Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Rev. Ralph Rice

CLOVER, Va. - The Rev. Ralph Edward Rice, 64, 8077 Newbill School Road, died Tuesday, Apr. 13, 1999 at his home.

Born in Botetourt County, Va., on Oct. 9, 1934, he was the son of James Walter Rice and Eva Bramelett Rice.

He graduated from Buchanan High School, and attended Ferum College, Randolph Macon College, and Duke University. He won third place in the state track meet and he enjoyed playing baseball and was offered an opportunity to play professional baseball prior to going into the ministry. He was a member of the Mount Laurel Ruritan Club. He was also a minister of the Mount Laurel United Methodist Church and a former minister of the McKendree and Asbury United Methodist Churches. He was in the ministry from 1957 until his death.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Elizabeth Chewning Rice of the home; two sons, Paul Edward Rice of Hampton and Thomas Walter Rice of Tappahannock; one sister, Thelma Rice of Roanoke; two brothers, Harry Rice of Roanoke and James Rice of Pamplin; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Mount Laurel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles B. King, the Rev. Joseph T. Carson Jr, and the Rev. Paul B. Davis Jr. officiating. Burial will take place at 4 p.m. in the Laurel Hill cemetery in Fredericksburg.

The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence.

Kenneth Welch

BLAIRS, Va. - Kenneth Lee Welch, 73, of 752 Hall Farmer Road, died Monday, April 12, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center after 11 months of declining health.

Born June 11, 1925, in Franklin, N.C., he was the son of Wilburn E. Welch and Alice Kimsey Welch.

He was married June 10, 1951, to Nell Ray Welch, who survives.

He lived in Franklin, N.C. before joining the military. He was a veteran serving in the United States Marine Corps, the United States Army in World War II and the Korean Conflict as a major.

He had been a resident of Danville and Pittsylvania County since 1956. He was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church where he had served as Sunday school teacher and deacon.

He was retired from the Pittsylvania County Service Authority where he worked as a civil engineer.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Kaye Welch Gusefski and Joan Welch Williams, both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sons, Phillip Ray Welch of Buena Vista and Ward Kimsey Welch of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five brothers, Ralph Welch, Thomas Paul Welch and William L. Welch, all of Franklin, N.C.; Louis B. Welch of Jefferson City, Tenn., and Fred Welch of Salisbury, N.C.; three sisters, Maude W. Baldwin and Muriel Welch, both of Franklin, N.C. and Joanna Welch Hedrick of Charlotte, N.C.; and eight grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Lee Ellison officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Fort Lee Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Carter

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Charles Edward Carter, 80, of 2062 Charles Lane in Halifax died Tuesday, April 13, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born on July 13, 1918, in Halifax County, he was the son of William Stevens Carter and Effie Oakes Carter.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Carter family cemetery with the Rev. Bob Watts officiating.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home.

Harry "Jim" Edwards

SUFFERN, N.Y. - Harry "Jim" Edwards, 65, of Wayne, N.J., died Friday at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Born in Danville, Va., he was the son of Daniel Coleman Edward and Beulah (nee Cook) Edwards.

He was married to Grace (nee Ambrosi) Edwards, who survives.

He lived in New York before moving to Wayne, N.J., 30 years ago. He was superintendent of the West Point Mint, Highland Falls, N.Y., where he worked for 30 years before retiring in 1997. He was a former member of the Mount Olivet Methodist Church, Danville, Va. He was a graduate of Whitmell Farm Life School with the Class of 1952.

He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member, second vice commander and historian of the American Legion Post 174, Mountain View section of Wayne, N.J., and a member of the Wayne Elks Lodge No. 2181, Wayne, N.J.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons Dan Edwards of Clifton, N.J., and Michael Edwards of Oak Ridge, N.J., two brothers, Charles Edwards of Danville, Va., Norman Edwards of Martinsville, Va; and one sister Louise Martin of Danville, Va.

He was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.

A funeral was held 9 a.m. Tuesday at Vander May Wayne Colonial Funeral Home, 567 Ratzer Road, Wayne, N.J. Burial was in Christ the King cemetery, Franklin Lakes, N.J.

Viola Gammon

DANVILLE, Va. - Viola Mize Gammon, 94, formerly of 5555 Riverside Drive, died Tuesday, April 13, 1999, after a four day stay at Danville Regional Medical Center and four months of declining health.

Born Aug. 29, 1904, in Rockingham County, N.C., she was the daughter of Jack Mize and Nannie Hanks Mize.

She was married to George Daniel Gammon, who predeceased her June 23, 1983.

She spent most of her life in the Vandola Road community of Pittsylvania County, where she was a housekeeper and a charter member of Westover Hills Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Myrtle Gammon Hudson of Danville, Cleo Gammon Coleman of Pelham, N.C., and Margaret Gammon Dalton of Keeling; three sons, Julian M. Gammon of Richmond, Curtis S. Gammon of Danville, and Benny Gammon of Vandola Road; 41 grandchildren, 76 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one daughter, Evelyn Gammon Hardy; and four sons, James D. Gammon, Paul E. Gammon, Carleton Gammon and Tony Gammon.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with Matteo Pacifico officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Evelyn Hardy, 103 Cambridge Drive.

St. Claire Glaise

RINGGOLD, Va. - St. Claire Glaise, 78, of 1500 Ringgold Depot Road, died Monday, April 12, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 7, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William Felix Glaise and Zella Emerson Glaise.

He was married to Mary Jane Walters Glaise, who survives.

He was retired from Dan River Inc.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Carolyn G. Washington and Vanessa G. Pounds, both of Ringgold; one sister Mildred G. Walters of Ringgold; two brothers, Willard Glaze and William Glaise, both of Danville.

A funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Mount Zion Baptist Church, Ringgold, with the Rev. Howard Graves Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post No. 325.

Fisher and Watkins Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Oscar Guinn

FALL RIVER, Mass. ­ The Rev. Oscar A. Guinn, Jr., 77, of Highland St., Taunton, died Monday, April 12, 1999, at Rose Hawthorne Lathrop Home after a brief illness.

Born in Danville, Va., he was the son of the late Rev. Oscar A. Guinn and Elizabeth A. Simmons Guinn.

He was married to Judith H. Heinsohn Guinn, who survives.

He lived in Taunton for the past seven years after his retirement. He was a third generation Methodist preacher. He served pastorates in Virginia, Georgia, Massachusetts, Malaysia and Singapore. Starting with Piney Forest Methodist Church, Danville, Va. in 1943, Asst. Pastor First Methodist Church, Decatur, Ga., in 1943-48; Parkman St. Methodist Church, Dorchester, Mass. 1952-56; Wesley Methodist Church; Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia 1956-58; Wesley Methodist Church in Singapore 1958-60; Wesley Methodist Church, Framingham, Mass. 1961-69, Carter Memorial Church, Needham, Mass., 1969-87; First Methodist Church, Melrose, Mass., 1982-87; Westpoint United Methodist Church, Westport Point, Mass., 1987-92.

He was a missionary in Malaysia 1956-1958; in Singapore 1958-1960. He was active in Rotary International in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia 1957-58; Singapore 1958-60; Framingham, 1961-1969; President 1964-1965, Needham, Mass, 1969-1982; Melrose 1982-date begin a Senior Active. He was made a Paul Harris Fellow by the Melrose Club in 1987. He was a member of Raham Lodge No. 70, in Danville, Va., later a member and honorary member of lodges in Decatur, Ga., Pythagoras No. 41, Foochow, Fukien, China, Theodore Roosevelt in Quincy, Mass; in Ipoh, Perak Malaysia Angus No. 1529, Napier No. 3418, Kinta No. 3213, in Singapore Zetland in the East No. 508, and at various times Nehoiden and Norfolk both of Needham, Fidelity, Melrose, Masters, Newtonville, Converse, Malden, Noquochoke, Westport, Metacomet Daylight, Taunton, Charles H. Titus, Taunton, King David Taunton, Delta Braintree. He was member of the Decatur Chapter No. 119, Royal Arch Chapter where he received many degrees and was member of other chapters St. Andrew's Boston, Kinta Chapter No. 3212 Ipoh, Malaysia, Concord, Framingham, Mount Vernon Needham, Adoniram, New Bedford, St. Mark's Taunton, Fall River Somerset.

He belonged to Royal and Select Masters in DeKalb Council, Decatur, Ga., and in Boston Council. He was a member at times in Needham Council, Cryptic, Newtonville, New Bedford Taunton Grand Commendery in Natick Commandery No. 33, Natick, Mass. where he held various degrees.

He held four bodies in the Scottish Rite all in Valley of Boston.

Masonic honors were bestowed onto him were Joseph Warren Medal, Sept. 10, 1975, Grand Chaplin, Dec. 27, 1976. Grand Representative of Grand Lodge of Prince Edward Island, Henry Prince Medal, 50 year veteran, March 13, 1996, Royal Arch Grand Chaplin, Grand Representative of Grand Chapter of Wisconsin, Benjamin Hurd Medal, Paul Revere Medal, Knighted in Bay State Conclave of Red Cross of Constantine, Royal Order of Scotland, Demolay Legion of Honor, Rainbow Grand Cross of color, Dad Advisor of Taunton Rainbow.

In September 1976, he had the highest honor a Mason can have bestowed upon him. He was Coronated the 33rd Degree in Milwaukee, Wis. He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Kaufman Brydon Chapter No. 87 Danville, Va., and had been a member at one time with Milton No. 107, Milton, Mass. Orient No. 31, Framingham, Wistaria No. 138 Needham, Melrose No. 14, Melrose, Rose Croix No. 79, Taunton. He was a member of the Aleppo Shrine Boston and Amaranth Nashoba Valley Court No. 13 Concord, Mass.

He was educated in the public schools of Danville, two years at Emory and Henry College, Emory, Va. Ba. Bd. Th.M degrees from Emory University, Altanta. He also did some work at Boston Univeristy.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons O. Allen Guinn III of Lee's Summit, Mo., David G. Guinn of Kenmore, Wash., James W. Guinn of Lilburn, Ga.; one daughter Elizabeth S. Guinn of Eugene, Ore.; one brother Robert N. Guinn of Cascade, Va.; 26 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Beech Grove cemetery, Westport, Mass.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wesley United Methodist Church, Framingham, Mass.

Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road, Westport, Mass, is in charge of arrangements.

Hazel Mercer

RINGGOLD, Va. - Hazel Reed Mercer, 93, died Monday, April 12, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center.

Born June 29, 1905, in Grayson County, she was the daughter of the Rev. William A. Reed and Allie Richardson Reed.

She was married to Howard Lindsey Mercer, who predeceased in 1975.

She made her home in the Ringgold community for 50 years. She worked for 20 years as a designer for Dan River Inc. She was a member of the First Church of the Brethren on Glen Oak Drive where she was a Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir.

Survivors include one sister, Selma R. Prather of Ringgold; two brothers, John M. Reed of Ringgold and Clayton B. Reed of Danville.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Berkley officiating.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Mill Creek Church of the Brethren cemetery, at Green Creek, N.C., with the Rev. Joe Rinehart officiating.

Timothy Overby

DANVILLE, Va. - Timothy Wayne Overby, infant, born dead Tuesday, April 13, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

He was the son of Charles Richard Overby and Donna Lynn Brewer Godwin, who survive.

In addition to his parents of Danville, survivors include paternal grandmother, Jean Adkins of Danville; his maternal grandparents, David Brewer and Lois Brewer of Danville; paternal grandfather Richard Overby of Danville; maternal great grandparents Robert Baxter and Lois Baxter of Lawton, Okla. and Hassel Brewer of Danville, Marilyn Rappelyea of Long Branch, N.J., and his paternal great grandmother, Hazel Crews of Danville.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jeffery Hopkins officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 114 Fairfield Avenue.

Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
