Ruth Hambrick Hughes

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Ruth Hambrick Hughes, 81, of 204 Merritt St., died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Nov. 18, 1917, in Roanoke, she was the daughter of William Hambrick and Betty Hambrick.

She was married to Robert B. Hughes Jr., who survives. She was a retired sales clerk for Lantor's. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she was a pianist for the Lacy Bible Class for a number of years and was active in the Tape Ministry.

Survivors in addition to her husband of South Boston include one son, Robert B. Hughes III of Lake Wylie, S.C.; one daughter, Anne Hughes Marshall of Williamsville, Vt.; one sister, Shirley Pulliam of Eden, N.C.; two grandsons.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert M. Fox Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens, South Boston.

The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. today and at other times at the residence.

Melvin 'Red' Lewis

DANVILLE, Va. - Melvin Ramsey "Red" Lewis, 59, of 1261 Silver Creek Road, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, N.C. He had been in the hospital for four weeks.

Born March 13, 1940, in Keeling, he was the son of Clarence Dodson Lewis and Jossie Jones Lewis.

He was of the Baptist faith. He lived most of his life in Danville and worked for Faulconer Construction Company as a heavy equipment operator.

Survivors include one daughter, Anne L. Gunnell of Danville; one son, Michael Lewis of Danville; four brothers, Bernard Lewis of Dry Fork, John W. Lewis and Raymond C. Lewis, both of Danville, and Billy Ray Lewis of Spring Garden; three sisters, Dora Seamster, Elsie L. Powell and Catherine L. Haskins, all of Danville; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Faye Lewis, and one sister, Ruth Merricks.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Henry Taylor and Pastor Michael Pressley. Interment icon in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his brother, John Lewis, 264 Lewis Lane, Danville, off Kentuck Road.

William Saunders, Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - William Otis Saunders Sr., 75, of 125 Mac Road, died at his residence early Wednesday morning, March 31, 1999, after three months of declining health.

Born Jan. 20, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William Ashford "Bill" Saunders and Fannie Jones Saunders.

He was married to Nellie Weeks Saunders, who survives. He spent most of his life in the Danville area.

He was a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church and the Men's Bible class. He was also a former deacon and usher.

He was a member of the Woodmen of the World. He was a long distance truck driver with Fleming Transfer for 23 years. He retired from Pepsi Cola after 20 years of service.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Kathy Saunders Webb of Gloucester; one foster daughter, Jo Ann S. Walker of Newport News; three brothers, James Saunders of Gretna, James Rust of Chatham and Shirley Saunders of Hurt; four sisters, Kathleen Dunbar and Ruby Megginson, both of Danville, Irene Harding and Jean Taylor, both of Altavista; and two grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, William Otis "Mac" Saunders Jr.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn Baptist Church with the Rev. Homer Bowman and the Rev. Gilmer Setliff officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Wayne Warren Jr.

CHICAGO, Ill. - Rupert Wayne Warren Jr., 51, died Monday, March 29, 1999, at his residence.

Born March 27, 1948, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Rupert W. Warren Sr. of Gretna, who survives, and the late Nellie Bell Carter Warren.

He was a car salesman.

In addition to his father, survivors include one daughter, Monica Nicole Scearce of Danville; two brothers, Ernie Warren of Charlotte, N.C., and Timothy Warren; one sister, Rhonda Howell of Martinsville, Va.; his stepmother Clara Warren of Gretna, Va.; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Liberty Christian Church with Minister Wayne Grinnell officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Memorial cemetery.

The family will receive friends at his father's residence, 408 Vaden Drive, Gretna.

Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

Emma Hammack

DANVILLE, Va. - Emma Towler Hammack, 91, formerly of 147 Mitchell St., died Sunday, April 4, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after a decline in health for two months.

Born Nov. 14, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Joab Washington Towler and Nannie Wade Pickeral.

She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church. She lived her life in Danville and Pittsylvania County. She was retired from Roman Eagle Memorial Home where she worked as a nursing assistant. She also worked as a sitter for the elderly in homes and in nursing homes.

She was married to James Russell "Bill" Hammack on Dec. 9, 1933, who predeceased her Dec. 26, 1978.

Survivors include two sons, Clyde Ray Hammack of Keeling and Jesse Wilson Hammack of Danville; two daughters, Emma A. "Peggy" Welborn and Shelby H. Strange, both of Danville; two brothers, Wilson Towler of Blairs, and William Russell Towler of Crozet; one sister, Louise Giles of Mechanicsville; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. O.H. Burton officiating. Burial will be in Hollywood Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse W. Hammack, 3084 R&L Smith Drive.

Thomas Holland, Jr.

ROME, Ga. - Thomas Hunter Holland, Jr., 44, of 804 East 19th St., died Thursday, April 1, 1999, at Floyd County Medical Center.

Born Nov. 8, 1954, in Richmond, Va., he was the son of the Thomas Hunter Holland Sr. and Annetta Lovelace Holland, who survives.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne Division, and was a member of the National Guard. He was a graduate of Hargrave Military Academy, and employed by Zartic Corp. as safety officer in Rome for six years. He was of the Methodist faith.

In addition to his mother of Danville, survivors include three sisters, JoAnne Holland of Charlottesville, Va., Susan H. Scott of Rome, and Martha H. Bohannon of Halifax, Va.; and one brother, Paul H. Holland of Christiansburg, Va.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. today in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. George Neas and the Rev. Curtis English officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his mother, 145 Arnett Blvd. Apt. D11.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Thelma VanEvery Hutcheson

DANVILLE, Va. - Thelma VanEvery Hutcheson, 91, formerly of 124 Kenmore Drive, died Friday, April 2, 1999, in the Riverside Health Care Center.

Born April 6, 1907, in Fort Wayne, Ind., she was the daughter of John and Oda Peeper VanEvery.

She is the last surviving member of her generation and had lived in Indiana, Michigan, Tennessee and Florida before moving to Danville in 1978.

She was married to Bruce L. Hutcheson in April 1928, and he died Nov. 14, 1976.

She was a member of the Stokesland Baptist Church, El Said Court #28 Ladies Oriental Shrine, and a member of the Pilgram Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, Flint, Mich.

She is survived by a son, Bruce L. Hutcheson Jr. of Danville.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. today at the Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Don Frank officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her son at 738 Arlington Road. Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

After the funeral, the body will be taken to Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel, Chattanooga, Tenn., where the family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. A graveside service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Sarah Kendrick

DRY FORK, Va. - Sarah Frances Green Kendrick, 87, of 632 Tunstall School Road, died Sunday, April 4, 1999, at her residence after a decline in health for six months.

Born July 13, 1911, in the Hinesville community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Joseph Green and Mae Henrie Smith Green.

She was a member of Whitmell Christian Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, a member of the church choir and served as a superintendent of Sunday schools.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxillary of Whitmell Christian Church. She lived her entire life in Pittsylvania County and was retired from Kmart, where she worked as manager of the jewelry department.

She was married to Clarence B. Kendrick, who predeceased her July 1, 1954.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Helen Powell and Susie Kendrick, both of Dry Fork; one son, Percy C. Kendrick of Augusta Ga.; and one sister, Helen N. Kendrick, of Detroit, Mich.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by three sons, Henry S. Kendrick, Charles E. Kendrick and Clarence J. Kendrick.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Whitmell Christian Church with the Rev. Jack Oakes and Rev. Allan Holder officiating. Burial will be in Whitmell Christian Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Odessa Ward

BAYONNE, N.J. - Odessa Dodson Ward, 85, of 925 Avenue C, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at Bayonne Hospital.

Born June 5, 1913, in Rockingham County, N.C., she was the daughter of Charile Dodson and Martha Quinn Dodson.

She was married to Richard W. Ward, who died Aug. 6, 1976.

She was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church and spent most of her life in the Pelham community before moving to Bayonne to live with her daughter in July 1998. She was a mother and homemaker.

Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Amato of Bayonne; one son, James H. Durham of Hertford, N.C.; and one sister, Macie Carter of Elkin, N.C.; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Loy Kennedy officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home 7-8:30 p.m. today.
