Helen Herndon
DANVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Helen Guill Herndon, age 76, of 106 Kenmore Drive, died Wednesday evening, April 7, 1999, in the Riverside Health Care Center.
She was born in Pittsylvania County on April 4, 1923, a daughter of Nathaniel Guill and Esther White Guill.
Mrs. Herndon was a graduate of Whitmell Farm Life High School and Averett College.
She was employed with Dan River Inc. for 40 years and retired as a clerk at Hylton Hall, in 1988. Mrs. Herndon was a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church and was married
to Joel R. Herndon who died Jan. 25, 1986. She was predeceased by a brother, Edwin Guill.
She is survived by a daughter, Dianne Herndon of Danville; a grandson, Matthew L. Payne of Danville; and a brother, Paul J. Guill of Danville.
A graveside service will be held Friday afternoon, April 9, at 2 o'clock from Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Dana Hunt officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 106 Kenmore Drive.

Carrington Hodnett
CHATHAM, Va. - Carrington Hodnett, 42, of 1136 Toshes Road, died Monday, April 5, 1999, at his residence.
Born Nov. 22, 1956, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Joseph Hodnett Sr. and Ivory Prunty Hodnett, who survives.
He was married
to Deborah Hodnett, who survives.
He was a member of the Clarkstown Presbyterian Church
In addition to his parents and wife of Chatham, survivors include one daughter, Kim Harris of the residence; one son, Carrington Hodnett Jr. of Danville; five brothers, Turner Hodnett and Moses Hodnett, both of Chatham, Joseph Hodnett Jr. of Petersburg, Roger Hodnett of Pittsville and Matthew Hodnett of Rocky Mount; two sisters, Pencie McZeek and Brenda Martin, both of Chatham.
A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Elba cemetery, Gretna, with the Rev. Raymond Ramsey officiating.

Melvin Honeycutt Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Melvin Ellis Honeycutt Sr., 59, of 120 Old Piney Forest Road, Lot 57, died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at his residence after eight years of declining health.
Born April 13, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Clarence G. Honeycutt and Clarice Hall Honeycutt, who survives.
He was married
to Anne Jordan Honeycutt, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville where he worked for 19 years at Durham Hosiery Mill, and attended Riveroak Church of God.
In addition to his mother of Danville and wife of the residence, survivors include four sons, Gary Honeycutt of Newport News, Melvin Honeycutt Jr., Harold Honeycutt and Johnny Honeycutt, all of Danville; two daughters, Elizabeth Sims and Barbie Honeycutt, both of Danville; five sisters, Jackie Arron, Bonnie Scearce, and Carol Adkins, all of Danville, and Sue Brooks of Chatham and Sarah Honeycutt of Baltimore; and six grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, George Raymond Honeycutt, and one sister, Shirley Watson.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Tim Nuckles and the Rev. Neal Isom officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his son, Harold Honeycutt, 119 Moffett St.
Mary Norman Finch
JAVA, Va. - Mary Elizabeth Norman Finch age 86, of Java, Virginia, died April 7, 1999, at the Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville, Va.
Mrs. Finch was born May 16, 1912, in Henry County, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late James M. Norman and Eliza Meadows Norman.
She was the wife of the late Henry L. Finch Sr.
She is survived by one son Henry L. Finch Jr. of Herndon, Va.; one brother Warren Norman of Martinsville; two grandchildren, Susan Finch Nylund and Elizabeth Finch Parker, and one great grandchild, Lindsey Barbara Parker, all of San Diego, Calif.
She was a member of the Shockoe Baptist Church and was a past Sunday School Teacher. Mrs. Finch was active with the Thomas Carter Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She served as Chapter Regent and held several positions at the Virginia State level. She also was a member of the National Huguenot Society. Mrs. Finch was a retired elementary and civics teacher, teaching for many years at Spring Garden Elementary and High Schools.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, April 10, 1999, at 2:00 p.m. from the Shockoe Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Huff. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 9, 1999, at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence, 3061 Java Road, Java, Va.

Ethel Gray
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Ethel Bartee Gray, 91, formerly of 208 Martin Road, died Thursday, April 8, 1999, at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center in Martinsville.
Born April 26, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William E. Bartee and Lula Marshall Bartee.
She was married
to Moran H. Gray, who predeceased her May 26, 1932.
She spent most of her life in the Ferry Road community where she was a homemaker and a member of Ferry Road Friends Church.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Linwood R. Hairfield Sr. officiating.

Frankie Hardy
DANVILLE, Va. - Sarah Frances "Frankie" Hawkins Hardy, 82, formerly of Ringgold Community, died Thursday, April 8, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health, and after being in Riverside Health Care Center for 18 months.
Born July 11, 1916, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of William Edward Hawkins and Lelia Hill Hawkins.
She was married
to James Thomas "Tommy" Hardy, who predeceased her Jan. 12, 1993.
She had lived all of her life in the Ringgold community. She worked for Dan River Inc. in the sewing room for a number of years and was a homemaker. She was a member of Ringgold Baptist Church where she was a nursery worker for many years and was also a member of the Joy Club.
Survivors include one sister, Ruth Eastridge of Danville.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Ringgold Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Wrenn Yeatts North Main Chapel.
Curtis Shelton
DANVILLE, Va. - Curtis David Shelton, 78, of 29 Carlson Ave., died Tuesday, April 6, 1999, at his residence.
Born April 23, 1920, in the Sandy Level community of Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Frank Jackson Shelton and Bessie Beulah English Shelton.
He was married
Oct. 15, 1937, to Lillie Pruitt Shelton, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville where he worked for 37 years at Dan River Inc. before retiring. He was a member of Liberty Christian Church, Sandy Level.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Betty S. Travis and Gail Scearce Ragsdale, both of Danville; one brother, Clyde Shelton of Altavista; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
He was predeceased by six sisters.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J. Richard Markham officiating. Interment
will be at Liberty Christian Church cemetery at Sandy Level.
The family will receive friends at the residences of both of his daughters, Gail Ragsdale, 121 Colonial Place in Swain Acres, and Betty Travis, 126 Burwood Place.
Essie Walker
DANVILLE, Va. - Essie Saunders Walker, 84, of 302 Stuart St., died Tuesday, April 6, 1999, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home.
Born Nov. 4, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charlie Saunders and Hattie Ferrell Saunders.
She was married
to Steve Walker, who predeceased her.
She was retired from Dimon Tobacco Co. She was a member of Bennett Memorial Baptist Church, the gospel chorus and community club.
Survivors include one son, Herman Saunders of Baltimore, Md.; three brothers, Willie Saunders and Irvin Saunders, both of Baltimore, and Charlie Saunders Jr. of Danville; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Bennett Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Clarence Hairston and the Rev. Howard Graves officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
A viewing will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Willard Adkins
DANVILLE, Va. - Willard Thornton Adkins, 85, 1109 Halifax Road, died Thursday, April 8, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for the past three years and was in the hospital for a week.
Born Feb. 21, 1914 in Franklin County, he was the son of Benjamin Franklin Adkins and Lillie Mae Jones Adkins.
He spent his life in the Glenwood and Whitmell communinities and was employed with Dan River Inc. as a rollermatic's operator and retired after 37 years of service. He attended Longview Friends Church and was a member of the American Legion Post #325.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
On Sept. 24, 1954, he married
Mary Hawkins Adkins, who preceded him in death on July 8, 1998.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda A. Arnold of Danville and Willa M. Merricks of Callands; a sister, Ruby A. Mills of Whitmell; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
The funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Bob Carpenter, the Rev. Ronald Graham and the Rev. Paul Ray officiating. Interment
will be in Floral Hills Memory Garden. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 7:30-8:30 and at other times will be at the residence.
