William Carter
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - William Fields Carter, 90, died Saturday, April 3, 1999, at his home on Parkview Avenue.
He was the son of Thomas Withers Carter and Ella Booker Carter.
He was married
for 55 years to Ella Cousins "Stringy" Carter.
He practiced law in Martinsville for more than 56 years. He was the grandson of Sallie C. Booker, one of the first women ever to serve in Virginia Legislature. He also represented this area in the House of Delegates.
He received his bachelor of arts from the University of Richmond and his bachelor of laws and juris doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law and Princeton University. During World War II, he joined the FBI as an agent under Director J. Edgar Hoover. He later served in the Navy as commanding officer aboard the U.S.S. George Washington and served on the Naval Court Martial Board. He was active in the Martinsville-Henry County Bar Association, the Virginia State Bar, the Virginia Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church, Martinsville. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park in Danville.

Deidre DiSalvo
DIAMOND HEAD, Miss., - Deidre Parker DiSalvo, 32, of 84118 Bayou Drive, died Monday, April 5, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville, Va.
Born June 17, 1966, in Joplin, Missouri, she was the daughter of the late Gene Maynard Parker and Ruth Hill Parker, who survives.
She was married
to Dean Joseph DiSalvo, who survives.
She was a graduate of University of Southern Mississippi.
In addition to her mother and husband, survivors include her maternal gandmother, Ivadell Flanigan and her paternal grandmother Janie Parker, both of Danville; one son, Matthew Parker DiSalvo of the residence; one sister Michelle Lynn Parker of Biloxi.
A funeral will be conducted by Edmond-Fahey Funeral Home in Bay-St. Louis, Miss.

Emma Hammack
DANVILLE, Va. - Emma Towler Hammack, 91, formerly of 147 Mitchell St., died Sunday, April 4, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after a decline in health for two months.
Born Nov. 14, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Joab Washington Towler and Nannie Wade Pickeral.
She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church. She lived her life in Danville and Pittsylvania County. She was retired from Roman Eagle Memorial Home where she worked as a nursing assistant. She also worked as a sitter for the elderly in homes and in nursing homes.
She was married
to James Russell "Bill" Hammack on Dec. 9, 1933, who predeceased her Dec. 26, 1978.
Survivors include two sons, Clyde Ray Hammack of Keeling and Jesse Wilson Hammack of Danville; two daughters, Emma A. "Peggy" Welborn and Shelby H. Strange, both of Danville; two brothers, Wilson Towler of Blairs, and William Russell Towler of Crozet; one sister, Louise Giles of Mechanicsville; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. O.H. Burton officiating. Burial will be in Hollywood Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse W. Hammack, 3084 R&L Smith Drive.
Willie Inge
DANVILLE, Va. - Willie Green Inge, 80, of 1460 Mountain View Road, died Sunday, April 4, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 19, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Walter Inge and Nannie Williams Inge.
He was married
to Ida Smith Inge, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include six daughters, Dorothy I. Ellerbee and Ola I. Wimbush of Danville, Zonna Inge of Martinsville, Drucilla Inge of the residence, and Ruby Inge and Ruth Inge of Richmond; nine sons, Willie Inge Jr. of Martinsville, Walter Inge, Thomas Inge and Larry Inge of Danville, John Inge of Richmond, and Charlie Inge, Condrie Inge, Carl Inge and Roger Inge, all of the residence; and four sisters, Orddie I. Hairston of Cascade, Nannie Clark of Chatham and Mary Bell Smith and Estell Adams, both of Danville.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Shiloh Baptist Church on U.S. 58 West. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Sarah Kendrick
DRY FORK, Va. - Sarah Frances Green Kendrick, 87, of 632 Tunstall School Road, died Sunday, April 4, 1999, at her residence after a decline in health for six months.
Born July 13, 1911, in the Hinesville community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Joseph Green and Mae Henrie Smith Green.
She was a member of Whitmell Christian Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, a member of the church choir and served as a superintendent of Sunday schools.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxillary of Whitmell Christian Church. She lived her entire life in Pittsylvania County and was retired from Kmart, where she worked as manager of the jewelry department.
She was married
to Clarence B. Kendrick, who predeceased her July 1, 1954.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Helen Powell and Susie Kendrick, both of Dry Fork; one son, Percy C. Kendrick of Augusta Ga.; and one sister, Helen N. Kendrick, of Detroit, Mich.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by three sons, Henry S. Kendrick, Charles E. Kendrick and Clarence J. Kendrick.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Whitmell Christian Church with the Rev. Jack Oakes and Rev. Allan Holder officiating. Burial will be in Whitmell Christian Church cemetery.

Alice Leigh
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Alice Edmond Leigh, 80, of South Boston, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born in Halifax County on April 8, 1918.
Survivors include three daughters, Alice Davis of Nashua, N.H., Georgia Sims of Halifax and Emma Chappell of South Boston; five sons, Derwin Leigh of Carson City, Nev., and Belgium Leigh Jr., Joe Leigh, the Rev. Louis Leigh and the Rev. John Leigh, all of Halifax; one sister, Flossie Edmond; 28 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. today at Blue Rock Christ Temple Holiness Church in Vernon Hill with Elder Donald Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The remains will lie in state one hour prior to service.

Russell Ramsey
DANVILLE, Va. - Russell Morris Ramsey, 67, of 19461 U.S. 29 North, died Monday, April 5, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 18, 1932, in Gretna, he was the son of Hillary Morris and Myrtle Toler Morris.
He was married
to Louannie Baugh Ramsey, who survives.
He was a member of Greenbay Christian Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Kathy Ramsey of Hurt; one son, Kenneth Ramsey of Gretna; one sister, Iris Cocke of Gretna; and one brother, George P. Ramsey of Gretna.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J. D. Hunt III officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Franklin Sasser Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Franklin Miller Sasser Sr., 74, of 433 Gilbert Drive, died Sunday, April 4, 1999, after three months of declining health, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 27, 1924, in Wayne County, N.C., he was the son of Richard Sasser and Sallie Lewis Sasser.
He was married
Dec. 11, 1943, to Alma Gilbert Sasser, who survives.
He moved to the Danville area in 1980 and, prior to his retirement, he was employed with NASA for 23 years as an electrical technician at Langley Field. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of Grafton Christian Church in Grafton, and was a life member of Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Franklin Miller Sasser Jr. of Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters, Catherine S. Lane and Blanche S. Pollard, both of Mount Olive, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph Sasser and Leon Sasser.

will be in Highland Burial Park.

Dorothy Tompkins
DANVILLE, Va. - Dorothy Rebecca Tompkins, 89, died Saturday, April 3, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Nov. 12, 1909, in Danville, she was the daughter of Martin Henry Tompkins and Lucy Venable Tompkins.
She was a member of Whitmell United Methodist Church. She worked as a bookkeeper for more than 30 years at the former Gardner Motor Company in Danville. She had also been employed as a bookkeeper for R.L. Hall Motors, Peoples Bank and the former Tompkins Furniture Company.
Survivors include one sister, Lucy Huntley of Auburn, Ind.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Hontas McBrayer and Annie Kemper; and three brothers, William Tompkins, Artie Tompkins Sr. and Richard Tompkins.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Whitmell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Cannon officiating. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.
