of Rustburg; two brothers, Harry Yeaman Jr. of Hampton and Merritt Reagan of Rustburg; two sisters, Dottie Y. Mears of Melfa and Anita Vaughan of Greenbush.
Graveside services will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at the Bethel Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Tony Brooks officiating.
The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home, 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, and also at the home of Cathy Cook, 5198 James D. Hagood Highway, Scottsburg, 2-6 p.m. Saturday.
Juanita Hayden
DRY FORK, Va. - Juanita McCuistion Hayden, 85, of 184 W. Sunrise Drive, died Wednesday afternoon, March 31, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health and a one-week stay in the hospital.
She was born in Olney, Texas, on Sept. 7, 1913, a daughter of Horace McCuistion and Vista Reagle McCuistion.
She was married
to Charles A. Hayden, who survives. She had spent most of her life in the Whitmell community of Pittsylvania County, where she was a homemaker and a member of St. John's United Methodist Church.
Survivors in addition to her husband of the residence include one son, William B. McNeely of Burleson, Texas; two sisters, Mary Young and Jean Edwards, both of Fort Worth, Texas; three brothers, Donald McCuistion, Darwin McCuistion, and Bobby McCuistion, all of Fort Worth, Texas; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Robert Carty. The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home today 7-8 p.m., and at other times at the residence.
